Aruba - Walking downtown Oranjestad

A mid-afternoon walk from the Port of Aruba to the end of the Mainstreet.

We had some brief rain showers in the afternoon before this walk and it was still cloudy. Dark waters may be seen but are effect of the rain. Some of the highlights are the Royal Plaza mall, Parliament of Aruba, Renaissance Mall, Fort Zoutman etc.

This video has no talking so you may enjoy the environment sounds. Aruba is a very windy island, so my excuses for some of the high wind noises caused during this walk.

Oranjestad is the capital of the Dutch island of Aruba, in the Caribbean Sea. Near the marina, the 18th-century Fort Zoutman and the Willem III Tower, formerly a lighthouse, house the Historical Museum, which chronicles the island’s past. The Archaeological Museum displays indigenous artifacts dating back as far as 2500 B.C. Along the waterfront, L.G. Smith Boulevard is dotted with boutiques and shopping malls.

Day 9. Oranjestad Aruba - Walking downtown 2023.

DOWNTOWN ORANJESTAD WALKING TOUR || DINNER @ THE PADDOCKS || ARUBA 2023 VACATION

We checked out Main St in Oranjestad before sunset. Oranjestad is the capital of the Dutch Island of Aruba, in the Caribbean Sea.
A lot of tourist in the area due to 2 Cruise ships docked in Oranjestad port. We decided to eat dinner @The Paddocks while watching sunset. After dinner, we decided to go check out the Renaissance Market place. Too bad, we didn't go all the way to the park and might enjoy the lively evening of live music.

A day in Oranjestad, Aruba ( 4K HD )

Whether you're staying in one of Aruba's all-inclusives, came on a cruise or took a vacation flight on your own itinerary, one of the things to do is to hop in a car and explore its capital Oranjestad. Spanning just a few miles around the cruise terminal, Oranjestad is a condensed postcard view of the Caribbean Netherlands. You can rent a car in many places including the airport, cruise port and around town as well. Gas is not terribly expensive and you don't need much gas anyway - the island is only about 25 miles long. Oranjestad is great as a cruise ship port of call but in my view you'll see the better picture if you go beyond the walking distance from the terminal.
Oranjestad is a small town with quite a lot of one way roads. The most picturesque part of town with the Dutch architecture is about 1-2 miles in size and a day would be enough to walk about, pop into shops and boutiques, try some street food and more. Culture and atmosphere of Aruba is amazing and while this video only allows to witness that through the car window, hopefully it'll allow to judge how safe, vivid and pleasant the country is. Driving culture in Aruba is not much different from what you expect in the U.S. For the most part cars are newer, well maintained, road courtesy is there and you instantly feel at ease.
Thank you for watching!

Aruba... Walking around the Art Deco/Streamline buildings of the old Downtown of Oranjestad

Wandering around the old downtown of Aruba's Orajestad...often overlooked by tourists but a treasure trove of mid century modern architecture and classic Art Deco and Streamline Moderne buidlings right there among the palm trees and warm Caribbean breezes...some of it in need of TLC but all of it charming and another reason to love the Happy Island of Aruba.

ORANJESTAD Aruba [4k]

ORANJESTAD, Capital of Aruba.

Oranjestad (Orange City) is the capital and largest city of Aruba, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is located on the southern coast near the western end of the island country. In the local language, Papiamento, Oranjestad is often referred to as Playa. In 2010, the population of the capital was 28,294.
The town was built around Fort Zoutman shortly after it was built in 1796. Initially, the town had no official name, being known only as the town on the Bay of Horses (Paardenbaai in Dutch), a place from which horses were raised and exported to neighbouring Curaçao and Jamaica. In the early 19th century, Oranjestad was like a village, because Aruba had no large plantations or international traders. The total population of the island in 1816 was estimated at 1,732 most of whom were farmers. Fort Zoutman was the main building around which 200 small houses had been erected. The town had two churches: one Catholic and one Protestant. Nearby was the fishing village of Rancho.

Oranjestad became the capital city of the island in 1824. It was named after the first King William I of the Netherlands. During that period interest in Aruba increased due to the discovery of alluvial gold deposits. The oil industry discovered Aruba in 1924. The establishment of an oil refinery by Lago Oil and Transport Company not only resulted in a population increase, but a significant increase in the prosperity of the island. From the 1960s onwards, tourism became more important and has resulted in the creation of a large hotel zone. Administratively, the city has been split in two districts: East and West. Oranjestad, Noord and Santa Cruz have merged into one near continuous urban area covering the north of the island.
There is some Dutch Colonial architecture. Due to increased government interest in maintaining the island's cultural heritage, a number of old buildings and houses in the center of town have been transformed into colorfuly restored landmarks, such as the lime-colored City Hall on Wilhelminastraat.

???????? Rainy walk in Oranjestad Aruba

The weather in Aruba is normally mostly dry, but in today's video I took the opportunity that it was raining and did a walk in our capital city of Oranjestad. I started near the Wilhelmina Park continuing via our harbor crossing via the Royal Plaza (mall) to the shopping area. After Plaza Daniel Leo I continued showing you some of the old and historical buildings before I return to the place I started my walk. It was the first time I ever did a rain walk and I must say it was not so easy but in the end I am happy with the result. I know it's not what you envision when you think of a vacation here but I hope you like this different look of Aruba for a change (yes it does rain here sometimes but mostly briefly or at night).

Copyrighted music will be muted or replaced.
