MELAKA, MALAYSIA - Malaysian Food Tour!

Melaka (also sometimes spelled Malacca) is a beautiful city in southern Malaysia, significant in history, packed with delicious food, and again, like most of Malaysia, a melting pot of cultures, peoples and foods.

Here’s what we ate in this food tour of Melaka, Malaysia:

Kedai Kopi Chung Wah - One of the foods you have to eat in Melaka is Hainanese chicken rice balls. The rice is cooked with chicken broth like most chicken rice, but instead of just a plate of rice, you get little fish ball shaped rice balls, along with chicken. It’s an iconic dish, but it’s pretty delicious and makes a wonderful breakfast.
Total price - 29 MYR ($7.12)

Asam Pedas Pak Man - Asam pedas is sour spicy, and you’ll find variations of it across much of Southeast Asia, but Melaka is quite famous for it within Malaysia. We went to Asam Pedas Pak Man, a stall set up within a local Malaysian food court. I ordered a variety of different plates, each asam pedas but with a different fish. All were spectacular. It looks extremely spicy, but it’s not actually all that spicy, however it is extremely tasty and full of herbs and chilies and flavor. Best Malaysian food dish of the day in Melaka for me.
Total price - 75 MYR ($18.39)

Klebang Original Coconut Shake - This was pretty ordinary for me, nothing spectacular, but again it’s one of those things most people try in Melaka.
Total price - 9.90 MYR ($2.43)

Ban Lee Siang Satay Celup - Next up, satay celup, a unique Melaka style satay where you choose your own skewers and boil them in the sauce right in the middle of your table. For me honestly, satay celup is too sweet, but I have to admit it’s a lot of fun to eat and cook, and very social.
Total price - 34 MYR ($8.34)

Ikan Bakar Haji Masu - Finally to end this Malaysian food tour in Melaka (Malacca), we went to a seafood, ikan bakar (grilled fish) restaurant. There are quite a few huge seafood restaurants in Melaka, but I wanted one that was kind of small and laid back. Ikan Bakar Haji Masu was fantastic, and I think the best thing was their grilled fish.
Total price - 99 MYR ($24.27)

Thank you for watching this Malaysian food tour in Melaka. It’s an amazing city to visit when you are in Malaysia.

???? WATCH Street Food Tour in Melaka, Malaysia:

First stop of our Malaysian street food tour in Melaka, Malaysia, was to try murtabak, a very popular Malay Indian food here in Malaysia. It was a spicy, tasty way to start our day. We then headed a little out from the main part of town to a local shop to try nasi lemak. Nasi lemak is pretty much the national dish of Malaysia, and one of the most popular Malay foods. This is a Malaysian street food you don’t want to miss.

In between trying the best Malay street food in Malacca, we explored the city. Along the river is the best place to try cendol, and not just any cendol, but durian cendol! We continued on our sweet kick to cool off with a coconut shake, a popular Malacca street food. Before our last stop of the day, we tried rendang from a recommended place. This is one of the foods to eat in Malaysia, a very well-known Malay food, but this was our first time trying it! The flavours were very rich and complex, we loved it.

The last stop on our Malaysian street food tour in Melaka, Malaysia, trying the best Malay street food was for satay celup, satay hot pot. Now satay hot pot is a specialty here in Malacca, it is unique to the city, and unlike anything we’ve tried before. All your skewers are cooked in a huge boiling pot of spicy satay peanut sauce, unreal! Satay hot pot has to be the best type of hot pot and our new favourite kind of hot pot, a must try malay street food in Melaka.

We hope you enjoy our Malaysian street food tour in Melaka, Malaysia trying some of the best Malay street food in Malacca. The satay hot pot was the perfect end to a great day of eating.

There are so many delicious foods to eat in Melaka, and today we started with the famous Hainan chicken and rice balls, a Melaka specialty from a local shop outside the main city centre. These balls were like a flavour explosion, full of so much taste! Such a popular street food in Malacca.

On our street food tour in Melaka, Malaysia, we visited some incredible sights, as well as ate some delicious foods. We sampled putu piring and the local Nyonya kuih, two very different and unique foods we had never tried before, but truly some of the best street food in Malacca. Kuih is a very traditional Malaysian and Malacca food, and kuih comes in many different varieties, including the very popular lapis kuih.

One of the highlights of the day was stopping by the tandoori chicken master to watch the cooking of the best tandoori chicken. We met Badar, a true tandoori chicken master, and watched as he showed us his techniques for cooking the juiciest and most succulent tandoori chicken.

We ended our Malaysian street food tour of the best street food in Malacca by heading to the Jonker Street Night Market, a must visit when in Malacca. This market is full of shopping, and of course, lots of tasty eats. Shopping & Eating Malaysian Street Food along Jonker Street Night Market in Melaka, Malaysia

This travel video is a tour of us walking, shopping, eating Malaysian street food, people watching and taking in Malaysian cultural performances and music at the Jonker Street (Jalan Jin Hang Jebat) Night Market located in Melaka (Malacca), Malaysia.

This lovely strip in the heart of Malacca's Chinatown turns into a bustling hive of activity - at night on the weekend - with people crowding every inch of space along the street.

