Large Iceberg Breaking near Ilulissat

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut.

**A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly**

Ilulissat Icefjord - Large iceberg breaking over

Once in a life time experience...The last day before returning home this huge iceberg cracked right in front us.

We were quite baffled so please disregard the at times stupid commentary ;-)

This video was shot at the same time near the water:

Incredible GLACIER CALVING & TSUNAMI WAVE Caught On Camera! | Glacier Wall Collapse (Greenland)

Huge Icebergs collapsing and breaking from the Ilulissat Glacier are often up to 3,000 feet in height (1,000 meter) and are broken up by the force of the glacier and icebergs further up the fjord. Subscribe for more ►

Greenland is home to the only permanent ice sheet outside Antarctica. The sheet covers 3/4 of Greenland's land mass. The Ilulissat Icefjord drains 6.5% of the Greenland ice sheet and produces around 10% of all Greenland icebergs. Some 35 billion tonnes of icebergs calve off and pass out of the fjord every year (Find out more here: In the last 25 years, the Greenland Ice Sheet is rapidly melting, having lost 3.8 trillion tons of ice between 1992 and 2018, a new study from NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) finds. The melting ice has added 0.4 inches (11 millimeters) to sea level rise. Its cumulative 3.8 trillion tons of melted ice is equivalent to adding the water from 120 million Olympic-size swimming pools to the ocean every year (Find out more here:

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres. These events have become major tourist attractions. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone (Find out more here:

About this video: Incredible glacier calving & tsunami wave caught on camera (Bo B.)
This video is showing huge icebergs flipping over and subsequently a series of multiple iceberg and glacier wall collapses. Due to the enormous amount of ice falling into the water, the glacier calving event even triggered a series of mini-tsunami waves up to 16 feet in height (5 m) breaking on the shore.

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. Calving of glaciers is often accompanied by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 60 metres (200 ft) high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are not often observed.

GIANT Iceberg Collapses in Greenland - Glacier Calving

This incredible glacier calving footage was captured of the Helheim Glacier in Greenland. The Helheim glacier is one of the largest glaciers in the south-east of Greenland and is said to feed the waters of the Helheim Fjord.

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. The sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier or iceberg often causes large waves around the area and can result in a shooter which is a large chunk of the submerged portion of the iceberg surfacing above the water. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. These events have become major tourist attractions –a beautiful landscape, cracking sounds, large icebergs and sometimes even tsunami-like waves create overall stunning spectacles for all visitors. Iceberg Collapse in the Denmark Strait

Icebergs floating out at sea during the Arctic summer are subject to waves, winds and rising temperatures, causing them to collapse, crumble, explode and flip over unexpectedly. This huge iceberg was spotted by MV Sea Spirit, an expedition vessel chartered by Poseidon Expeditions (a polar cruise operator) in the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland, and its demise was captured by expedition photographer Lauren Farmer.

Iceberg Collapse

An iceberg suddenly collapsing at Leading Tickles in Newfoundland

Massive iceberg stops Canada tourists in their tracks | New York Post

A giant iceberg has appeared on Canada's doorstep and residents of the area nearby say it's the largest they've ever seen. The massive glacier is over 150 feet high, sits in shallow waters off the coast of Newfoundland, and tourists haven't been able to resist the area. Experts say there has been a spike in icebergs this year, but none as ice-cold as this beauty.
