BBC Four - Indian Hill Railways (Episode 3/3) - The Kalka Shimla Railways (IRFCA)

Please Also Watch: TEJAS EXPRESS coaches with AMRITSAR SHATABDI EXPRESS / 2nd Trial Run
--~--
From the Himalayas in the north to the Nilgiris in the south - for a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds and into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways.

Shimla was once the summer capital of the Raj. They built churches, schools, a town hall and the railway and left behind their symbols of empire and an ethos of duty, loyalty and ambition - but they also left a divided subcontinent.

Characters featured include Maqsood, a refugee and a porter from Kashmir, and John Whitmarsh-Knight, a teacher looking for a home. Sanjay the station master is hoping for promotion and his boss Bataljit is waiting for a transfer, but everybody is waiting for the snow.

BBC Four - Indian Hill Railways (Episode 1/3) - The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway ( IRFCA )

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a line so close to the people that it flows like a river through their lives. The relationship between the train and the people is changing, however, as a new generation of Gurkhas populates these hills, demanding an independent state and fighting for a new identity as they journey into the modern Indian world.

BBC Four - Indian Hill Railways (Episode 2/3) - The Nilgiri Mountain Railway (IRFCA)

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a romantic line, popular with honeymooners and driven by love and devotion as well as steam. It chugs through the south Indian jungle up to a hill station, once known as Snooty Ooty.

The current guard is Ivan. Married for twenty years, he is concerned about his friend Jenni, the ticket inspector, because he's still a bachelor - but Jenni has a secret.

In the engine shed, Shivani, the railway's first female diesel engineer, is working on a steam loco. She has to make it look its best, as in the year of filming, 1999, the railway celebrated its centenary. The high point is the Black Beauty competition to pick the best engine on the line, but rains and landslides threaten the proceedings and the tourist business. Will love win out in the end?

EP 1 Shri Mata VaishnoDevi Yatra with complete details | Jammu Tour

Earlier we used to travel to katra from jammu, now we have a direct train from Delhi to Katra. If you are short of time, you can start your yatra on the same day, do a night halt a Bhawan and come back next day.

Explore our merchandise:

We wanted to go slow and make each leg of the yatra memorable for which we decided to do night halt at Katra, So day 1 we were in Katra,

Day 2 - we started from katra to Adhkuwari and did night halt there.
Day 3 - we started from Adhuwari and went to Bhawan thenBhairav ji yatra, there after reached back to Katra and did night stay at katra.

Following are the details about the journey with our learnings and things to keep in mind when doing Shri Mata VaishoDevi yatra.

We Started from Delhi to Katra in Vande Bharat Train, we stayed in Clark’s in Hotel, which was quite good hotel. Though hotel’s tariff is around 3500 per day but during feb it was off season, we got discounted tariff for rs 2750 per day.

Address - Clarks Inn Suites, Domel Katra Rd, near Asia Chowk, Jammu, Katra, Jammu and Kashmir 182301

Google Map Location -

10 feb 2020 - we started our Yatra from Katra to Shri Mata Vaishno Devi

Connectivity to katra details...

Railway - Nearest Railway station - SVDK “Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra”
If there is no connecting train to katra - your next option is….

Jammu Tawi - Very well connected to other cities of India.

Distance - Jammu Tawi to Katra - 50 Km.
Bus Service : Overnight Bus service options available from delhi. (Delhi to Jammu ( 580 km).
Airport - Nearest Airport Jammu - Direct flight to jammu is operating from Delhi.

Hotels in Katra

You will find several Budget and Premium Catgory Hotels in Katra

One needs to take Yatri Parchi before starting the Yatra, that can be taken while you are in Katra, from “Katra Bus Stand - Yatra Registration Counter” or Online -

Timings of Yatra Registration Counter - 0500am to 1000 pm - Free of cost

Every single person needs to obtain the Yatri parchi.

Distance from Katra to Adhkuwari - approx 5.5 km via old route and approx 7 km via new route Tarakote marg.

Adhkuwari to Bhawan - approx 5.5 km via the battery car route and approx 6 km via Sanj chatt.

