BAKO NATIONAL PARK DAY TRIP (Everything you Need to Know!)

I was in Kuching June 17-22nd 2022 for the Sarawak Rainforest World Music Festival and decided to visit Bako National Park.
Most people seem to go for 2 days 1 night but we only had time for a day trip and there didn't seem to be much info on doing that online.
And some local friends also mentioned in passing about the high tide at Bako and how we could potentially get stuck there....and while I'm quite a nature nerd, I wasn't so familiar with Sarawak terrain.....Along with the fact that I had just finished a huge work project and wasn't in my usual alert state of mind, I was really hesitant to go to Bako for a day trip.
None of the info I found online actually reassured me, hence why I created this video!
Because Bako is SUPER EASY to do and is really amazing! Absolutely gorgeous.
So do pay this place a visit =)

Borneo: You need to go here! | Orangutans, Turtle Island, Bako, Mulu, Kinabatangan

This is the untold story of when I was in Borneo on the Malaysian side on South East Asia Trip in 2018. This video tells the story of Borneo.

After a few days in the capital of Kuala Lumpur, seeing the Petronas Tower, heading to the Batu caves and experiencing tropical rainforest mixed with city we flew to the island of Borneo.

This is somewhere I never thought I would visit, let alone be able to backpack there. I had no idea what to expect and in Kuching, in the Sarawak region, it was crazy to think that so much nature was waiting to be explored. It was fairly easy to get about, heading to the Semenggoh Nature Reserve. Here we saw Orangutan in a protected area of the rainforest.

The other side of Kuching, on the coast was the Bako National Park, accessible only by small boat. We tried this before but the waves were too strong, the second day we headed out, the waves still very strong but the driver powered through. So much so that it almost tripped us backwards into the sea!

Arriving to the Bako entrance we hit up various trails with a Singapore couple and saw some amazing views from the cliffs of the sea, rock formations and beaches. There were loads of animals too, from Proboscis Monkey to Warthog!

A flight on a small propeller plane took us to a place only accessible by plane, the Mulu National Park. We stayed in a communal lodge inside the park entrance and spent a few days exploring the area. There are some of the worlds longest and deepest caves here, home to millions of bats. Caves such as Clearwater Cave, Cave of the Winds, Deer Cave and Lang Cave. We got to these by boat and also saw a local village market. There were self guided hikes to see the variety of flora and fauna too, but not always sign posted so we tried our best not to get lost in the rainforest. The aforementioned bats gave a spectacular exodus from the caves in the evening as they headed out for food. There was also a night trek around the park to see more amazing animals, tiny Frogs making huge noise, Praying Mantis, Scorpions and more. We even found cool critters in the shower area, but fortunately the dangerous ones did not disturb us!

We continued into Sabah, to the region capital of Kota Kinabalu. Here we stayed in a capsule hotel, a popular South East Asia pod style accommodation.

There was an organised tour by Borneo Dreams that we could not pass up. We headed towards Sandakan and out to an island that is jointly owned by Malaysia and the Philippines, called Turtle Islands. The island we were on was called Selingan and under strict conservation rules, limiting numbers of visitors. In the evening we were only allowed in the communal lodge and awaiting for any reporting of turtle landings from the rangers. We were lucky that it didn't take long and we were able to witness a Hawksbill Turtle lay eggs and learn how these are collected, hatched and released to allow a greater change of improving the animals population. It was such an amazing experience and the conservation did not end there.

After returning to Borneo mainland we saw more Orangutan at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, as well as Bornean Sunbears at the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre just next door. We also went to the Gomantong Caves to see how locals collect bird nests on massive ladder and rope systems, and stayed in a lodge on the Kinabatangan River.

We also saw the huge Rafflesia plant and went on a canopy ropewalk. Back in Kota Kinabalu we chilled on an island called Sepanggar to relax after many amazing nature discoveries.

I would highly recommend a visit to see and take part and give to the conservation of the parks and animals, flora and fauna on this incredible island.

There was no 'Travel Bubble' at the time, and my journey was documented on my I-Phone 8+ and a Go-Pro Hero 5. I knew from my South America solo trip that I wanted to capture travel in more detail, so took time to capture more footage, and make sure it was saved regularly, but I had no idea about what filming and making a video was really about. The start of this channel showcased the original highlight videos from S.E Asia, but there was a story that needed to be told! Those videos acted as a prequel to starting travel vlogs in the return to South America in 2019.

