Europe's Largest Gothic Palace Was Once Home to Popes | National Geographic

Located in the sunny south of France, picturesque Avignon was once the seat of power for the Catholic Church. The historic center of Avignon is known for its architectural and cultural significance, both of which largely stem from its brief stint as the seat of the papacy.

Avignon’s role as residence of the popes was relatively short-lived: the Avignon papacy – or “Babylonian captivity,” as some dubbed it – was controversial within the Church and lasted only from 1309 to 1377, but it left behind a lasting imprint on the city.

Beginning in 1335, a magnificent palace was constructed to house the popes. Completed in less than 20 years in two phases, the Palais des Papes is the largest Gothic palace in Europe. The palace also holds a collection of intricate frescoes by the Italian master Matteo Giovannetti.

Seven popes occupied the palace before the papacy moved back to Rome in 1377. But the palace in Avignon remained property of the papacy until the French Revolution, when it was seized by revolutionaries. It was later converted into a military barracks and prison under the Napoleonic administration.

Today, the property is preserved as a museum and visitors can stroll through its halls and gander at the former private chambers of the pope.

The palace is surrounded by other monuments, including the Cathedral of Notre Dame des Doms, which was built in 1150.

Nearby is the Petit Palais. It was once the residence of bishops, and now houses an art museum with an extensive collection of works from the Middle Ages and Renaissance.

A short stroll from the cathedral is Rocher des Domes, a park with panoramic views of the Rhone.

And adjacent to the complex is the remnants of the St. Benezet Bridge, which once spanned the Rhone. Today only four of the original 22 arches remain, but the construction is solid enough that tourists can still stroll along the span.

Luckily getting to Avignon is quite easy, and a well-developed tourism infrastructure makes travel simple. The best way to avoid the crowds is to visit in the spring or fall.

Avignon, France - Palace of the Popes and other museums

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
The Palace of the Popes in Avignon, France is the world’s largest Gothic building. Constructed over 600 years ago, this remarkable palace ranks among the 10 most-popular sites in all of France with nearly 700,000 visitors per year.
Click to Subscribe
Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, powerfully built like a castle on the outside, on the interior, a sumptuous palace.
It was built as a home for the Popes because during the 14th century the Popes left the Vatican in Rome where they had always ruled from and relocated to Avignon here in France staying for nearly 100 years making this the most important center of power in Europe for a century, the city's Golden Period during which great mansions were built. Money flowed in, the wall was constructed around the town for protection. They created a dazzling palace fitting to their high position of authority and wealth filled with the finest furniture and artworks creating a massive structure 15,000 square meters in area, about four times bigger than the typical Gothic cathedral.
Then walk a few minutes north from the Place du Palais into a lovely public park called the Roche des Doms, resting on the top of a small hill overlooking the Old Town. From the ramparts take in the beautiful views across the rooftops of the city and across the Rhône River. Coming down will bring you to the Pont St-Bénezet, Avignon's legendary bridge built in the late 12th century and another UNESCO World Heritage Site.
One of Avignon's major museums is an art museum, called the Musée Calvet and is located in the lower section of Rue Joseph Vernet. The museum is set in a magnificent 18th-century mansion with collections of fine art and decorative pieces from the 15th through 20th centuries. You’ll find excellent paintings in here representing most of the important phases of art history.

Avignon, France - pedestrian zone

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Continuing our visit to Provence, France. We're going to take you on an extended walk through the pedestrian zone and narrow streets on the east side of downtown Avignon, in the south of France, an area filled with shops, people and historic buildings. The only way to see this part of town is by walking. Old town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes and narrow residential streets with little back alleys, perfect for strolling.
Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, no cars allowed, especially in the shopping center just southeast of the Place de l’Horloge. It's like one big shopping mall. And this historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day, for it is a compact zone about 1/2 mile wide and about 1/2 mile long.

France - Avignon. Old town Provence (center of the city). walking tour 2023 [4k 60 fps]

France, Avignon - located on the banks of the Rhone River. The most famous landmark of Avignon is the Palais des Papes. In the XIV century it was the temporary residence of the popes. The large territory of the old city gives many hours of walking. I liked the old city; this is a place where you want to return. I also want to note the French cuisine - it is wonderful.

Have a nice walk with me through the picturesque streets of the old town in Avignon!

