Welcome to Auckland, New Zealand - The World’s Most Liveable City 2021

The greater Auckland region encompasses the city proper and the gorgeous surrounding towns and landscapes.
It's rare that visitors restrict themselves solely to the city area. And why would you? There's plenty to see and do right in the heart of the city, but travelling further afield opens the opportunities considerably. You can't miss getting out onto the waters of the Hauraki Gulf and exploring its many islands. One of the closest to the mainland is Waiheke Island, home to emerald waters and world-class wineries. Further north lies Goat Island Marine Reserve, a thriving and accessible aquatic ecosystem.
The natural delights on offer go beyond the area's beautiful waters. Rainforests, thermal springs, sprawling parks and volcanic cones are just the start.

It is hard to believe that only 24 years ago the downtown residential population was a little over 300. By 2018 more than 54,000 people called the inner city home. Auckland central is now growing at a rate six times faster than any other Auckland suburb.

Attitudes are changing. Auckland is compact, a pleasant environment for walkers and with the advent of car sharing, Uber and electric scooters for hire, a carpark is no longer a requirement. City officials are working tirelessly to make central Auckland more pedestrian friendly by widening footpaths, creating laneways and gardens and lowering speed limits. Moves are afoot to make the main thoroughfare, Queen Street, car-free by 2025.

The transformation of central Auckland, which once had a reputation for congested traffic, ugly motorway junctions and low quality “shoe-box” apartments, into a desirable place to live with quality homes and high amenity values is nearly complete. Since the 1990s a dozen historical buildings have been converted for residential use and now repurposed commercial buildings and brand new builds have been added to the city's housing mix.

The newly enhanced, downtown leisure amenities range from the city’s beloved public parks and more intimate green spaces and plazas to pockets of heritage architecture, hidden laneways and the remodelled Waitemata Harbour waterfront. Commercial Bay, which opened in June 2020, is a huge complex with hundreds of hospitality and retail outlets. It has further enhanced the city's amenity value for urban dwellers. It also reflects on the city’s cultural heritage, in particular its mercantile history.

The Auckland City Council is investing heavily and improving transportation with the underground City Rail Link. Other important infrastructure projects are planned to keep abreast of the region’s anticipated growth. These improvements not only benefit the residents but also improve the quality of life for the 125,000 people that work in Auckland city.

Herne Bay, New Zealand's most expensive suburb 4K

Known for its extensive Harbour views Herne Bay frequently tops the most expensive suburb list in Auckland. Herne Bay sits on the southwestern shores of the Waitemata Harbour, just to the west of Northern Motorway and is bordered by the suburbs of Ponsonby, St Marys Bay and Westmere.

Herne Bay has been a prosperous area since the 1850s due to its outlook over the Waitemata Harbour. It continues to be an exclusive suburb, as it ranked as the most expensive suburb in New Zealand in 2015.

The suburb is named after Herne Bay, a fashionable but respectable seaside resort in English county of Kent.

WLG 2040 - The future starts here

OUR NEW MASTER PLAN SHOWS HOW WE WILL ACCOMMODATE FUTURE GROWTH FOR THE REGION OVER THE NEXT 20 YEARS.

The proposed masterplan includes a terminal expansion, runway and taxiway system improvements, new freight facilities, additional aircraft parking stands, and a modern fire station. The plans also accommodate rapid transport from Wellington’s city centre.

Under the plans, a new multi-purpose domestic and international jet terminal would be constructed. The development will extend to the south of the existing terminal, with the surrounding apron and at-grade carparking areas repurposed for jet aircraft. Meanwhile, the northern parts of the terminal will be converted for regional traffic – essentially ‘flipping’ the terminals around.

This master plan sets out our vision to meet the needs of travellers and airlines, but also provide new possibilities and opportunities for the city, the region and New Zealand.
