Voodoo Festival in Benin | My First Fete du Vodoun

Voodoo Festival in Benin

Benin, Africa ????????

Here's a compilation of videos and pictures I took from the first Voodoo Festival I attended in January 2017. This festival takes place every year on January 10th.

Zu was not able to go because he had already flown back to the US for work. This festival is so amazing, so many people and great vibes!

✨ Vodun/Vodoun (english = Voodoo) originated in Dahomey which is now present day Benin. Vodun/Vodoun is not just a religion; it's deeply embedded in the Beninese way of life...even if done inadvertently. ✨

❗️ Please like and comment below! Share with friends and family who are thinking about attending Benin's Voodoo Festival (Fete du Vodoun)!

Surprising Magic Of The Voodoo Kingdom in Ouidah, Benin

2022 ended with lots of memories gathered up from various events, one of which includes my travel to Quidah, in Benue Republic

I had desires to overcome several fears that had engulfed my mind for some time as the main goal for 2023 is to do things I would love to do regardless of anxiety.

With a group of friends, I woke up and headed out and boom I was at the Python Temple????.

In the past years, it could never have been me touching or being in the same space with a crawling creature as I disliked it so much because I usually have weird feelings about them.

But here I was wearing one out of the numerous Pythons over my neck

The python temple Ouidah is one of the many sacred places in Benin republic and a voodoo shrine in the country. It's a tourist attraction site where you would love to visit while your in the country.

The pythons are wild animals but the reverss is the case in benin republic, they guard and protect this creatures.

Legend has it that the king of Ouidah while running from his enemies during an inter tribal war, was saved by the pythons in the forest and prevented his enemies from capturing him. After the war he erected three huts in honour of the pythons and up till date the temple features between 40 and 70 snakes lying around without restraint while people worship them
If eventually you kill any of the pythons there are legal and spiritual consequences.

It's will cost you 1000cfa per person to enter this shrine as a tourist and if you want to take pictures and videos will cost you an extra 2000cfa

At the entrance there is a tree where you can drop a gift and make a wish, as long it's not something bad, as said it will come to pass and when it comes to pass it expected you revisit and show appreciation.

After the tree is a shrine where only people who have been initiated can go inside and make prayer or incatation.
There are drawing on the walls which illustrates so much about Quidah and the pyton temple.

When it was time to see the Python I was a little afraid, but it's a safe proc ess as this snakes are harmless. We went further into the temple where there more than 30 snakes in it and we saw another tourist making some prayers, I guess he was making a wish.

We where ask to make a wish aswell but I wasn't in for it, I just wanted to see some snakes, as I have never touched one before.
I was shocked when I was informed that one of the member of the python temple built the cathedral in front of he shrine. It's hardly off anywhere in the word that these two religion can actually co exist peacefully in the same location.

Voodoo Gods LEGBA and AGUE

Hi everybody ... all OK,
This one is a special about the voodoo Gods Legba and Ague

LEGBA is the youngest son of LISA (sun) and MAWU (moon).
Legba is the unpredictable ... BUT!!! he can act as a gate between the Gods and the people!
There are different Legba's according to their power to communicate between the people
and the gods, ancesters etc ...
The royal Legba (1st to see!), the TO-Legba of a city and the domestic Legba.
There exist a 4th kind, a legba to take with while travelling, this one I did'nt see.

AGUE is the God of the Forests!

Enjoy,
J.