This video and these memories are the most personal project to date, and the trickiest story to tell. I hope you enjoy.

[Repost] Day Trip to Bako National Park – Taman Negara Bako

It has been a while since I visited Bako National Park. The last time I visited it was in 2020 as you can see in this video.

Located in Sarawak, Bako National Park is a must-visit destination in East Malaysia, accessible by boat. From the city centre, travellers can drive or take a bus (for RM1) to the Bako boat jetty and then take a boat to the national park. The boat ticket is about RM30 per way. It takes about 20 minutes to reach the national park. Note that an RM20 entrance fee applies to every tourist entering the national park. In short, expect to pay no more than RM100 for your entrance ticket and boat rides. Prices may change, so please visit for more information.

I'm not sure how much a private boat costs today, but my sister paid RM200 in 2020. There were only four of us at the time, meaning the price per person was RM50.

Where to get the bus?
If you're coming from the town centre, you can take the bus (it's red in colour) near Kuching's open-air food court. The locals call it 'open-air'. The buses are somewhere there. Before entering the bus, look at the sign that shows the bus route first and ask the driver if the bus goes to Bako. If the bus hasn't arrived, you'll need to wait a bit. From Bako, you can get the bus near the small local restaurants near the jetty. If you don't see the bus, that means it hasn't arrived yet. The bus returns once every hour (from what I remember). I took the bus before. The waiting time was okay.

What can you see at Bako National Park?
Well, a diverse flora and fauna. I was fortunate to come across some of the park's highlights, such as Proboscis monkeys, silvered-leaf langurs, and Bornean bearded pigs. I even saw a few snakes, including the Green pit viper. There are many trails at the national park, so one can easily spend days exploring the park, which means spending the night at Bako National Park is recommended. By spending more than a day at the national park, you won't have to rush and can enjoy the park's night walk. I have done both day trips and overnight camping and they were fun. Would I return? Yes, absolutely.

Boat Ride Crocodile Watching at Maludam, Betong Sarawak Malaysia Borneo Travel 婆罗洲游踪乘船观看鳄鱼砂拉越马来西亚红树林

Location : Kampung Maludam, Betong Division, Sarawak, Malaysia.

Named after the nearby Malay village of Maludam, this national park is probably the least known in Sarawak. Out of curiosity, we made an effort to visit it when we were on our back to Kuching from our Bakun trip ( We entered via Pusa and made our way to the ferry which would bring us across to Beladin another Malay village 15min drive away to Maludam.

Our first choice homestay of Ms Eka was full and she referred us to her friend Haji Eddie a school teacher. We put up two nights with Haji Eddie whose wife cooked awesome food.

After dinner was over Hj Eddie arranged for a boatman to meet us to negotiate a tour package. The boatman had some experience handling foreign tourists while working for a tour operator a few years ago. When I asked him why the tour operator stopped coming, he could not give any reason. Anyway, we agreed on the price and the itinerary.

So at 8am the next morning we walked a short distance to the jetty to meet our boatman. The current was strong as we headed upstream along the tannin coloured river. Water level was very much higher than what I had seen in some online photos. At some points razor sharp wild pandan leaves were overgrown right across the narrow river. My advices is use a big hat and long sleeve shirt if you do not want to have your face and arms cut by these thorny plants. Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) should be responsible for the safety of tourists by regularly trimming these overgrown wild plants since they collected RM10 per head.

10min into the boat ride we started seeing proboscis monkeys. A lot more than we had expected and probably the most exciting place in the whole of Borneo to watch these long nose primates.

The only disappointing part was the poor condition of the boat engine. Not only was it noisy but each time it slowed for us to take photo, it stalled. Much time was wasted restarting it and this went on the whole trip. I was thinking at that point in time that kayaking here would be more fun if we could stealthily paddle up to the unwary proboscis who would be feasting on the white fruits of the mangrove on the edge of the river. But on second thought, the image of a lurking crocodile somewhere below the darkish water gave me the chills.

After we were done with the wetland where we saw about 50 proboscis, 2 macaques, 1 Pied hornbill, 1 green viper and 1 eagle, we headed towards the river mouth for the crocodiles.

