Ever seen a mud volcano ?????

Just about an hour from Baku, the entry to this mud volcano is free. You only have to pay for a taxi to get here (roughly Rs. 1000). The mud is cold even though it’s a volcano and it is really good for your hair and skin. We were told not to stay in there for longer than 10-15mins or it would start affecting our guts! Make sure to carry a towel and a change of clothes with you. You can wash off the mud in a nearby volcanic lake but the water is super salty and not very clean so you will need some fresh water to wash it all off as well.

Azerbaijan styles itself as the land of fire. It’s a resource rich country, where oil literally seeps out of the ground and occasionally just doesn’t stop burning. A lesser known side effect of the huge stores of natural resources, has been the strange occurrence of rare mud volcanoes.
I was visiting Gobustan National Park not far from the Azerbaijani capital of Baku, and a place where the mud volcanoes can be walked right up to and where the brave can even bathe in them.

According to legends... many years ago, a local shepherd made a small fire on one of the hills to warm up on a cold day. That fire never went out. That place is called YANAR DAG, which means burning mountain.

The secrets of AZERBAIJAN - Gobustan, Mud Volcanoes, Burning Mountains & Fire Temples
Hi everyone! This is episode three of my Caucasus series in which I travel through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Armenia.
In this video, I venture outside of Baku, the capital, to see a bit more of Azerbaijan. Any country has a bit of magic to experience outside of the big city and, despite a rainy day, I decided to try my luck.
First though, I give a tour of my hotel room, explain some details about the currency (the Azerbaijani Manat) and show what an Azerbaijani breakfast looks like. They have some delicious food and - interestingly - drink jam in their tea instead of sugar!
After breakfast, Jamal of the tour company picks me up at the hotel and gives some more information about Baku and Azerbaijan before pointing me to the bus.
The tour starts with a visit to Bibi-Heybat Mosque, a 1990s recreation of the historical 13th century mosque in Baku. After visiting the mosque, we have a quick stop for coffee and snacks at a local shop before heading to the Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape Reserve where we learn more about the impressive rock carvings. We finish our Gobustan experience with a visit to the Museum.
Then we head to the mud volcanoes in the Absheron district. Azerbaijan has the most mud volcanoes in the world and you don't want to miss this part of the video for a bit of a slippery experience!
After visiting the mud volcanoes, we head back to Baku where we visit the area outside the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre, including the 'I Love Baku' sign for a photo opportunity or two.
Our next stop is the impressive Burning Mountain, or Yanar Dag, a natural gas fire that has been burning for at least 4,000 years. This symbolises and personifies Azerbaijan as the 'Land of Fire'!
The final part of the tour itinerary is the Ateshgah Fire Temple where we learn about the historical significance of fire for Zoroastrians, Hindus and Fire Worshippers, as well as the importance of the complex for traders on the historical Silk Road.

Flames jet into the air 3 metres (9.8 ft) from a thin, porous sandstone layer. Administratively, Yanar Dag belongs to Absheron District of Azerbaijan.
Unlike mud volcanoes, the Yanar Dag flame burns fairly steadily, as it involves a steady seep of gas from the subsurface. It is claimed that the Yanar Dag flame was only noted when accidentally lit by a shepherd in the 1950s. There is no seepage of mud or liquid, which distinguishes it from the nearby mud volcanoes of Lökbatan or Gobustan.

On the territory of Yanar Dagh, the State Historical-Cultural and Natural Reserve was established by the Presidential decree dated 2 May 2007 which operates under the control of State Tourism Agency of Azerbaijan. After major overhaul between 2017-2019, Yanar dagh Museum and Yanar dagh Cromlech Stone Exhibition were launched in the area of the Reserve.[4][5]

