Arica to La Paz by train (Chile / Bolivia)

Our first impressions exploring Arica, Chile

Crossing from La Paz, Bolivia to Arica, Chile was a nightmare in terms of Immigration. It took us over 5.5 hours to get processed and by the time we finally arrived in Arica we were beyond exhausted. For this very reason, we were thrilled that we budget a full day of rest in the city. This allowed us to sleep-in and wander the city casually without any real aim or goal in mind aside from booking onward travels to San Pedro de Atacama. Come join us as we discover vintage markets (flea markets), farmer's markets and eat the best Peruvian food we've ever had outside of Peru.

Our first impressions of Arica, Chile Travel Video Transcript:

Well good morning. As you can probably tell from the sunglasses and t-shirt we have left Bolivia and we are back to much warmer weather. Yesterday, we crossed over to Chile and we are visiting Arica. Which is actually a border city which sits between Chile and Peru right at the very top. So yeah, we're right by the beach, warmer weather and yeah today we're going to go out and explore.

So we should probably tell the story of how we got to Arica. Ha, yeah. It was a pretty good one involved in that. First off, we'll say that that bus ride was one of the most scenic we've ever been on. Absolutely incredible coming from La Paz to Arica in terms of going from a high altitude destination all the way down to sea level. Yes, it was supposed to take about 7 or 8 hours. Yeah. And it took over 15. Almost six hours at immigration. It was probably honestly the biggest gong show of an immigration I've ever seen. They had one immigration officer processing all of the people on the bus, so they were literally hundreds of people in line. And yet they had other immigration officers like sometimes two or three just checking out one car. Like it just totally didn't make sense. And there had just been a strike in Bolivia a few days ago so they had just opened the border and there were hundreds of people who wanted to get across because they had been waiting for days. Yeah, but anyways part of the adventure so we arrived last night exhausted but now we've had a good night's sleep and we're excited to explore Arica. Yes, the city looks great.

So one of the coolest things about arriving in a city and having no plans is that you just encounter all of these random things. And there appears to be a market setting up right now. Yeah, it is still a bit early. About eight in the morning or so. So it is just getting started but I think it is going to get busy later on today.

So this looks to be like a vintage market where they're selling used clothing. Although I did see some booths that were selling plants and teddy bears so I guess you can find a little bit of everything here.

And it looks like we've come across yet another market. This one is more like a farmer's market so they are selling fresh produce. Let's go through.

We are at the bus terminal buying tickets for our next destination. Want to tell us where we're going? Yes. San Pedro de Atacama. And what is funny is we went to a bus company called Atacama and they do not go to Atacama. We had to find another one. Which bus did we go with? Ah, I think Tour. Tour something. Tour something? I forget but we have tickets. We've got our tickets. We're going. That is the main thing. Night bus. Yes.

Cocina Peruana. So as you can probably tell from the sign we are having Peruvian food in Chile. But don't worry. We are planning to eat Chilean food while we're here. It is just you know Peru is so close and we love Ceviche and we've found this restaurant so we had to go in. And Aji de Gallina. Yes, let's go in.

So tell me about that fantastic meal. That seriously was fantastic. I don't give a lot of restaurants an A plus but I do for this one. Authentic Peruvian food done at a high level.

And that is a wrap for Arica. We didn't make it to the beach. No, or any museums. Or any major landmarks as a matter of fact. But I mean that what our stop here was all about. Just resting, buying tickets to San Pedro. Yeah, and we got to see flea markets and some other things. We had good food and that is all we really wanted to experience. Now we're on to a new destination. Yeah, so great impressions from the city. We would definitely recommend it as pit stop. And yeah, Arica was fun.

Arica to La Paz by train (Chile / Bolivia)

A journey from Arica on the Pacific coast of Chile to La Paz, capital of Bolivia, high in the Andes. This line was once a busy freight link to Bolivia, and had adhesion and rack sections.

A stunning ride where we climb over 12,224 feet as we ascend to the Altiplano in our Bolivian railcar.

Arica to La Paz railway, December 2011, Still in use!

December 21st, 2011, in Arica - Chile. I had just crossed the border from Peru and was cycling down to Arica when I spotted this locomotive hauling a few flatbeds north of the city. This is part of the Arica to La Paz railway which is still is use. In Arica itself, I found that the railway is not used at all to the old station and harbour. The passenger sevice between Arica and Tacna in Peru still operates as a totally separate system. Sorry the vid is so short.

La Paz - Guaqui by train (Bolivia)

We ride the train from La Pas Alto to the lakeside port of Guaqui in Bolivia on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Here we meet the twice weekly train ferry from Puno carrying grain. The journey is across barren and sparely populated land up on the Altiplano.

