Look! Google is coming
Google Street View is finally coming to the Faroe Islands.
For years, the Faroe Islands have been left without Google Street View.
Taking matters into her own hands, Durita Andreassen from the Faroe Islands has spent recent months mapping out her beautiful home country using sheep equipped with solar-powered cameras, creating her very own Sheep View 360.
Following the launch of her project, thousands of people urged Google to make the Faroe Islands a part of Google Street View, and their efforts have now proved fruitful.
The Google Maps team has arrived in the Faroe Islands with one mission: to help the Faroe Islands create their own Street View.
With the support of the Street View Camera Loan Program, the Faroese people are now equipped with a Street View Trekker and a fleet of 360 cameras to help capture even more (but slightly less woolly) Street View imagery of the archipelago.
It is now up to the Faroese people and tourists visiting the Faroe Islands to create Street View using sheep, bikes, backpacks, cars, kayaks, ships and even wheelbarrows. Furthermore, the Visit Faroe Islands office in Tórshavn and Atlantic Airways at the airport will be loaning out Google cameras, and anyone is welcome to lend a hand in the exciting project.

This is my first Faroe Islands Travel Vlog in a series of 5, so I really hope you will enjoy this short series of fun travel videos of The Faroe Islands - some of the most remotes islands in Europe and one of the least visited countries in the world.
In this video we arrive and get to our Airbnb in Tjornuvik where we stay for 2 nights exploring Fossa Waterfall, the gorgeous and picture-perfect village of Saksun and the famous waterfall flowing over the side of a cliff quite close to the Faroe Islands airport. We mainly explore the island if Streymoy is the video - but we did do quick trips to one of two of the other islands two - but more of that in the next few videos!

Mjørkadalur, The Most Beautiful Prison in The World
Mjørkadalur is a valley on the Faroese island Streymoy in the Tórshavnar municipality. It has no postal code. It is located on the mountain Sornfelli above the fjord of Kalbaksfjørður. The buildings in Mjørkadalur used to be part of the Island Command Faroes, but now a part of the building is used as a detention for prisoners who serve short sentences. Criminals from the Faroe Islands who serve longer sentences are sent to prisons in Denmark, as there is no prison in the Faroe Islands, only a detention, which has room for 12 persons. It is however also used as a prison for prisoners who serve short sentences. (source:

The Faroe Islands: A House With A Grass Roof!
Scattered along these roads are many grass-roofed houses. Houses have been built like this for more than a thousand years, protecting from rain and thermal insulation.
A sod roof or turf roof is a traditional Scandinavian type of green roof covered with sod on top of several layers of birch bark on gently sloping wooden roof boards.
Until the late 19th century, it was the most common roof on rural log houses in Norway and large parts of the rest of Scandinavia.
By the way, there is much evidence that green roofs help reduce the flow of heat into and out of the surfaces they cover. The is also evidence that the benefit is much greater in the summertime because the reflectivity of the leaves of the plants and the evaporation rates are maximized in the summer.
