Jimmy Buffett plays Autour du Roche at Le Select in St. Barts

Autour du Rocher is about a local hangout that Jimmy and his friends would often visit until it burned down more than 20 years ago. It was a place of great fun I was told by Marius who started Le Select 66 years ago. Jimmy joined the Tremendous Johnson Band at Le Select on Saturday, Feb. 13 to play this St. Bart's favorite.

Autour Du Rocher was a bar with guest rooms in St. Barts that burned down in the 90's and was a hangout for many locals and visitors. Jimmy Buffett performed it at the 70th anniversary of Le Select in St. Barts on Nov. 11, 2019. Jimmy has been visiting since the 70's and played for the 50th and 60th anniversaries of Le Select.

Autour Du Rocher is about a remote St. Barts bar and hotel that closed in the 1990's. It was the late night place to go by all. Jimmy Buffett sang this in St. Barts at the BAZ Bar.

Hey Everyone!!
For as long as I could remember I wanted to have my honeymoon in St. Barths and travel there. Unfortunately the timing was not working out because a huge hurricane ruined the most gorgeous island. Phil and I had a really rough year so we decided that we deserved to finally cross this off our travel bucketlist! It beyond exceeded our expectations. We even think it surpassed the Maldives (where we ended up on our honeymoon). I hope you enjoyed this video as much as I enjoyed living it! Please do not hesitate to ask questions!

St Barths - Gustavia, Saint Barthelemy [4K]

Gustavia is the main town, port and capital of the posh #caribbean island of Saint Barthélemy aka St Barts aka St Barths - top amazing luxury travel destination; St Barths is known for its white-sand beaches, chic hotels and designer shops. Gustavia, encircling a yacht-filled harbour, combines high-end dining with historical attractions like The Wall House, whose exhibits highlight the island Swedish colonial era. Perched above the town is 17th-century Fort Karl, offering views of popular Shell Beach.

While it is acceptable to wild swim and walk topless or even nude on many beaches, it is never acceptable to walk in town in a swimsuit. One needs to cover up with a stylish sundress or equivalent. A simple t-shirt won't do. This is all part of the laid-back and casual chic ethos of the place.

St. Barths ranks among the most expensive getaways on the planet. The island caters to an upscale clientele who can afford things like $20,000-a-night stays in posh villas. The story of how St. Barths became the so-called St. Moritz of the Caribbean goes back to the mid-1950s, when the über-wealthy families discovered the centuries-old charm of the island's British-Swedish-French colonial heritage. Couple that with a laid-back ambiance, friendly locals and (at the time) cheap land, and this was just the spot to build million-dollar estates overlooking St. Bart's virgin beaches.

Today, they're the homes away from homes for the world's silky set, from land barons, billionaires like Roman Abramovich, oil titans, hi-tech CEOs and other corporate moguls to people who sit on thrones back home to Oscar-winning movie stars to A-list rockers and rappers of the likes of Paul McCartney, Sting, Beyonce, Jay-Z and Jon Bon Jovi.

St Barths Bucket Regatta ~ Saint Barthelemy ~ Best UAV Drone Caribbean ~ WeBeYachting.com

Saint Barthélemy, a volcanic island fully encircled by shallow reefs, has an area of 25 square kilometres (9.7 sq mi) and a population of 9,035 (Jan. 2011 estimate). Its capital is Gustavia, which also contains the main harbor to the island. It is the only Caribbean island which was a Swedish colony for any significant length of time; Guadeloupe was under Swedish rule only briefly at the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Symbolism from the Swedish national arms, the Three Crowns, still appears in the island's coat of arms. The language, cuisine, and culture, however, are distinctly French. The island is a popular tourist destination during the winter holiday season, especially for the rich and famous during the Christmas and new year period.

The landing runway is 2170 feet long, and the approach, from either direction, is often plagued by varying degrees of turbulence. As a result, the French aviation authorities require that a special permit be issued to any pilot who intends to land in St. Barts.

Those planning to land in St Barts will have to land in Grand Case, French St Martin, first, in order to get their qualification. St Barts Control tower (Telephone: 590 590 27 65 33 - Fax: 590 590 27 98 96 ) will tell you how to contact a French instructor for certification. It takes a couple of hours, and includes touch-and-go in both directions. Don't do it on a windy day with a hangover.

The landing fee varies from 8.5 Euros to 12.5 Euros, and parking fee is 5.5 Euros/ night.