At 12,600 feet above sea level, the inlet of Lake Titicaca is magnificent with wildlife and reed beds.
Sadly, the ferry from Puno no longer operates as traffic is sent by road directly to La Paz, so this line is now without a service.

Chile Bolivia (Crossing the Andes Mountains)

DAY 1 – SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA - HITO CAJON– LAGUNA VERDE – GEYSERES
You will be picked up from your central hotel in San Pedro de Atacama around 8 am to be taken to the border at Hito Cajon (border of Chile / Bolivia). After passing through the border formalities it is a short journey to reach Laguna Verde where we will see the emerald green waters of this mineral rich lake (n.b. only green if there is some wind churning up the mineral - if calm there is a beautiful reflection of the volcanoes). We then head towards the geysers Sol de Mañana to witness the bubbling hot mud pools and shooting of steam many meters into the air. Next stop will be Laguna Colorada - a fascinating lake with red water and we can see many flamingos feeding along its shores. Here we will stay in a basic hotel for the night (shared accommodation and no shower).
DAY 2 - LAGUNA COLORADA - DESIERTO DE SILOLI - LAGUNA HONDA - SAN JUAN
We depart on this second day after breakfast around 8 am and we have a chance to see Laguna Colorada again as we pass by a different side of the lake. We will travel through the Siloli desert area and see surreal rock formations. Further along today we pass by Laguna Honda to witness its sulphury smell and pass by some other high altiplano lakes. In the evening we arrive in the town of San Juan where we will stay the night.
DAY 3 – FULL DAY ON SALT FLATS - SALAR DE UYUNI
Today we will visit the amazing salt flats. Here we will see the ojos del sal were water is bubbling up through holes in the Salar, we will see where local workers gather salt into mounds and visit Isla Incahausi where we will find giant cacti and have great panoramic views of the surrounding salt flats. After leaving the salt flats we will visit the town of Colchani to see how the salt is processed and you can also ask your driver if he can take you to the Train Cemetery for the final stop on the tour before arriving in Uyuni. There will be plenty of time to stop and take photographs of the incredible salt flats throughout the day before we return to Uyuni in the evening around 3-5 pm.

Arica (Chile) to Tacna (Peru) by train

The line from Tacna in Peru to Arica in Northern Chile is isolated from the rest of the Peruvian railway network, and crosses desert for much of the way, finally taking to the road on the approach to Tacna.

Our journey took us on a return trip from Arica in a railcar for an afternoon in Peru.

Traveling from Cusco, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia by Bus

In this video, we will cross the Bolivian border. We leave Cusco, Pero and travel by bus to La Paz, Bolivia.

Crossing the Bolivian border is normally safe, however, we ran into problems due to the border being closed.

In this video, we take a bus from Cusco, Peru to Puno, Peru to the Bolivia border.

Unfortunately over the past few month's the Copacabana Border has been having protests and on several occasions, they have closed the border.

There have been many protests in Peru and Bolivia and many roads, businesses have been closed.

It's not a very good time to visit South America as from our experience we have run into protests in every country we have visited so far.

After doing research we quickly learned this has been an ongoing problem and isn't likely going away anytime soon.

Luckily for us, Bolivias protests we have witnessed haven't been violent; However, they have caused massive disruptions in our travel plans and have cost us thousands of dollars in rescheduling hotels and flights that we're non-refundable.

We feel safe, but are very annoyed with the situation.

The bus ride from Cusco to Puno took about 8-9 hours and was an. overnight bus.

We didn't get much sleep, the seats only recline slightly and the road was extremely bumpy.

We arrived in Puno at around 5AM and waited in the hotel lobby for hours until a room became ready.

We stayed overnight in Puno, Peru for one night.

During the day in Puno, we visited the floating islands on Lake Titicaca. Lake Titicaca, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in the Andes Mountains, is one of South America's largest lakes and the world’s highest navigable body of water.

Said to be the birthplace of the Incas, it’s home to numerous ruins.

Its waters are famously still and brightly reflective. Around it is Titicaca National Reserve, sheltering rare aquatic wildlife such as giant frogs.

The next day we boarded the Bolivia Hop bus and began our trip to Copacabana.

When we're 10 minutes from the border, they had announced that the border was closed.

We only had one option, to drive backward for a couple hours and try to enter Bolivia from another border.

Everyone's hotel in Copacabana was already booked and we all lost lot's of money from this.

When we arrived at the alternative border, we had many problems.

A stop at the border should have taken 1 hour, turned into a 6-hour ordeal, and there were no good restaurants or anything it was just a small town with a few convenient stores and dirt roads with garbage everywhere.
