Air Austral est une compagnie aérienne française dont le siège social est situé à l'aéroport Roland Garros de Sainte-Marie, à la Réunion, en France. La base principale des opérations aériennes de la compagnie aérienne est l'aéroport Roland Garros. Elle exploite des services réguliers depuis la Réunion vers la France métropolitaine, l’Afrique du Sud, la Thaïlande, l’Inde et diverses destinations de l’océan Indien. La société compte 900 employés. Air Austral a été créé en décembre 1974 par l’homme d’affaires local Gérard Ethève. Il s'agissait de la première compagnie aérienne commerciale de la Réunion, appelée Réunion Air Services (RAS). En août 1977, RAS avait commencé les services régionaux de Sainte-Marie à Mayotte [6] avec un turbopropulseur Hawker Siddeley HS 748 de 32 places. RAS est devenue Air Réunion en décembre 1986.
En octobre 1990, Sematra, une société détenue à 46% par les municipalités de la Réunion et dont les actions restantes appartenaient à des banques et à d'autres partenaires privés, ont acheté Air Réunion. Un mois plus tard, Air Réunion devenait Air Austral. Deux mois plus tard, Air Austral a acheté son premier Boeing 737-500. 737-300 autres ont été acquis en 1994 et, en 1997, la compagnie aérienne a acheté un 737-300QC, qui permettait le trafic passagers et fret uniquement.
En 2000, la compagnie aérienne a réceptionné un ATR 72-500, un turbopropulseur à courte distance. À ce moment-là, Air Austral desservait les aéroports de Roland Garros à Sainte-Marie et de Pierrefonds à Saint-Pierre avec des vols réguliers vers Mayotte, Johannesburg, l'Afrique du Sud, les Comores, Maurice, les Seychelles et trois destinations à Madagascar (Antananarivo, Tamatave, Nosy). Be, Majunga). En 2003, Air Austral a lancé son premier service long-courrier entre La Réunion et Paris, avec deux Boeing 777-200ER. Les deux Boeing 777 ont été rejoints par un troisième Boeing 777-200ER en 2005. Une deuxième liaison long-courrier reliant la Réunion à Marseille et Lyon a été mise en place.
En 2007, un troisième service long-courrier à destination de Toulouse via Marseille a été mis en place. En 2008, la compagnie aérienne a introduit de nouveaux uniformes pour le personnel et les membres d'équipage, conçus par Balenciaga. Le deuxième ATR 72-500 a été ajouté à la flotte, suivi d'un troisième quelques mois plus tard. En avril 2009, Air Austral a ouvert un nouveau service vers Sydney et la Nouvelle-Calédonie, ouvrant ainsi une nouvelle liaison entre Paris et Sydney via La Réunion. La compagnie aérienne a également acquis deux Boeing 777-300ER. En novembre, il a passé une commande ferme pour deux Airbus A380 de la classe économique à 840 places, à livrer en 2014. Ils sont destinés aux vols Air Austral Réunion-Paris. En juin 2010, il a été annoncé qu'Air Austral commencerait des vols réguliers entre La Réunion, Bordeaux et Nantes à partir de février 2011.
En août 2011, Air Austral a reçu son premier Boeing 777-200LR. En avril 2012, le fondateur et directeur général Gérard Ethève a été remplacé par Marie-Joseph Malé à la suite de difficultés financières causées par des décisions commerciales risquées, aggravées par les prix élevés du carburant. Les lignes non rentables à destination de Nouméa, Sydney, Marseille, Bordeaux, Nantes, Toulouse et Lyon ont été fermées. La société a depuis retrouvé ses bénéfices. Également en avril 2012, Air Austral n'a pas été en mesure de payer un nouveau 777-200LR en attente de livraison. La société cherche à vendre dans l'avion au lieu de prendre livraison. Suite à ce développement, Air Austral a annoncé en mai 2012 qu'elle différerait ou annulerait sa commande de 2 Airbus A380, une décision devant être prise d'ici la fin du mois de juin 2012.
