Most people go to Bora Bora or Tahiti, or even Rangiroa, but I found something even better.
This atoll is known for shark diving, Manta rays, and one long stretch of island that is so thin, you can see from the Pacific to the lagoon just by turning your head. Under 900 people live there, and it's perfect, with one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen!

Marlon Brando's Private Island Resort - Tetiaroa Atoll, French Polynesia | The Brando
Tetiaroa, best known as Marlon Brando's private island, is a retreat fit for royalty. Once considered a playground for the wealthy, this atoll served as a summer residence for the former chiefs and kings of Tahiti. After many years of being inaccessible to the general public, a new eco-friendly, ultra-luxurious resort, The Brando, has changed that. Tetiaroa is part of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. This small, secluded atoll is located 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Tahiti and considered an extension of the Arue commune. Fittingly, the island name is a Polynesian word meaning stands apart or at a distance. The inner lagoon, which is only 4.5 miles (7 kilometers) wide, is completely enclosed and protected by 13 surrounding coral islets. Marlon Brando became enamored with French Polynesia when scouting the islands for his 1962 movie, Mutiny on the Bounty. While on location, he also fell in love with his third wife, Tarita Teriipia, the Tahitian beauty who starred alongside him in the film. In an effort to keep the islands close at heart, Brando sought to purchase his own section of paradise—and he set his sights on Tetiaroa. Tetiaroa was a highly desirable piece of land. The atoll once belonged to the royal family and was subsequently passed through the hands of many private owners; thus, Brando's negotiations were met with much resistance. In 1966, after several failed attempts, he finally landed the 99-year lease that granted him exclusive ownership of Tetiaroa. Over the years, Tetiaroa served as a secluded hideaway from his life in the Hollywood spotlight. The atoll had remained a pristine South Pacific paradise—and Brando sought to keep it that way. His lifelong dream was to maintain the atoll in its purest condition and allow others to enjoy it. He pictured a sustainable, ecological habitat; and although he died in 2004, his dream has been realized. The Pacific Beachcomber Group has developed the Brando Resort in line with the actor`s vision. The Brando aims to be the most luxurious eco-friendly resort on the planet. It has been built to the highest environmental standards and has applied to receive its LEED Platinum Certification, the highest accolade from the U.S. Green Building Council. The resort is also aiming to be 100% energy independent. Electricity requirements are met by a combination of solar panels (35%) and generators fueled by coconut oil (20%), while revolutionary technology known as seawater air conditioning (SWAC) uses deep seawater to cool the rooms efficiently and economically. The Brando Resort has also been built with the support of the Tetiaroa Society, a local organization dedicated to the research, education and conservation of the atoll. The society manages a research center on the resort grounds, providing scientists from around the world a place to gather and conduct biodiversity research. It also funds educational programs for students, visitors and residents. Tetiaroa is a delicate atoll with a rich history and strong spirit. Although once very regal, it offers the most humbling experience in French Polynesia. By hardly leaving a carbon footprint on the earth, this tiny locale will leave a lasting impression on your heart.

The Brando French Polynesia
The Brando is a unique luxury resort on French Polynesia’s breathtakingly beautiful atoll of Tetiaroa. It sits on one of a dozen small islands (motus) that surround a spectacular three-mile wide lagoon. The motus are all privately owned and available exclusively to the resort’s guests and visiting researchers.
With access to the atoll by a 20-minute private plane flight from Tahiti, the all-inclusive resort features 36 accommodations, each of which are secluded and offer private pools on beautiful white-sand beaches frequented by sea turtles and exotic birds.

The Sexy Side of Sustainability: The Brando, French Polynesia
First up on our year-long quest to find the most romantic and sustainable honeymoon destinations...Tetiaroa, French Polynesia! For centuries, this gorgeous atoll north of Tahiti was a sacred meeting ground for Polynesian royalty. In the 1960s, Marlon Brando came to these coral islets to film Mutiny on the Bounty, fell in love with his leading lady, and made Tetiaroa their home. They had a dream to use tourism, science, and the local community to preserve the island. Decades later, that has been fulfilled by The Brando Resort & the Tetiaroa Society environmental and cultural nonprofit. The Society’s projects, from green sea turtle conservation to The Blue Climate Initiative (a UN Ocean Decade project) are 70% funded by the resort and furthered by visiting researchers from around the world.
Though sustainability is probably not the main reason Kim Kardashian, Jay-Z, or Obama stayed here. It’s a private island and one of the most luxurious resorts in the world, with ocean-view villas, personal infinity pools, lavish spa, gourmet cuisine, and five-star service. And all that decadence is supported by solar power, seawater air conditioning, a permaculture garden, extensive recycling, and LEED-Platinum construction.
To understand both sides of this gold coin, we spent two days working alongside the researchers at the Tetiaroa Society and two more living the luxe life at The Brando. Both were equally inspiring and the combination took our breath away.

Tetiaroa | Marlon Brando's Island | French Polynesia
This is Marlon Brando's private island Tetiaroa on a day trip from Papeete, Tahiti. After a three-hour catamaran ride, we take a small dinghy to get to the island, which is actually a collection of atolls. On one part of the island, there is The Brando, a luxury resort. On another part, there is Bird Island, a bird sanctuary. We walk to Bird Island and see stunning water, beaches and the birds flying around the island. People are no longer allowed on the island so we see it from a distance. We also find a sign placed by the Family of Marlon Brando. As a fan of Brando, I never thought I'd see this island so this was a beyond-bucket-list trip for me. The walk to Bird Island was hot and rocky but it was worth every minute! The excursion started before sunrise and ended as the sun was setting but included a delicious lunch. We went with Poe Charters.