Along the way, we could see several Iban longhouses.

Would be interesting for foreign tourists if longhouse visits could be made a part of the tour package. We managed to spot 6 young crocodiles along the riverbanks.

The adults could only be seen at night according to the villagers. So where did they go during the day? In the wetland feasting on the blue legged prawns?! If you come to Maludam just for the elusive red banded langur monkey, then you are going to be disappointed. I was going around asking many villagers about it which they all know about but never seen it. Pretty much like the Big Foot in the Himalayas story.

Things to do in Kuching City - 3 Days Travel in capital of Sarawak Borneo Malaysia

This video bring you along to my 3 days travel in the capital of Sarawak Borneo Malaysia, the Kuching City. Follow me to explore the best things to do in Kuching CIty, visiting must visit places, try the best local Kuching food and some adventure in national park. Hope this video useful to be your Kuching travel guide.

Borneo is one of the largest islands in the world. This big island is consist of 2 countries; Malaysia and Indonesia. 2 states Sarawak and Sabah belongs to Malaysia while Kalimantan belongs to Indonesia. As for now, Kuching City is the largest city in Borneo and is the best gateway access to Borneo adventure.

I travel to Kuching Sarawak Borneo Malaysia via flight from Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. There might be some direct flight from international destination so do check your local flight provider for the info. To enable a maximized Kuching travel i travel in the evening so I reach Kuching Sarawak in the night. This enables my next day trip a full day available for my exploration.

So what to do in Kuching City? First up, let's visit Cat Museum. Kuching in Malay language quite resembles the word “Kucing” where “Kuching” means cat. Therefore in Kuching City, the cat is considered as a symbol of the city thus a dedicated museum for the cat. The location of this museum also in higher altitude therefore a spectacular panorama of Kuching City.

Orang Utan is one of the protected species in Sarawak Borneo. There are conservation and protection effort from the government. So the next things to do in Kuching City will be a visit to Semenggoh Wildlife Center. This is a must visit spot during your Kuching travel. Come here in the morning or afternoon, there is high chances you able to witness orang utan feeding times. The feeding time is 9-10am and 3-4pm so plan your time well.

This is another awesome must visit spot in Kuching trip. Sarawak is famous of the indigenous tribe and here all these cultures, traditional houses, dresses, dances are available for exploration. There is even a cultural show at 11.30 am and 4pm. So do plan your time well.

There is a national park in Kuching. It is called Bako National Park. This protected park has a variety of rainforest, flora and fauna to be explored. But one thing that attracts me the most is the Proboscis Monkey, which is famous for its big nose. There are many trails to be explored but since there is limited time in my 3 days Kuching travel, I have to choose the short and high chance to see Proboscis monkey. I chose the Teluk Paku Trail where it leads to a beach and Proboscis sighting is frequent here. The time here was brief but I manage to see Proboscis at last.

Next we went for our dinner. I heard that there is a place that serve the freshest seafood but it is out of town. With my rented car, I drive all the way to seek for the freshest taste. And we finally reach the destination, Muara Tebas Seafood. The food live up to what I have heard. I order seafood with cooking style with minimum flavouring, boiled prawn, raw oysters, steam fish. What is freshness? The meat taste sweet even without flavoring or minimum flavoring.

I travel back to Kuching city, the waterfront particularly to enjoy the night walk. Next day, I cross river with the local sampan to reach my next target, Fort Margherita. Next to the fort, is the DUN where State Legislative Assemblies will be held. This is a very beautiful building, another symbol of Kuching Sarawak. Just next to the DUN is the Astana Sarawak aka Sarawak Palace. This is the place where the Sarawak Governor resides.

The final leg of my Kuching trip bring me to a Chinese temple Tua Pek Kong, India Streets and a wonderful boat ride along the Sarawak River.

