Pyramiden is a ghost town whilst Barentsburg is an active coal mining town.

Located on the edge of the Arctic Ocean, Greenland is almost totally covered by a vast glacier; the ice sheet. Fascinated by this place, Serge Aviotte organizes his 14th expedition, on which scientific research meets sporting exploit.
Serge Aviotte is trying to beat his own world record for descent into an ice cave (-173 meters). But unfortunately, the weather conditions are not within usual parameters. Accompanied by a team of arctic explorers and scientists, this expedition makes for a breathtaking human adventure.

HOW EXPENSIVE IS SVALBARD? | Cost of groceries and food in Longyearbyen Coop
For this week's vlog, we thought it would be helpful to take you around the biggest supermarket in Longyearbyen, Svalbard. Surprisingly, I found that Svalbard cost of living (at least the supermarket food prices) are not that expensive.
From produce prices, Svalbard alcohol and beer, to the bread and whale meat, Co-op Svalbard has it all. And even better, they have a locker to store your polar bear rifle if you need it!

Meet Wei Si, a spunky 26-year-old currently living in the Arctic Longyearbyen in Svalbard, Norway — the northernmost town in the world! Away from family and friends, she shares with us why she moved from tropical Singapore, and what it's like living in a town with more polar bears than people.

LONGYEARBYEN SVALBARD | Highlights of the Northernmost Town in the World
Have you ever seen the sun in Svalbard? It is unlike anything I've ever seen before - it was hovering just above the hills, moving sideways, before it finally set above those same hills.
There are several things to do in Svalbard. Exploration in Longyearbyen, Svalbard is very interesting.
Start at the Svalbard Church, which is open 24 hours. It is a welcoming and warm place to worship and to congregate. There's a stuffed polar bear inside - one of a few stuffed Svalbard polar bears in many places around Longyearbyen.
Another highlight of Svalbard is the Svalbard Museum. Here, you can learn more about the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, as well more about the history and nature of Svalbard. I learn a few things about whaling in Svalbard (a cruel practice, in my opinion).
The Svalbard Seed Vault is not open to the public; however, they are planning on opening a visitor's center in a few years. It is not officially announced yet!
I managed to check out the famous Svalbard Polar Bear sign, which designates the limit on where you are supposed to be safe from polar bear attacks. Beyond this point, you will have to carry a polar bear rifle for protection!

Svalbard, Norway 2017 - On thin ice adventure
The Arctic glaciers are melting faster than any other glaciers in the world. It is best to see it now before they are gone forever. One of the activities you can do in Svalbard is to go on an open jet-boat and get suited up in this cool arctic survival suit.....then go off north to see the glaciers.

???????? Svalbard REINDEER + FREE Bicycles = Longyearbyen World's NORTHERNMOST Town (NORWAY on a Budget)
The warmth of a Longyearbyen summer, during 24-hour daylight, brings out a herd of Svalbard reindeer to graze and prance through the village. This is what life is like in the world's northernmost town.
Even in Norway's High Arctic, surprisingly, there are bargains to be discovered and affordability for the budget traveler. The Svalbard tourist information center distributes free bicycle rentals and although the ride itself isn't special, it sure beats beating the pavement on foot.
When cycling in Svalbard in Norway Land of the Midnight Sun, Matt views a sunset over the town and other unique features in this remote northern village.
Magnificent Svalbard reindeer are observed in town as is the helicopter during an Arctic Search and Rescue. The village's school, greenhouse and an abandoned mine are also on display during this ride when, even on flat roads, a free bicycle presents its physical challenges.
And during some down periods, the role of the Svalbard Governor and his responsibilities are discussed in this tranquil town.

SVALBARD FOOD | Kroa Restaurant, Reindeer Burgers, Northernmost Brewery & Chocolate
There's lots of great Svalbard food in these amazing restaurants in Longyearbyen! We love doing DIY food tours, and this time, we are exploring Svalbard.
First stop is Mary Ann's Polarrigg Hotel and Restaurant. It was recommended by Visit Svalbard as a place where you can get authentic Svalbard cuisine. You can find exotic Arctic dishes here, such as whale or seal steak, and reindeer dishes. Not to mention, the Mary Ann hotel has very eclectic decorations throughout the place.
Next is the Kroa Restaurant, located in Longyearbyen town center. It is a popular spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a cozy dining area, friendly staff, as well as an amazing selection of 'everyday' food. Get the tasty burger, or pizza - one of the best selling dish of Kroa. Thank you to Kroa and Visit Svalbard for having me in this relaxing (and tasty) experience!
I also visited the Northernmost Brewery in the world, Svalbard Bryggery, as well as Fruene Cafe - the northernmost chocolate factory in the world! Sjokolade fra Fruene cafe is definitely a must visit for your coffee break.
For dinner, I decided to visit another great restaurant, the Coal Miners' Cabin restaurant. It is located in Nybyen, not too far from the Gjestehuset 102 guesthouse where I stayed. It is more of a hangout place for budget hostelers, as several guesthouses and budget hostels are located in the area.
One of the must eats here in the Coal Miners' Cabin restaurant is the Svalbard specialty - Reindeer Burger. I found it very gamey and it had a very strong smell - it took a while to get used to the taste and the smell.

W maju 2014 roku wybraliśmy się z Magdaleną w podróż na daleką północ, do norweskiego Svalbardu, na wyspę Spitsbergen. Film z bramy do Bieguna Północnego jest dziełem naszego kolegi - Jakuba Jedlińskiego.

Svalbard was on my travel bucket list the moment I saw a National Geographic post about it on Instagram. Let me tell you, 40 hours is nowhere near enough time to spend on such a magnificent island (but the hotel costs are steep and my budget was definitely not prepared for this trip up north. I don't regret any of it, though). I instantly fell in love with the town on Longyearbyen and I hope one day to study in one of UNIS of Svalbard's Master's programs. For those who are curious and reading this description, Gjelder hele Svalbard means applies to all of Svalbard because yes, polar bears do inhabit this arctic desert and have been spotted pretty close to the village this year. Svalbard, it was real, and I will be back.
