The Khama Rhino Sanctuary Botswana
One of my most special visits ever. The Khama Rhino Sanctuary (KRS) in Botswana is a community based wildlife project, established in 1992 to assist in saving the vanishing rhinoceros and restore an area formerly teeming with wildlife to its previous natural state.
They are open to the public for day visits and overnight stays in chalets or camping.

Suzuki Jimny - Khama Rhino Sanctuary | Adventure to Botswana - Part 1
In April 2021 we took our Gen 3 Suzuki Jimny on an epic adventure across Botswana. With our route plan done by Ultimate Routes we spent 30 days exploring the most beautiful and wild places we have ever experienced.
In Part 1, we travel from Cape Town to Khama Rhino Sanctuary, stopping at Stablewood Lodge in Kimberly, Marico Guest Lodge in Groot Marico, and Mokolodi Nature Reserve in Gabarone.

Modular design custom back board, fridge box + slider and double sided removable pigeonhole by John Leyden - DM for details.
Interior & overlanding gear upgrades to Jimnothy were done by African Sky Adventure Company - This includes our battery system, fridge, extra lights, awning, strengthened and serviced our Front Runner Roof Rack, refitted our roof top tent to accommodate two jerrycans and had previously fitted the Front Runner under roof rack table kit, the drop down tailgate prep table, and the African Sky interior roof storage net.
Mechanical upgrades to Jimnothy were done in 2020 Zombie Offroad - This includes 50 mm Des Sol 4x4 Adventure Hardware lift kit, supplied with Gabriel HDP Shocks, the Zombie Offroad steering damper, as well as the extended brake lines, EBC Brake pads, and 32 mm wheel spacers.
We also upgraded our tyres to the 215/75 R15 General Grabber AT3 at BestDrive specifically for Botswana

Kgalagadi Nossob 4x4 Eco Trail
Overland in the Kalahari - Nossob 4x4 Eco Trail.
Kgalagadi National Park - South Africa & Botswana.
Braam & Pieter were fortunate to find space on this fantastic Eco Trail in the Kalahari for the last week in April 2017.
What was more of a surprise is that the 3 other vehicles pulled out, which only left our 2 vehicles and the game ranger. (A maximum of 6 vehicles – incl. game ranger - may complete the route)
The Kalahari was fantastic green and lush after good rain in February and March 2017
You have to be completely self-sufficient, incl. accommodation, food, water, and shower water. It is a full fledged 4 day, 4x4 route with a difficulty of 2 (out of 5) Most of the days we did not even get to use 3rd gear high range. Low range is required when the sand become tricky in hot summer months.
Due to all the rain the grass was very high and we used grass seed nets to curtail the grass seed intake into the radiators. We did have to clean the undercarriage and engine protection plates daily!
We also had the fortune of hearing lion and jackal almost every night.
We also encountered snakes every day!
The Kalahari is a fantastic place to visit and come closer to God and it's wonderful creation - Nature!
Our guide / Game Ranger was Ivan Bok. He is VERY well educated on the fauna and flora of the Kalahari. He astonished us daily with his stories and knowledge of the wild, plants, and the Koi San people.
We did stay one last night at Polentswa on the Botswana side of the park (Kgalagadi being a Transfrontier park with South Africa and Botswana)

Kubu Island, Botswana Advance Omega X Alps
A paragliding camping safari to Kubu Island - Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Botswana
Sera's Rescued Rhino, Loijipu, at 3 and a half years old.
‘Loijipu’ (meaning ‘2nd one born’ in Maa language) was the 2nd rhino calf to be born in the Sera Rhino Sanctuary, Northern Kenya, following the successful translocation of 10 endangered black rhino in 2015. Born in February 2017, he was abandoned a few hours from birth after his mother Nairrenyu got spooked (she is naturally quite skittish!). Rescued and transported shortly after, he was reared lovingly by the keepers of nearby Reteti Elephant Sanctuary. At 18 months, the prodigal son returned to Sera Conservancy. Many of Saruni Rhino guests have been lucky enough to visit Loijipu in his enclosure (which expands as quickly as he does!) and they cherish the time spent observing him as he re-adjusts to the wild. Here he is at nearly 3 and a half yrs old. He needs some more time to start displaying ‘wild’ behaviour to ensure he can fend for himself and his territory if challenged. A true conservation & protection success story thanks to Northern Rangelands Trust, Reteti Elephant Sanctuary Community United for Elephants, and Kenya Wildlife Service.