Exploring Wild Borneo-Bako National Park, Sarawak

Bako National Park on the island of Borneo is Sarawak, Malaysia’s oldest park established in 1957. It packs in a huge variety of landscape, vegetation and wildlife for it’s small size of 27 sq/km. Only accessible by boat, if you’re based in Kuching you’ll just need to make arrangements to get to Bako Bazaar and the boat launch dock. There’s a public bus, or you can hire a taxi or Uber. By the way, although I did have to wait 18 minutes I was very lucky to get an Uber ride back to Kuching. Unless you want to pay a premium boats don’t leave the dock unless there are 5 passengers, so as long as you arrive not too late in the morning, it shouldn’t be long before you’re on your way, especially if you’re by yourself. The boat ride out to Bako, which takes about 20 minutes is an adventure itself, passing by fishermen and remote beaches and seeing the Satubong Peninsula. Once you reach Teluk Assam beach that leads to park headquarters you disembark from the boat and wade into shore. You could easily spend a half day just here, looking at the peninsula in the distance and checking out the wildlife that hangs out around the beach, including proboscis monkeys we caught a glimpse of right in the trees as we approached headquarters. You must check in at park headquarters when you arrive and present your park pass you purchased at the boat launch. It’s also a good idea to register which trail you will be on at the desk. Once you’ve completed that then you’re off to enjoy the beauty of Bako National Park. One of the guides that I met at the boat launch suggested I walk the Pandan Besar trail which gives you wonderful views, a chance to see unique vegetation, like the carniverous pitcher plants, and should allow enough time to do some wildlife viewing around the beach before the last boat leaves for the day at 3pm. Once you’re out of the lower trail and the jungle canopy you are in the scrub like padang vegetation and exposed to the sun, so it’s a good idea to bring a hat and use sunscreen. It would have been really easy to miss these pitcher plants that I saw close to the ground while walking the trail. They are abundant in this area. You will dip back into Kerangas forest, kerangas is an Iban word, Iban are the indigenous people of Sarawak. It means “land which cannot grow rice”-you’ll come out of the kerangas in the final stretch of the Pandan Besar trail. This is the prize at the end of the trail. Lovely views looking out at this beach, which is unfortunately inaccessible by foot. Another beach close by Pandan Kecil can be hiked from here. One thing you need to be mindful of when hiking here is the possibility of tropical downpours, Bako is part rainforest and on my way back I headed right into a huge rainstorm, which pretty much finished my hiking and exploring for the day. But it was a truly amazing taste of wild Borneo. Thanks to: for their awesome soundtrack music! Write A Podcast Review: Visit the Far East Adventure Travel Patreon page and become a sponsor!:

BAKO NATIONAL PARK - MUST SEE in BORNEO

Bako National Park - must see in Borneo!

Bako National Park in Borneo, Malaysia, is an absolute must-visit destination for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts! In this dedicated video, we delve into the wonders of this incredible national park.

The park is renowned for its most famous resident, the Proboscis Monkey. With its distinctive large nose, spotting these unique creatures is a real treat, especially at the beach. The best times to catch a glimpse of them are early morning (around 7-8 am) and late afternoon (between 3 and 5 pm), so plan your visit accordingly if you're on a day trip.

While exploring the park, you'll also encounter other fascinating animals. Keep an eye out for the Bearded Pig, recognized by its characteristic beard, as they roam freely across the island in search of food. Macaques are another common sight, though their mischievous nature means caution is advised. Bako National Park

Bako National Park is one of the prettiest place in Malaysia. I was lucky to be there on a trip with my lovely girlfriend during the long Gawai holidays. The view is just too pretty not to share! There's the Sea Stack, Teluk Paku beach, and we are even lucky enough to see the elusive proboscis monkey! We also made friends with some German tourists during our trip. Overall, it's a trip that's worth the time and money. Lots of cheap seafood for sales when we got back.

Arriving to KUCHING the HARD way

We’ve always wanted to come to Borneo since the first time we landed in Malaysia last year. We didn’t make back then but we made it happen this time and here we are.
Borneo is the third largest island in the world and it’s divided into 3 different countries - Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. Borneo has the most beautiful rainforests we’ve ever seen and a great variety of animals inhabiting them. Some of the rainforests have been destroyed for the palm oil extraction and the government of the three countries have been working on it trying to preserve what’s left now.
But let’s not talk about that for now, right now we are staying in Kuching and the vibe here is different from peninsular Malaysia, people are extremely friendly and welcoming and even though it’s a big city it doesn’t feel like it everyone is so chilled and the traffic, if we can call it traffic, it’s barely inexistente.