There are no mechanic nor fuel on the field. Best nearby place for that is at Grand Case Airport in St. Martin. No fuel is available during their long lunch hour.

When you arrive or depart, you are required to deposit a General Declaration form with the immigration officer at the door and file a flight plan : call (+590) 590 27 65 33 or fax (+590) 590 27 98 96.

Saint Barths Bucket Regatta

Between 1986 and 2001, the Nantucket Bucket flourished, becoming a premier Mega Yacht Regatta that invited owners and crews of the world’s largest sailing yachts to sail to peak performance in a safe venue, in the spirit of wholesome competition. The concept of pursuit racing was brought to life by the Bucket, with each Yacht assigned its own start time on a clear starting line for safety, and the start time calibrated to induce the yacht’s speed handicap.  Consequently, the first yacht to cross the finish line, wins.

Within a decade, the St. Barths Bucket expanded beyond all reasonable expectations.  With a limit of 30 yachts required by the local Authorities to keep a handle on the event, the Bucket has been all but full every year since 2005.  In recent years, the fleet has overflowed with applicants even before the Notice of Race is published!

As the Bucket Regattas have evolved, the organizers have kept a tight focus on maintaining the original, non-commercial flavor of the event.  Sponsorship is funded exclusively from the Marine Industry.  The major shipyards, Perini Navi, Royal Huisman Shipyard, Alloy Yachts, Holland Jachtbouw and Vitter’s Shipyard have been particularly generous in their sponsorship of the event.  The clear understanding between the Bucket Race Committee and all sponsors is that these Regattas present a magnificent opportunity for networking within the fleet.  They are explicitly not, an opportunity for overt marketing.  The instruction to the sponsors is that if they need to explain the difference to their representatives, then they are sending the wrong people.
The primary reason for the success of the Bucket Regattas is that the emphasis is more upon wholesome fun than about winning. The stated goal is to “win the party”.  The omnipresent, over riding conundrum for the Bucket Raced Committee is to convince the most competitive owners on planet  (demonstrated by the fact that they own these things in the first place) that winning isn’t important!!

Autour du Rocher by Jimmy Buffett in St. Barts March 2019

Autour du Rocher was a classic Caribbean bar on a secluded hilltop in St. Barts where a lot of interesting things went on. For a brief time Jimmy Buffett was a part owner. It burned down in the 90's and remains in ruins since then. Jimmy sang this at BAZ Bar after the Bucket regata in March 2019.

Autour du Rocher

How to find Autour du Rocher, and a tour of what it looks like circa 2011. To get there, go to St. Barths, Lorient Beach, head west to the end of the beach, and follow this musical treasure map.

2016 EDIT: Autour is still there, but the path leading up to it from the edge of Lorient Beach is now fenced off with a No Trespassing sign. It would be laughably easy to walk around the fence but you'd then be trespassing in full view of all of Lorient.

St. Barth Feels Good

The residents of St. Barth fought the virus and eliminated it from the island for more than 1 month. As a result, many organizations and businesses were allowed to open on May 11th. This video celebrates this opening week. I Feel Good is sung by Don Soley and the camera and production are by Edmund Gudenas. Editing by Christopher Pridnia. All in the video are volunteers. St. Barth remains a very special place because of the residents and local government that responds to challenges.

Jimmy Buffett in St. Barts for the Bucket in March 2014

Jimmy Buffett doing a free show at the BAZ Bar in St. Barts during the St. Barts Bucket Sailing Regatta in 2014. Here he plays a song about St. Barts titled Autour du Rocher. The band with him is the Evan Goodrow Band from Boston. This video was recorded by Ed Gudenas, owner of St. Hazards on Middle Bass Island, Ohio.

Jimmy Buffett at BAZ bar in St. Barts for LeSelect's 60th Anniversary

A couple of days before Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefer Band put on their great show on Nov. 7, 2009, Jimmy stopped by BAZ bar in St. Barts on the waterfront in Gustavia. He sang a few songs with the musicians from Nashville that were already playing before a crowd of about 100. Marius Stakelborough started the LeSelect bar in St. Barts 60 years ago and Jimmy was there to help make it a special week long celebration. He was very nice to his fans and went out of his way to see a lot of them. Thanks Jimmy.
This video was taken by a good friend of Marius who also started a Caribbean style resort on Middle Bass Island, Ohio that was inspired by LeSelect, St. Barts and Jimmy.