Avignon - France-day 1A

Home to nine popes during the 14th century and one of the most beautiful cities in France today, Avignon is a treasure house of palaces, museums and meandering lanes, surrounded by an old fortified wall that still protects it from modernization.
That is one of the beauties of a walled town in Europe: Not only did it protect the town from bandits and invaders during the Middle Ages, but in the 20th and 21st centuries the wall is protecting these historic centers from modernization. This is what the visitors want to see, and it brings in revenue for the city.
This city in the heart of beautiful Provence lays claim to dozens of historic monuments, especially the great Palace of the Popes which was gradually enlarged into an imposing fortification during the 60-year papal residency and is now a museum open to the public.
Begin your orientation with a look at the two main squares in the center of town, the Place de l'Horloge surrounded by cafes and bistros and the adjacent Place du Palais containing the city's most important and historic structure, The Palace of the Popes.
This UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered the largest Gothic palace in all of Europe and a priority place to see in Avignon, although its original furniture is gone and the cavernous rooms are mostly empty.
There is also a wine shop inside the Palace, and if you choose not to pay admission to go see the Palace, by all means go into to the wine shop and the gift shop because their admission is free, and sometimes they have selected wine tastings in the wine bar, and it's a very good place to purchase wine.

Within the wall of Avignon you have a nicely preserved old town, and yet the same time, very modern shops that are way up to date and populated by hip people.

This movie combines several shorter earlier movie to provide a complete picture of this wondrful city.
The pedestrian shopping district extends ten square blocks south, but save it for tomorrow so you can devote more of this first day to the historic sites and west side of town.
Energetic types might opt for a 10-block circular stroll through some of these quiet back alleys towards the small 14th-century church of St. Pierre and over to busy Rue Carnot, then walk back to the palace on Rue de la Croix.
Avignon’s Old Town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes, narrow residential streets and little back alleys, perfect for strolling. Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, especially in the shopping center just southeast of Place de l’Horloge.

While this neighborhood is very old, the shops and galleries are up-to-date with modern interiors and contemporary European items for sale.
You'll find Avignon, the capital of Provence, is a perfect home base from which to visit other nearby places like Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Pont du Gard, Nimes, Uzès, Saint-Rémy, Les Baux-de-Provence and Marseilles, which we cover in other movies.

Historic Centre of Avignon - UNESCO World Heritage Site

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Avignon was a small, anonymous town in southern France until the 14th century, when it became the seat of the Papacy and found itself thrust into the centre of European politics. Almost overnight, the town changed forever, and though the Popes only stayed for a hundred years or so, their legacy still lives on today. Let's check it out!

Avignon, historic center, France

The city of Avignon, lying on the Rhône River, became the residence of the Popes between 1309 and 1377.

The Papal Palace (Palais des Papes) was built in Gothic style between 1335 and 1352 by Pope Benedict XII and Pope Clement VI in two main stages, first the Palace Vieux and later extended with the Palace Neuf.
The city-state of Avignon remained the property of the Holy See until it became part of France in 1791 during the French Revolution.

The Avignon Bridge (Pont Saint-Bénezet), built in the 12th century, was damaged and reconstructed during the following centuries.
It was no longer maintained after the 17th century and currently only 4 of the 22 arches remain.

Historic Centre of Avignon France

Avignon, France part 2 walking tour in Old Town

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
Avignon's Old Town is a charming neighborhood of shopping lanes, narrow residential streets and little back alleys, perfect for strolling. Some of these routes are exclusively for pedestrians, especially in the shopping center just southeast of Place de l'Horloge.
This historic center can easily be seen on foot in one day, for it is a compact zone about one-half mile wide and long.
The curved shape of these streets will keep you guessing what's around the bend, or which museum or monument is coming up next. Streets are level, riddled with little plazas, fountains, trees, some benches, and numerous cafes.
While this neighborhood is very old, the shops and galleries are up-to-date with modern interiors and contemporary European items for sale. And at night it stays quite lively. It's very safe spot - 10 o'clock, 11 o'clock at night, because the shop will be closed, usually by about 8 o'clock, but the restaurants, cafés and bars are open, so to be sure to pay several visits to this wonderful Rue Joseph Vernet.
Detour a few blocks up and down Rue St. Agricol, which offers a similar environment of pleasant shops and leads to the main square of town, Place de l'Horloge.

Avignon, France part 1, walking tour in Old Town

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
We start at one of the most picturesque streets in town, Rue des Teinturiers, the street of the tinters.
Several ancient water wheels along this cobbled lane are still turning, pushed along by a quaint little, tree-lined canal.
The wheels were once used to provide power for the manufacturing and dyeing of textiles. Now this is a trendy street, with cafes, boutiques and a small theater, a mere ten-minute walk from the town center. We have a quick look at the Palace of the Popes then continue walking the small lanes of the Old Town of Avignon.