For Battery van:
This journey is between Adhkuwari and Bhawan
There are 2 things:
A. They promote it for people who cannot walk or are old.
B. It is better that you have pre booking - they give priority for people who do online booking...

My recommendation/suggestions if you are planning to travel to Vaishodevi.

Book your stay accomodation in advance in katra as well as mid way either in Adhkuwari or Bhawan.

Get your yatra parchi online to avoid que.
If you are planning to travel by helicopter you need to book in advance, it will take you to sanjichatt and from there you will have to walk down to Bhawan - distance of 2.5 km. cost rs 1045 per passenger. Camera is not allowed in helicopter.

Best time to travel : Jan and february as during this time, less people travel, you will enjoy more. If you travel between 15th jan and 20th february, there is a high chance that you may get to visit old Gufa at Bhawan, Plus keep in mind that you should avoid weekends. Because if there are more yatri’s on any day , they close the old Gufa.

You can also look at clubbing vaishno devi yatra with shiv khori and patnitop, you can see other videos for additional information.

Should you have any query related to this yatra, please feel free to ask that in comment below, I will look forward to hearing back from you in this regard.

Parvati Valley Himachal Pradesh Tour | Ambala to Himachal by car | via Nalagarh, Mandi Market,Kullu

Himachal Pradesh Tour Part-2 |Ambala to Himachal by car | via Nalagarh, Mandi Market, Kullu Himachal

AMBALA:
Ambala is a city and a municipal corporation in Ambala district in the state of Haryana, India, located on the border with the Indian state of Punjab and in proximity to both states capital Chandigarh. Politically, Ambala has two sub-areas: Ambala Cantonment (also known as Ambala Cantt) and Ambala City, eight kilometres apart, therefore it is also known as Twin City. It has a large Indian Army and Indian Air Force presence within its cantonment area. It is located 200 km (124 mi) to the north of New Delhi, India's capital, and has been identified as a counter-magnet city for the National Capital Region to develop as an alternative center of growth to Delhi.
Ambala separates the Ganges river network from the Indus river network and is surrounded by two rivers – Ghaggar and Tangri – to the north and to the south. Due to its geographical location, the Ambala district plays an important role in local tourism, being located 47 km (29 mi) south of Chandigarh, 50 km (31 mi) north of Kurukshetra, 148 km (92 mi) southwest of Shimla, 198 km (123 mi) north of New Delhi and 260 km (160 mi) southeast of Amritsar.

Chandigarh :
Chandigarh is a city, district and union territory in India that serves as the joint capital of the two neighbouring states of Punjab and Haryana. Chandigarh is bordered by the state of Punjab to the north, the west and the south, and by the state of Haryana to the east. It is considered to be a part of the Chandigarh Capital Region or Greater Chandigarh, which includes Chandigarh, and the city of Panchkula (in Haryana) and cities of Kharar, New Chandigarh, Mohali and Zirakpur (in Punjab). It is located 260 km (162 miles) north of New Delhi and 229 km (143 miles) southeast of Amritsar.
Chandigarh was one of the early planned cities in post-independence India and is internationally known for its architecture and urban design. The master plan of the city was prepared by Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier, which transformed from earlier plans created by the Polish architect Maciej Nowicki and the American planner Albert Mayer. Most of the government buildings and housing in the city were designed by the Chandigarh Capital Project Team headed by Le Corbusier, Jane Drew and Maxwell Fry. In 2015, an article published by BBC named Chandigarh as one of the few master-planned cities in the world to have succeeded in terms of combining monumental architecture, cultural growth, and modernisation.

INDIA TRAVEL Series 05 Kalpa, Kalpa-Nako, Himalayas, Spiti Valley, Nako

INDIA TRAVEL Series 05 Kalpa, Kalpa-Nako, Himalayas, Spiti Valley, Nako

TV Sofokl

The Himalayas are spread across five countries: Bhutan, India, Nepal, People's Republic of China, and Pakistan, with the first three countries having sovereignty over most of the range.[2] The Himalayan range is bordered on the northwest by the Karakoram and Hindu Kush ranges, on the north by the Tibetan Plateau, and on the south by the Indo-Gangetic Plain. Some of the world's major rivers, the Indus, the Ganges, and the Tsangpo-Brahmaputra, rise in the Himalayas, and their combined drainage basin is home to some 600 million people. The Himalayas have profoundly shaped the cultures of South Asia; many Himalayan peaks are sacred in Hinduism and Buddhism.