The UNESCO heritage park is one of my favorite night markets in all of Asia - only Shilin market in Taipei, Taiwan comes out ahead.

Malaysian performers entertain pedestrians on both ends of the strip while vendors line up one by one offering souvenirs, Malaysian/Chinese street food and refreshments.

Jonker street night market is one of the top places to sample authentic street food where you can get everything from refreshingly sweet drinks to spicy stir fries.

We both stopped to eat carrot cake stir fry along with Cendol (a refreshing Malaysian dessert).

The carrot cake stir fry tasted a lot like Pad Thai; however, we didn't notice any actual carrots. What it appeared to consist of was in fact turnips.

The Cendol was my personal favorite for the evening. Given how hot and humid it is - at all times of day - this refreshing treat filled with jellies, beans, shaved ice and sweet coconut milk more than hit the spot.

As we continued to wander from one end to the other we couldn't help but notice all of the street performances and music.

We stopped many times for refreshments to stay hydrated and to escape temporarily from the madness of the main pedestrian strip.

For those interested in all of the hustle and bustle, the weekend night market in Malacca is open on Friday, Saturday and Sunday night from 6 pm until midnight.

It's one of the top attractions in Melaka (certainly one of the liveliest) and it should be added to your things to do list while based in Melacca.

What is your favorite night market? Would you enjoy going to this one?

We are in Malacca right now and it is nighttime so we are about to head over to Jonker Street where they have one of the biggest night markets I have ever seen. It is a great place to find food and go shopping, so let's head over there.

What are you eating right now? There is nothing better to do at the night market, the Jonker street night market, than to indulge in street food. We've got a refreshing little dish right down here - take a look at it. There are different kinds of jellies and beans and shaved ice with some sweet coconut milk and cane syrup. Is it ever good! It is the perfect way to beat the heat.

Right here we've ordered something called a carrot cake. I am not seeing any carrots so far but it looks really tasty. It smells good. Is it good? How would you describe it? I would say it is like a Pad Thai without the noodles. You have the bean sprouts, you have a little bit of tofu and some egg and peanuts. I don't know where the carrot name comes from.

I just bought some sugarcane juice - it is really sweet and refreshing and I love that they gave us lots of ice. It is perfect. It is perfect for a hot night like this.

Malaysian Street Food Tour in Kuala Lumpur

Glad you love Malaysian street food too! Get my free street food guide here:

Malaysian street food is amazingly delicious and Kuala Lumpur is full of food everywhere you look!

The first dish in the video is known as Nasi Campur, a truly delightful Malaysian street food that consists of a giant plate of rice accompanied by an assortment of various side dishes. I chose fish curry, chili tofu and a bunch of other delicious vegetables and garnished.

Next I stopped at a famous place near Little India in Kuala Lumpur to eat an Ikan Bakar grilled fish. It was grilled in some kind of chili sauce and served with a limey chili sauce that was absolutely spectacular.

When it began to rain, I decided to drink a cup of milk tea teh tarik, one of the most famous beverages in Malaysia.

The next meal was at Hameed's a restaurant specializing in Indian style Malaysian street food known as Nasi Kandar. Along with a plate of rice covered in curries, I aslo ordered a plate of biryani, and a side of tandoori chicken and plan naan.

I couldn't leave Kuala Lumpur without eating the absolute mos comforting Malaysian street food: Nasi Lemak. After searching around, I finally found it at an outdoors restaurant. It wasn't the best nasi lemak I've ever had, but it sure wasn't bad!

Hope you enjoyed this Malaysian street food tour in Kuala Lumpur!

When in Melaka there are a number of things you have to tick off your MELAKA EATS list. Today we embark on a food hunting adventure and visit a few spots not far from Melaka town to find some Melaka famous food. Get ready for a huge Malaysia street food tour!

Restoran Ming Huat
This kopitiam houses a number of stalls and is a local favourite. One of our subscribers recommends it to us and suggests it’s a living embodiment of the concept of muhibbah, where people of different cultures, races and religions live and work side by side harmoniously, respectful of each other’s backgrounds. There is a Malay nasi lemak stall, an Indian Muslim stall and a Chinese stall in this kopitiam and it’s customers are from all different backgrounds. It really is the perfect example of muhibbah. We eat nasi lemak with a side of chicken rendang and sample mee kahwin a mash up of mamak rohak and mee rebus.

Aunty Koh Cendol
Aunty Koh’s cendol is some of the most famous in Melaka. Her stall is only open on Saturday and Sundays from 11:30am onwards. We arrive at 11:30am and by 12:00pm Aunty Koh has sold out!! What makes her cendol so special? The coconut milk. Aunty Koh grates and presses around 30 coconuts from around 1:00am the night before she opens. Fresh is an understatement!

Klebang Original Coconut Shake
Another must eat/drink in Melaka is the Klebang coconut shake. This iced concoction is made up of ice, coconut milk, coconut water and coconut flesh and is topped with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream. Delicious!

Kuih Keria Antarabangsa
Our final stop is Kuih Keria Antarabangsa. These sweet potato doughnuts are a crowd favourite and when they open at 1:00pm we guarantee there’ll already be a line of about 20 deep! Cooked sweet potato is mashed up with flour, deep fried and then covered in a gula melaka syrup. Mouth watering!
