Zhangjiajie National Forest Park: 4 Days of Adventure in Avatar Mountains of Hunan China

Follow my 4 days adventure to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park where the highlight of this Zhangjiajie travel guide focuses on national park, Avatar mountains, Zhangjiajie Hunan's food, Xibu night market, the infamous Zhangjiajie bridge, the spectacular view of the heaven view from a cable car and the Tujia Minority. The main attraction which is the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is where lies the heavenly view of the natural scenery. Located in Hunan, Zhangjiajie Park's beauty even attracted legendary film maker, James Cameroon to select the Zhangjiajie Mountain as the backdrop of the Hallelujah Mountain in the mystical planet of Pandora in the movie, AVATAR. My 4 days of Zhangjiajie itinerary and travel guide as below:

★Day 1
The first day of my Zhangjiajie trip brought me to the Yellow Dragon Cave aka Huanglong Cave. Yellow Dragon Cave, known as the wonder of the world's caves, is one of the largest caverns in China. It is a karst cave, full of stalagmites, stalactites, underground streams, and large caverns. Exploring the cave, I need to navigate up and down the stairs as well as taking boats to reach the others part of the cavern.

During the night I explore the ordinary street of Zhangjiajie.

★Day 2
Second day starts by a tour to Hallelujah Mountains (previously knowns as Southern Sky Column). Hallelujah Mountain is located in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Wulingyuan Area of Hunan Province. The beauty of these natural wonder inspires the floating mountain in the world of Pandora of James Cameroon's Avatar. Hallelujah Mountains is accessible by cable car. Avatar Mountains China 2018

At the night, I explored the tourist must visit pedestrian walk, Xibu Street. Here, there are plenty street performance, cultural shows, street foods, restaurant, local delicacy, exotic food and many hand made souvenir.

★Day 3
After 2 days of wonderful scenery shock, it's time for me to relax. My first stop on the third day is the Jinbian Stream aka Golden Whip Stream. This is where you can relax with pristine water, verdant mountains and cool weather.

Second stop of the days is the 10 miles natural gallery. To explore, you either either choose to walk or take the train. As the name implies, 10 Miles Gallery feature a wonderful view of natural mountain that resembles human, animal, god and beast. At the end of the 10 miles natural gallery is the Monkey Garden. Had some fun with the monkey over there!

Third stop of the day is the highlight my Zhangjiajie trip, the longest and highest glass bridge in China at the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon. Experience the thrilling feeling of height of Zhangjiajie National ForestPark glass bridge by standing on transparent glass bridge. It might be scary at first but it become normal later on. From the Zhangjiajie glass bridge, I go down to the bottom of the canyon through the cliff plank road. Halfway through, I am given choice of taking elevator or keep going through the cliff plank road. I chose the plank. And my perseverance was rewarded when I met with a local Tujia minority couple and have a short conversation with them. Pushing downward, I was welcomed by a calm turquoise lake. At the end of the route, I leave Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon by boat.

★Day 4
The fourth and final day, I visited the TianMen Mountain. Tianmen mountain is famous for its spectacular view from the cable cars, 999 steps Heaven's Gate and glass plank road or glass walkway. To be honest, the view from the tops of TianMen is the closest resembles of Heaven on the Earth. Last day of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park trip ends and we travel to Changsha for a flight home.

ZHANGJIAJIE - China's Most SURREAL Mountains (Avatar, Tianmen, Glass Canyon) | Travel Vlog 4k

Zhangjiajie city, home to Tianmen mountain, National forest park, and Glass bridge across the Grand Canyon. Zhangjiajie is the prime place to see China's most beautiful, majestic and surreal mountain landscape. From Tianmen mountain's cloudy peak and glass catwalk bridge, to the National forest park's mystical Avatar peaks where James Cameron's movie was filmed, and to the Grand Canyon where you can walk across the largest Glass bridge over a steep canyon.

This time, I am traveling with my mom. We spend 4 days exploring Zhangjiajie's natural wonders. Lots of hiking, lots of gasps of awe, and lots of beautiful scenery.

Glass skywalk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Tianmen Mountain, China

China from a Vantage Point: Glass Skywalk in the Tianmen Mountain.
The glass skywalk in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in the Tianmen Mountain, China, seems especially built for the fearless. But walking on this incredible pathway, suspended 1,430 meters high up in the air (about 4 691.6 feet) is also 6,35 centimeters thick (2.5 inches), making it safe for the avalanche of tourists. The skywalk is situated 4,700ft above sea level on the side of the Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, China.

The 200ft long bridge joins the west cliff at the Yunmeng Fairy Summit, the summit of Tianmen Mountain and Zhang Jiajie.

And it would appear to be too scary for the cleaners - tourists are asked to put on shoe covers before passing to help keep the path clean.
The pathway, built earlier in the summer echoes the glass-bottomed walkway at the Grand Canyon in the U.S.

The 70ft bridge is 4,000ft above the natural wonder and allows tourists to look through 2.5in of crystal-clear glass to the Canyon floor below.

The Tianmen mountain, literally translated as Heavenly Gate Mountain is so called because of a huge natural cave that occurs halfway up to the summit.

