Yes, these are the mountains which gave the creators of movie 'Avatar' the inspiration for their setting... however may have looked somewhat different to the day when this was shot... somewhat foggy! However that gave us quite a unique experiences nonetheless.
---------- About Forest Park ----------
Zhangjiajie National Park is located in the central-eastern area of China in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area which features multiple protected areas. The national park encompasses an area of 18.59 square miles (48.15 sq km). It is a GANP Ambassador Park.
The larger Wulingyuan Scenic Area covers 153.5 square miles (397.5 sq km). The collective Wulingyuan area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is probably the most coveted part of the area.
The park is comprised of dense forests, deep ravines, deep canyons, unusual peaks, caves, and pillar-like rock formations blanketed throughout the park. These pillar rock formations are what the park is renowned for around the world.
The pillar rock formations are not typical limestone-eroded pillars. The pillar rock formations are comprised of quartz-sandstone and formed from physical erosion caused by the abundant rains.
The landscapes created by the mountains, pillar rock formations, dense forests, and clouds are the epitome of Chinese landscapes that inspire so many different types of artwork.
The Bailong Elevator and Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge are two record-holding features that help visitors experience the splendor of the national park.

Yuanjiajie Scenic Area is located on the north part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park with its area of 1200 hectares and its altitude of 1074 meters, narrow in the north and south, long in the east and west. It is like a belt and so is regarded as 48-mile Yuanjiajie. Close to Huangshi Village and Yaozi Village, bordering Tianzi Mountain Area and Yuanjiajie Area, forming a situation of tripartite confrontation. It is worthy of the name of the core of whole Wulingyuan Scenic Area.
- Yuanjiajie natural scenery has a style of its own. The tour line on the top of the cliff is 3500 meters long, constructed against the mountain, linking Back Garden, Mihun Stage and the First Bridge Under the Sun.

The stunning Tianmen Mountain (Heaven's Door Mountain), near the city of Zhangjiajie, province of Hunan, China.
The video is following one of the two standard routes around the mountain: The longest cable car in the world from the city center to the mountain top; West rim cliff-hanging walkway and glass Skywalk; Tianmen temple; East rim cliff-hanging walkway and glass Skywalk; elevators down to Tianmen Cave; the 999 steps Stairway to heaven down to the square with the bus stop; bus down the 99 bends road.
The other possible route is exactly the opposite to the one above, the tourists must choose which one to take when they buy the ticket to the mountain.

A short video from my trip to, probably, one of the top destinations in China- Zhangjiajie. Even though I've already had rather high expectations of this place, I was still simply blown away by the grandeur of this natural wonder! Was really fortunate to explore this majestic place pretty much on my own, as well as to find a few secret paradise spots that I'll remember forever.

