Volcan Chimborazo in Ecuador is the closest point on Earth to THE SUN, even closer than Mt. Everest!
Rising to 6268m (20,548 ft) above sea level, Chimborazo is Ecuador's highest peak. It even boasts a 200m gain on Mt. Everest to being the farthest from the centre of the earth (and (technically closer to the sun than Mt. Everest)! We visited this Volcano to do a bit of hiking at this insane altitude, as well as a mountain biking adventure down the mountain through the incredible Andes mountain range.

Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Ecuador. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. Mountain Biking Chimborazo: Ecuador's Tallest Mountain!
Mountain biking down Volcán Chimborazo was such a crazy thrill! Chimborazo is the highest mountain in Ecuador and the furthest point in the world from the center of the earth due to the equatorial bulge. This makes Chimborazo the closest place to outer space on earth and the Andean mountain surroundings are pretty otherworldly!
Yet what makes for such an awesome adventure here is mountain biking Chimborazo! We did this Chimborazo mountain biking tour with ProBici in Riobamba Ecuador. Their route is nearly all downhill and mostly singletrack for a total of 40 white-knuckle kilometers of mountain biking down Chimborazo.

Chimborazo is a volcano in Ecuador rising 6263 m above sea level. It is only 1 degree off of the equator. And because our globe is thicker around the equator, Chimborazo's summit is actually the farthest point from the center of earth. Ecuador is known for its many volcanos including Antisana, Cotopaxi and Cayambe. It is a true playground for mountaineers, alpinists and other climbers.

Chimborazo - Facts About Ecuador's Chimborazo Volcanic Mountain
Chimborazo Volcano is the highest peak in Ecuador, standing at 20,654 feet (6,295 m) above sea level. It’s only recently that we’ve gotten our Chimborazo facts straight: For many years it was presumed to be inactive, but recent studies show that it has erupted at least 7 times in the past 10,000 years, and still has some geothermal activity left in it yet. It’s often mistakenly referred to as Chimborazo mountain — but Mount Chimborazo is, in fact, a volcano (they’re different!). You’ll find this ice-capped beauty in the Chimborazo Ecological Park, and this short video can only begin to share just a tiny fraction of the interesting facts that volcanologists have gathered.
Hiking to the peak is quite a challenge, and Chimborazo is known as a good place for hikers to practice for Mount Everest. Once climbers reach the top, they’ll be at the closest point on Earth to outer space — although Chimborazo Volcano isn’t the world’s tallest formation (that’s Mount Everest), it’s located on the Equatorial bulge, giving it a boost. With the help of a guide, Chimborazo-bound adventurers make hiking plans to see the incredible view of the Andes from the summit, usually in the course of a multi-day trek.
Chimborazo Volcano has an important place in Ecuador’s landscape as well as in modern earth science. It is part of Ecuador’s famous “Avenue of the Volcanoes.” It’s also a stratovolcano, which means that its slopes formed from millions of years of compacting ash and pumice. Scientists are still using data gathered on Chimborazo Volcano by 19th-century scientist Alexander von Humboldt to prove the effects of climate change on alpine vegetation.