Azerbaijan is in the first place in the world for the amount of mud volcanoes. Mud volcanoes broadly spread in Azerbaijan. There are about 350 of 800 volcanoes of the world in Azerbaijani Republic. Local people call them “yanardagh” (burning mountain), “pilpila” (terrace), “gaynacha” (boiling water) and “bozdag” (grey mountain) alongside its geographical name mud volcanoes. Underground and submarine mud volcanoes also famed in Azerbaijan. There are more than 140 submarine volcanoes in the Caspian Sea. Eight islands in the Baku Archipelago are mud volcanoes by origination. The other kind of mud volcanoes is found out in wells. Their activity can be observed among strata of various ages. According to the information, mud volcanoes initially began their activity in the territory of Azerbaijan 25 million years ago. About 200 eruptions occurred in 50 volcanoes in the territory of Azerbaijani Republic since 1810. Eruption of mud volcanoes is accompanied by strong explosions and underground rumble. Gasses come out from the deepest layers of the earth and immediately ignite. A height of a flame over volcano reaches 1000 meters (Garasu volcano). Toragay volcano erupted 6 times from 1841 to 1950. Mud volcanoes associated with oilfields by origination. Rich oil and gas fields were found out in the territories of mud volcanoes (Lokbatan, Garadgh, Neft Dashlari, Mishovdagh and others). In addition, lava, mud and liquid erupted by mud volcanoes are used as raw materials in chemical and construction industries and also in pharmacology. Geologists of NASA studying Mars planet, concluded that mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are similar to uplands of the planet for their structure. On September 5, 2004 the greatest mud volcano in the territory of Azerbaijan was added into the Guinness World Records.

Over a thousand mud volcanoes are known to exist in the world, and some 400 of those are in the coastal area of Azerbaijan.
While mud volcanoes (also known as “sedimentary volcanoes”) never grow to the size of a normal volcano, topping out at around 10 km in diameter and 700 meters in height, (among the largest mud volcanoes in the world are Boyuk Khanizadagh and Turaghai, both in Azerbaijan) they do occasionally get the chance to show off, as happened in 2001.
Every 20 years or so, one of these mud/gas volcanoes will ignite deep below the surface and create a massive explosion. While generally not dangerous to people, as they are far outside of most city centers, it is believed that six shepherds and over 2,000 sheep were killed by a mud volcano in Bozdagh, Azerbaijan.
There is a silver lining to having a country covered in mud volcanoes. Mud volcanoes are closely associated with hydrocarbon and petrochemical stores underground, hence the gas trying to escape to the surface. A few of these gas leaks are constantly on fire, shooting small perpetual flames into the air and some believe that these perpetual flames are strongly connected to the appearance of the Zoroastrian religion in Azerbaijan some 2,000 years ago.

Yanardag also known as Burning mountain is a natural gas fire. This natural gas fire blazes continuously on a hillside on the Absheron Peninsula on the Caspian Sea 25 KM northeast of the Baku city. So, the Yanardag belongs to Absheron district in Azerbaijan.
The flames from the Yanardag jet out at least 3 meters into the air from a thin porous sandstone layer. Because it gets a steady seep of gas from the subsurface so the flame from the Yanardag burns quite steadily. This burning mountain is different from nearby mud volcanoes of Lokbatan or Gobustan as Yanardag has no seepage of mud or liquid like mud volcanoes has and so mud volcanoes don’t burn as steadily as Yanardag does.
Yanardag is 116 meter hill located on the top of natural gas pocket causing continuous flame eruption. This is the nature of this burning mountain. The reason given for continuous eruption of flames is that hydrocarbon gases are emanating from below the earth’s surface which causes the fire. From the sides Yanardag offers spectacular view for the spectators especially at nights. However the people standing have to inhale smell of gas and thick air around this open fireplace. Heavy winds twist the flames into some bizarre shapes adding mystery to the region. There is this tongue of fire also rising from the surface of the streams located around the hill. These streams are popularly called Yanar Bulaq, or ‘Burning Spring’.
The mud volcanos and petroglyphs at Gobustan National Park are two of the most interesting things to see in Azerbaijan. Here’s how to travel from Baku to Gobustan to visit both on easy and affordable day trip.
Post-apocalyptic is the only way to describe the landscape in Gobustan National Park. Situated just 67km south of Baku (or an hour’s drive) along the Caspian coast, Gobustan (Qobustan) is all rock and oozing mud, scars and craters.
Easily accessible as a day trip from the capital, the mud volcanoes near Baku are a must see if you’re visiting Azerbaijan.

It is also home to Yanar Dag, which means “burning mountain.” This hillside has been continually burning since the 1950s. It is fed by natural gas. How crazy is that?