My Biggest Mistake in China? | Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park in China's Hunan Province is known to be one of the most stunningly beautiful places in the world - a UNESCO World Heritage Site that inspired the movie Avatar with its more than 3,000 sandstone pillars and peaks, some higher than 200 meters/660 feet. Unfortunately, my adventures in the Avatar Mountains with its glass bridge and grand canyon and Tianzi Mountain didn't go as planned...Around the 3:50 mark, I talk about how my friends and I have been rethinking our framing around regret and 'bad' decision making. I'd love to hear your thoughts on that or anything else in the video!

The AVATAR Mountains in Zhangjiajie & TIANMEN

On the last day of my 4 day trip to Zhangjiajie I went to Huangshizhai. The most popular part of the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the part where the Avatar movie was shot. The views were, again, amazing!

Later during the day I went to Tianmen, the heavenly gate. I mainly filmed the cable car ride, which was very impressive!

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Tianmen Mountain - China

I went to Dayong twice because the first time it rained a lot. I had a better weather when I visited Zhangjiajie National Forest Park but not the next day to Tianmen Mountain. The stairway to heaven was difficult to see due to fogs. So I decided to go back for the Tianmen Mountain! It was better, I was able to see the big hole in the mountain. I also visited the famous Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge on my second visit but not included in the video. My knees did not wobble as it did when I was at the Glass Bridge Skywalk of the Grand Canyon.

TIANMEN MOUNTAINS, ZHANGJIAJIE, CHINA

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT #tianmenmountains in #china PLEASE HAVE A LOOK DOWN BELOW :)
Follow me on Instagram:

How did we get to #zhangjiajie?

We were in #hongkong, so we have to go to #shenzhen first; and from there we took the K9006 train to Zhangjiajie. This was a 21-hour sleeper train. We booked the tickets through a website. If you need more information about this, please let me know on the comments and I can make a video about it.

Where did we stay?

We stayed at the Zhangjiajie Yijiaqin Hotel. I recommend this place, the owner was very helpful, he picked us up at the Railway Station and walked along with us to the hotel, he even helped us to carry the big suitcases to the third floor. His English is good and answered all our questions. In case you need to do some laundry, this was done in 2 hours for 40 CNY.

Where did we buy the tickets?

We purchased the tickets directly at the Cable Car Station, a 15 min walk from our hotel. In Google you can search as “Tianmenshan Cableway”.

There are 3 types of tickets:

Line A: take the cable car up to the mountain and the mini bus down.
Line B: take the mini bus up to the mountain and the cable car down.
Line C: take the mini bus go to up and down the mountain.

After showing our passports, we paid 261 CNY/person in cash (I am not sure if they accept cards). Please keep in mind that this price doesn’t include the glass floor 1:25 (5 CNY/person) nor the Forest Sightseeing Cable Car to the Peak 3:04 (25 CNY/person for one-way ticket). Remember to bring extra cash with you.

We got Line A tickets at 8:00 am and there was no queue at all, it was very straight forward: pay for the tickets, walk to line A and directly into the cable car. We were there on a Thursday, maybe we were lucky? I don’t know. I would avoid weekends if possible.

What did we do at the top of themountain?

There are two routes, the West and the East Line. We took the West Line first, walked along the Cliffside Path and the Western Glass Bottom Path (5 CNY/person). Since it was early in the morning there were very few people around, so we had the chance to take lots of pictures!.

We continued walking along the Guigu Cliffside Path Northern and Southern Sections until we reach the Suspension Bridge, Bai He, Son-craving Cave and the Cherry Bay Restaurant. At this point you can take the Forest Sightseeing Cable Car (25 CNY/person for one-way ticket).

Here we started walking on the Cliffside Path of the East Line, we skipped the Eastern Glass Bottom because there was a huge queue and I think we had to pay another 5 CNY/person. After this, we got a little bit lost, but we managed to get to the Yu Hu Peak. There were quite few stairs involved, if you have problems in your knees maybe you can skip this. Finally we walked to the Turbulent Water to get the escalators down to Tianmen Cave. Be careful here, only go down the escalators if you are done with the top of the mountain; once you go down you won’t be allow to go up again.

After several long escalators, maybe 5 or 6 in total, we got to the Tianmen Cave. We started walking down, stopping every so often to take pictures and give some rest to the knees. After this, we took the minibus down to the Cable Car Station, the drivers were not going slow, but I suppose they are used to it and know every bend on the road. We were back at 2:00pm.

Tips:
• Bring your passport, otherwise you won’t be able to buy the tickets.
• Have plenty of cash with you, there is a Bank of China ATM close to the Mac Donald’s in front of the Railway Station. I think this is the only one around.
• We were at the mountain mid-June and it was not cold, maybe I didn’t feel the temperature because I was walking up and down stairs. I was happy I didn’t bring a sweater with me.
• I recommend taking line A tickets, it’s the fastest and easiest way to reach the top of the mountain. The paths and the glass floors will be pretty much empty, and you will not be queuing or fighting for pictures.
• The price of the bottle of water is 5 CNY, if you want you can bring your own and save a little bit of money. We also got sausages for 5 CNY/each. I don’t know what they were made of but they were nice.
• Bring your own toilet paper!