Lifted by the subduction of the Indian tectonic plate under the Eurasian Plate, the Himalayan range runs, west-northwest to east-southeast, in an arc 2,400 kilometres (1,500 mi) long. Its western anchor, Nanga Parbat, lies just south of the northernmost bend of Indus river, its eastern anchor, Namcha Barwa, just west of the great bend of the Tsangpo river. The range varies in width from 400 kilometres (250 mi) in the west to 150 kilometres (93 mi) in the east.

The name of the range derives from the Sanskrit Himā-laya (हिमालय, Abode of Snow), from himá (हिम, cold, winter, frost) and ā-laya (आलय, receptacle, dwelling).[3] They are now known as the Himalaya Mountains, usually shortened to the Himalayas. Formerly, they were described in the singular as the Himalaya. This was also previously transcribed Himmaleh, as in Emily Dickenson's poetry[4] and Henry David Thoreau's essays.[5]

From the same name, they are known as the Himālaya in Nepali and Himālay in Hindi (both written हिमालय), the Himalaya (ཧི་མ་ལ་ཡ) in Tibetan, the Hamaleh Mountain Range (سلسلہ کوہ ہمالیہ) in Urdu, and the Ximalaya Mountain Range (t 喜馬拉雅山脈, s 喜马拉雅山脉, p Xǐmǎlāyǎ Shānmài) in Chinese.

In Hinduism, the Himalayas have been personified as the god Himavat, father of Ganga and Parvati.[28]

Several places in the Himalayas are of religious significance in Buddhism, Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. A notable example of a religious site is Paro Taktsang, where Padmasambhava is said to have founded Buddhism in Bhutan.[29] Padmasambhava is also worshipped as the patron saint of Sikkim.

A number of Vajrayana Buddhist sites are situated in the Himalayas, in Tibet, Bhutan and in the Indian regions of Ladakh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Spiti and Darjeeling. There were over 6,000 monasteries in Tibet, including the residence of the Dalai Lama.[30] Bhutan, Sikkim and Ladakh are also dotted with numerous monasteries. The Tibetan Muslims have their own mosques in Lhasa and Shigatse.[31]

There are many cultural aspects of the Himalayas. For the Hindus, the Himalayas are personified as Himavath, the father of the goddess Parvati (Gupta and Sharma, 4).[33] The Himalayas is also considered to be the father of the river Ganges. The Mountain Kailash is a sacred peak to the Hindus and is where the Lord Shiva is believed to live (Admin, sec. Centre of Religion).[36] Two of the most sacred places of pilgrimage for the Hindus is the temple complex in Pashupatinath and Muktinath, also known as Saligrama because of the presence of the sacred black rocks called saligrams (Zurick, Julsun, Basanta, and Birendra, 153).[32]

The Buddhists also lay a great deal of importance on the mountains of the Himalayas. Paro Taktsang is the holy place where Buddhism started in Bhutan (Admin, sec. Centre of Religion).[36] The Muktinath is also a place of pilgrimage for the Tibetan Buddhists. They believe that the trees in the poplar grove came from the walking sticks of eighty-four ancient Indian Buddhist magicians or mahasiddhas. They consider the saligrams to be representatives of the Tibetan serpent deity known as Gawo Jagpa (Zurick, Julsun, Basanta, and Birendra, 153).[37]

The Himalayan people’s diversity shows in many different ways. It shows through their architecture, their languages and dialects, their beliefs and rituals, as well as their clothing (Zurick, Julsun, Basanta, and Birendra, 78).[37] The shapes and materials of the people’s homes reflect their practical needs and the beliefs. Another example of the diversity amongst the Himalayan peoples is that handwoven textiles display unique colors and patterns that coincide with their ethnic backgrounds. Finally, some people place a great importance on jewelry. The Rai and Limbu women wear big gold earrings and nose rings to show their wealth through their jewelry (Zurick, Julsun, Basanta, and Birendra, 79).
