After years of crisis and isolation, Venezuela is reconnecting to the world. More airlines are opening routes, the US dollar is widely accepted and some locals say the worst is over. Is Venezuela ready to welcome international tourists? And: is it safe?
DW's Joel Dullroy visited Venezuela in January 2022. He went to some of the most touristic spots of the country: from the Isla de Margarita to the town of Mérida and the national park of Morrocoy.

From Madrid to Caracas in 10,5 hours. A trip that I wanted to do for so long. And it starts in the Capital of Venezuela - in Caracas.
In this video I am talking about my first impressions of the country and I will talk a bit about the recent history of Venezuela to make you understand where negative comments about the country might be coming from. I have heard it all. From It's not safe to It's impossible to travel in that country. But guess what: Nothing ever happened to me and I did travel through that country! Don't get me wrong. In general you should be careful in Latin American countries. Walking around with your brand new iPhone in your hand might not always be the best idea... But the big majority of the people are extremely kind, open-minded and curious about tourists and they will welcome you with the biggest smile ever!
Make sure to talk to locals, as they will be able to tell you where to go and what areas to avoid.
While this first video will talk a lot about how Venezuela works, its history and a few things that simply work differently in Venezuela, the next videos will be more about the culture and the country with its beautiful and unique nature. Chasing the elusive 737-200 in Venezuela (in the 737-400 cockpit!)

Today Gabe Leigh takes us to Caracas, Venezuela to continue on his mission to catch a 737-200, and in this video he’s flying on the 737-400, in the cockpit, with Avior Airlines. The destination? Barcelona, Venezuela, just a 30-minute hop to the east, where Avior has its main maintenance base. And it’s here that we’ll find Avior’s 737-200, YV2794, 40 years young, which as it turns out is getting a new lease on life, with all new parts and even a very fancy new livery. Stay tuned for next week when we’ll go much more in-depth into all that is going into fixing up this beauty of a -200. It’s not flying just yet, but we’ll get a lot of quality time with the aircraft.
Did you know that several 737-200 classics are still flying in Caracas in full passenger configuration? Including what may just be the oldest commercial jet in the world (with the possible exception of a few aircraft in Russia). But tracking them down is not so easy, and until arriving in the country it was difficult to know which of them were actually flying.
