Who are Mad or Nomad?

Since we met, over a decade ago, we knew we wanted to travel round-the-world. We’ve tried travelling for months at a time before; backpacking, riding, driving and hiking but it’s never been enough.

Now we want to travel the world forever.

Having ridden for 10 years each - and with Andy working as a professional motorcycle journalist for the last five – travelling on motorbikes was a no-brainer.

But we’ll also be hiking, backpacking, sailing and probably crawling round the world too!

So, on 1st January 2018 we said bye to the jobs, house, friends and family, sold everything we owned, threw one too many bags over a motorbike and here we are.

We want to explore, have an adventure, meet new people and discover another way of living.

Are we Mad or Nomads? We don’t know. But we’re doing it anyway.

So thanks for sticking with us,

Andy and Alissa

Beautiful Culture of Wakhan Afghanistan

The Wakhi people are an ethnic group who primarily live in the Wakhan Corridor, a mountainous region in northeastern Afghanistan, northwestern Pakistan, and southeastern Tajikistan. The Wakhi culture is rich and fascinating, with a unique set of customs and traditions that have been preserved for generations.

One of the most notable aspects of Wakhi culture is their love for music and dance. The Wakhi people have a rich tradition of music, with many different instruments such as the rubab, the daf, and the surnai being used in their music. The Wakhi dance is also a vibrant and colorful expression of their culture, with a variety of traditional dances being performed on special occasions and celebrations.

Another aspect of Wakhi culture that is particularly noteworthy is their emphasis on hospitality. The Wakhi people are known for their warm and welcoming nature, and visitors to their homes are always treated with great respect and kindness. This hospitality extends to their food as well, with traditional Wakhi dishes such as shapik and laghman being prepared with great care and shared with guests.

Cycle Touring the Pamirs: Khorog to Osh via the Wakhan Corridor

Join me on my epic journey from Khorog to Osh via the Wakhan Corridor.
We will follow the border of Tajikistan and Afghanistan for another 250+kms and you'll get to hear my opinion about the safety in the area.
We will camp on top of the highest pass in the Pamirs: The Ak-Baital Pass at 4,655m/15,272' high!
Then we will take in one of the most beautiful areas of the Pamirs in my opinion: The Kara-Kul Lake area.
After that, we will meet a few other cyclists on our way into Kyrgyzstan and eventually I will reunite with an old cyclist friend in Osh!
Hope you enjoy!

Wakhan Corridor Where You Can View Tajikistan Afghanistan from Pakistan| Broghil Pass Broghil Valley

Wakhan Corridor, Where You Can View Tajikistan Afghanistan from Pakistan | Broghil Pass
Broghil, also spelled Broghol (el. 3798 m./12,460 ft), is a high mountain pass along the Durand Line border that crosses the Hindu Kush mountain range and connects Wakhan District of Badakhshan Province, Afghanistan with Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan.

Broghil is a relatively low pass. It was closed for about three months each winter because of snow, but for much of the rest of the year it was passable even for cart traffic.

It is one of the four major mountain passes entering Chitral District; the others are the Dorah Pass from Badakshan Province of Afghanistan, Shandur Top from Gilgit, and Lowari Top from Upper Dir District.

The area of Broghil is inhabited by Wakhi and Kyrgyz people.

European migration
According to the National Geographic Genographic Project, Broghol Pass appears to be the route used by the ancestors of all modern Western Europeans to reach Europe. Modern Europeans carrying the M45 genetic marker crossed Broghol and then turned west; M45 further mutated to become M173 and then M343, which is carried by 70% of the population of England.[1]

In popular culture
The 1985 comedy movie Spies Like Us depicts Dan Aykroyd crossing the Broghol Pass on a mountain yak.

About Wakhan Corridor:
The Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region of Tajikistan is located in the north, and the northern parts of Pakistan are located in the south, separated by the Wakhan Corridor, which is a narrow strip of land in the Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan that stretches to Xinjiang in China. The Panj and Pamir rivers emerge from this high alpine basin, joining to form the larger Amu River. Since ancient times, travelers to and from East, South, and Central Asia have used the valley as a commercial route.
The corridor was established as a result of the Durand Line, which was established in 1893 by an agreement between Mortimer Durand of the British Raj and Emir Abdur Rahman Khan of Afghanistan.Between the Russian Empire and the British Empire (which included the disputed territory of Gilgit-Baltistan and the regions of Russian Turkestan, now in Tajikistan, British India, now in Pakistan), this little strip served as a buffer zone. The Qing dynasty then claimed the eastern end of it, which bordered China's Xinjiang region.
The corridor is located in the Badakhshan Province of Afghanistan's Wakhan District. It has 17,167 residents as of 2020.The Wakhi and Pamiri people inhabit the northern region of the Wakhan, which is also known as the Pamir. The Fayzabad Airport in the western city of Fayzabad, which is accessible through a road network, is the nearest significant airport for usage by the locals.