Hey there, welcome back to my channel! In this video, I'll take you on an incredible journey through Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, sharing insider tips and revealing the must-see wonders of this mesmerizing destination.
Dinner with Mr. Chen and his wife turned out to be a game changer for our travel plans. They shared valuable insights that made us rethink our itinerary, like the surprising closure of the famous Glass Bridge during our visit. Google didn't have our back, but Mr. Chen did, saving us time and disappointment.
Let's dive into the heart of Zhangjiajie Park, a sprawling expanse covering 11,900 acres, which is roughly equivalent to 48 square kilometers. To put it in perspective, it's like having your own slice of Manhattan or a space larger than Monaco but smaller than cities like Paris or Barcelona.
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is just a short 45-minute drive from Zhangjiajie City. The most common way to access it is through the Wulingyuan Scenic Area entrance, typically by taking a bus. Keep in mind that entrance fees vary by season; for our September visit during the high season, it was 298 yuan for a four-day ticket, which includes entrance and shuttle buses. Elevators and cable cars are separate expenses.
Now, let's talk about the park's two levels: ground floor trails and top floor trails, connected by various paths. If you're short on time, I highly recommend taking the lifts instead of hiking.
Our recommended route, in collaboration with Mr. Chen, made the most of our day. We entered from the Wulingyuan Scenic Area, starting on the lower level and taking a Tianzi cable car ride.
Zhangjiajie Park's stunning sandstone pillars were shaped by millions of years of natural forces. The park's beauty is breathtaking, with surreal mountains and a touch of mystique from the lingering smog. Legends tell tales of giants frozen in time and ancient wisdom whispered through the wind.
But, here's the catch—the tourist crowds can be overwhelming. It feels like a race against time with tour groups and tour leaders wielding microphones disrupting the tranquility you'd expect in a national park. Even shuttle buses move like they're auditioning for a Fast and Furious sequel.
Zhangjiajie's fame, inspired by Avatar, brings even more tourists, especially during weekends and summer. The park's Avatar Mountain, formerly known as the Hallelujah Mountain, is a hotspot.
As captivating as Zhangjiajie is, spending too much time among these pillars can make the magic wear thin. The initial awe fades as familiarity sets in.
For nature lovers, this place is perfect, with spectacular scenery and a reliable transportation system. While some areas suffer from tourist congestion, visiting during the off-season can help avoid the crowds. We stayed in Zhangjiajie Town but recommend Wulingyuan for its park access.
Our adventure led us to the Bailong Elevator, a colossal engineering marvel. Be prepared for long queues, as it's incredibly popular. But trust me, the experience and views are worth it!
In conclusion, consider a 3-day stay to strike the right balance in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. Beyond the park, explore the wonders of the Grand Canyon, the thrill of the Glass Bridge, and the serenity of Baofeng Lake. And remember, be prepared for crowds, hiking, and a handy roll of toilet paper.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a national forest park located in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province, China. It is one of several national parks within the Wulingyuan Scenic Area.
In 1982, the park was recognized as China's first national forest park with an area of 4,810 ha (11,900 acres). Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is part of a much larger 397.5 km2 (153.5 sq mi) Wulingyuan Scenic Area. In 1992, Wulingyuan was officially recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was then approved by the Ministry of Land and Resources as Zhangjiajie Sandstone Peak Forest National Geopark (3,600 km2 (1,400 sq mi)) in 2001. In 2004, Zhangjiajie Geopark was listed as a UNESCO global geopark.
The most notable geographic features of the park are the pillar-like formations that are seen throughout the park. Although resembling karst terrain, this area is not underlain by limestones and is not the product of chemical dissolution, which is characteristic of limestone karst. They are the result of many years of physical, rather than chemical, erosion. Much of the weathering that forms these pillars is the result of expanding ice in the winter and the plants that grow on them. The weather is moist year-round, and as a result, the foliage is very dense. The weathered material is carried away primarily by streams. These formations are a distinct hallmark of the Chinese landscape and can be found in many ancient Chinese paintings.
One of the park's quartz-sandstone pillars, the 1,080-metre (3,540 ft) Southern Sky Column, was officially renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain (Chinese: 阿凡达-哈利路亚山; pinyin: Āfándá hālìlùyà shān) in honor of the movie Avatar in January 2010. The film's director and production designers said that they drew inspiration for the floating rocks from mountains from around the world, including those in Hunan province.

Wulingyuan ([ù.lǐŋ.ɥɛ̌n]; Chinese: 武陵源) is a scenic and historical site in the Wulingyuan District of south-central China's Hunan Province. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992.[1] It is noted for more than 3,000 quartzite sandstone pillars and peaks across most of the site, many over 200 metres (660 ft) in height, along with many ravines and gorges with attractive streams, pools, lakes, rivers and waterfalls.[1] It features 40 caves, many with large calcite deposits, and a natural bridge named Tianqiashengkong (Bridge Across the Sky)[1], which is one of the highest natural bridges in the world.
The site is situated between 29°16′0″N 110°22′0″E and 29°24′0″N 110°41′0″E in Zhangjiajie City and lies about 270 kilometres (170 mi) to the northwest of Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province. The park covers an area of 690 square kilometers (266 square miles).[2] Wulingyuan forms part of the Wuling Mountain Range. The scenic area consists of four national parks, which are the Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Suoxi Valley Nature Reserve, Tianzi Mountain Nature Reserve and the recently added Yangjiajie Scenic Area. Overall there are over 560 attraction sights to view.
