What to see in Rarotonga | The Cook Islands

The beating heart of our little paradise will capture yours. Rarotonga, the hub of the Cook Islands, has so much to see and do, yet remains unspoilt. No traffic lights, no McDonald’s and no building taller than the highest coconut tree.

The warmth of the tropical sun surrounds you, the scent of frangipani washes over you, the most pressing decision that you face: should you climb the summit of the island's majestic volcanic peak, or explore the crystal clear turquoise waters and swim with schools of tropical fish? Either way you know you’ll enjoy your holiday in this tropical paradise we call Rarotonga.

There are quite a few restaurants in Raro with some of them being right on the beach. It is the perfect way to end a busy or relaxing day as you watch the sun set in to the Pacific ocean with a glass of wine or beer in hand and a superb meal right on the waters edge. One of my favourites was the Beaches Restaurant at Manuia Beach Resort. The outlook, restaurant and location were magnificent and the restaurant is based right on the beach in the sand. This is a true tropical island dining experience.

The sad news is this is our last travel vlog from Aitutaki, but the good news is there's 3 more vlogs to come in this Cook Islands series — all from exploring on Rarotonga. So for this final Aitutaki video we wanted to travel around and explore the REAL side of Aitutaki, the side you often don't see, and understandably so because most people will go straight to the stunning lagoon!

So what is Aitutaki really like? Chill, friendly, welcoming, delicious and beautiful! Here's what we checked out in this vlog:

Maunga Pu Lookout
Sonja's Organics
Avatea Cafe —
Tamanu Beach Resort —

We were hosted by Cook Islands Tourism to assist in making this travel series in Aitutaki and Rarotonga, but as always we have full editorial control over what we film, what we say, and how we share the experience with you in these vlogs. Luxury Rarotonga Accommodation! (Muri Beach & Night Markets) | Cook Islands Ep. 5 of 7

Rarotonga accommodation options — there’s resorts, holiday homes and hotels all over, but our favourite accommodation in the Cook Islands is this luxury villa on Muri Beach: ⬇ More Below ⬇

Welcome back to the Cook Islands and our 5th episode of 7 in this series of travel vlogs. We’ve tackled Aitutaki for the most part so far, so it’s time for Rarotonga and hunting out some luxury accommodation RIGHT on Muri Beach, the award-winning Te Vakaroa villas.

As we mentioned above, the cool thing about Rarotonga is how the accommodation mix has changed in recent years. There’s now some great holiday homes (some with pools even), cheaper back packing options, villas like this one and less expensive, and full blown family resort styles too. There’s an option for everyone. But if you’re wanting luxury, beach front living and proximity to walk and explore check out Te Vakaroa Villas. We actually spotted these villas last time we were in Rarotonga and made a note to check them out next time, safe to say it was worth looking into!

We were hosted by Cook Islands Tourism to assist in making this travel series in Aitutaki and Rarotonga, but as always we have full editorial control over what we film, what we say, and how we share the experience with you in these vlogs. There’s loads of incredible info about the Cook Islands here for your own holiday —

Getting Around Rarotonga in the Cook Islands

Rarotonga
Rarotonga is the largest of the 15 Cook Islands, though it is only 20 miles around. Known for its white sand beaches and lush tropical interiors, There aren’t any branded resorts or chain restaurants, no buildings taller than a coconut tree and no stoplights, so think local, but local doesn’t mean you give up luxury if that’s what you’re looking for. Although the Cook Islands are self governing, they work in free association with New Zealand. This is a tender port and you will land in Avatui which is a 15 minute walk from Avarua, the main city. The Te Run Manga or the Needle is a 1.5 hour hike from Avarua but you can continue to do a 3-4 hour cross island trek that begins in the north and crosses to the southern side of the island, ending at the Papua Waterfall. There is a public bus that runs clockwise and anti clockwise around the island and can get you in range of the trailheads, but a car or taxi can get you closer. Busses in both directions depart from Cook’s corner (Clockwise busses leave on the hour and counterclockwise busses leave on the half hour). A day pass in $16 NZ, thought they also take Cook Island Dollars. Aroa beach on the southwesternern tip of the island is popular for snorkeling, but so is the cargo ship that ran aground on Christmas Day in 1916 which is a 500 meter swim from shore. A $% NZ fee allows you to visit the Cook Islands Library and Museum in Averua. It is run totally by volunteers and offers WWII history from the region. On the eastern side of the island, the calm clear waters of the Muri Lagoon are perfect for swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking. If you’ve enjoyed this island, we think you’ll also be interested in the other videos in our South Pacific series including Papeete, Moorea, Bora Bora and Raiatea.
