Argentina's Northwest - Things to do in Salta, Cafayate & Purmamarca

I traveled to the Northwest of Argentina to explore the colorful valleys, taste the wine and to show you the best things to do in Salta, Cafayate and Purmamarca

The stunning regions of Salta and Jujuy are not as popular outside of Argentina but offer so much to see and do. I've heard of the Valles Calchaquiés and the Hill of the seven colors before but I was overwhelmed seeing it myself.

Starting in Cafayate I take you on a journey to both regions and introduce you to the wineries of Cafayate where the Torrontés is produced, I explore the Quebrada de las Conchas with its rock formations, I visit the Hill of Seven colors in Purmamarca at the Quebrada de Humahuaca and I show you around in one of the most beautiful cities of Argentina: Salta.

Again I was able to fly the drone to give you a scale of these impressive landscapes and I got some really nice aerial footage of the red Canyons as well as the vineyards and Cafayate.

Beside all those sights in Salta & Jujuy I recommend you to try the local food. The empanadas, the locro, the humitas and tamales are the most typical food and so delicious!

HOW TO TRAVEL NORTHERN ARGENTINA: Quebrada Flechas, Cafayate & Ruta 68

HOW TO TRAVEL NORTHERN ARGENTINA: Quebrada Flechas, Cafayate & Ruta 68

In this video we wake up in the tiny desert town of Angastaco, where we unexpectedly stayed the night before, you can see what happened here if you missed the previous video: we were so glad we stopped when we did because the scenery that we woke up to was not something to miss by driving by in the dark.

After spending a few hours admiring the incredible scenery we completed the drive to Cafayate where we had some lunch and wine in a beautiful bodega called Piatelli which not only had great wine but also amazing food, service and views to die for! We explored the town of Cafayate before making the famous drive along Ruta 68 where we stopped off at all the incredible places along the way and explored them all. This route really is a must drive. We have driven some incredible roads in Argentina but this one really wowed us with it’s dramatic scenery and the places to see along the way between Cafayate and Salta.

Next time!

Join us next time for part 3 of Northern Argentina as we explore the Jujuy region starting with a 4 hour drive North of Salta, to another desert town before making the steep ascent from Humahuaca to another high altitude spectacular feat of nature the Hornacal 14 coloured mountain.

If you can’t wait that long head over to our instagram or for exclusive behind the scenes content we’d love you to join us on patreon: Thanks for watching and we’ll see you next time!

NORTHERN ARGENTINAS MUST SEE PLACES!

NORTHERN ARGENTINAS MUST SEE PLACES!

In this video we hire another car from Salta and head out for more adventures in the incredible wilderness of Argentina! Heading off to find the Hornacal 14 coloured mountain we stop off on route in the tiny desert town of Tilcara which is a beautiful, rustic and quaint little place that we have dreamt about going back to ever since!

As usual we had lunch, wandered around the town, and fell in love with some more South American street dogs before making our way for the final stretch of the crazy journey up to the Hornacal 14 coloured mountains. We drove up the unpaved track which took us to 4350 masl and wow did we feel that altitude! There’s an ambulance stationed in the car park every day for good reason and warning signs about not walking or running due to altitude sickness and dizziness.

Luckily the car park places you right in front of the 14 coloured mountains so you don’t have to walk far, but just stepping out of the car took our breath away, I don’t mean because of the beautiful scenery I mean literally the second we stood up outside we struggled to breathe. We definitely should have had some cocoa leaves before coming here and plan to as we travel to more high altitude places in future.

The 14 coloured mountain really is incredible and is definitely one of the must see places in Argentina, we had a beautiful sunny day to enjoy another of natures masterpieces in Argentina, it is real, when you see pictures you’ll think it’s been edited to look that way but it really does look that incredible!

After a scenic drive back we decided to spend the night in Tilcara as we liked it so much and finished the day off at a Parilla filled with local musicians and great food before spending another chilly night in the desert.

Next time!

Join us next time where we head off on another high altitude adventure to the third largest salt flat in the world - Salinas Grandes!

Visiting Cafayate, Argentina

After our misadventure of a journey to Cachi we were hopeful for a smoother tour when we booked another day trip from Salta to Cafayate. Fortunately for us, things went really well this time. We ended up visiting some incredible national parks and visiting a vineyard for a wine tour. Afterwards we ate empanadas for lunch and tried wine ice cream for the first time (Malbec) before heading back.

Visiting Cafayate, Argentina Travel Video Transcript:

So good morning from somewhere in the province of Salta. Today we're doing another day trip. So we left the city behind and we're driving towards a place called Cafayate. Right now we're just making a little pit stop. A little breakfast stop. So we just ate some alfajores, had some coffee. Oh, they were so good. So good. Double layer alfajores. Oh, yeah. There was so much dulce de leche on them. So yeah, we're just going to continue with the drive over and we're going to be stopping at a National Park to see some cool stuff. And they are calling us over because we're leaving. We're leaving.

Alright, so we have made it to the National Park and our first stop is the amphitheater. Now apparently this place has 70% of the acoustics that you get in Theatre Colon in Buenos Aires. That is not too bad, huh? Pretty good acoustics. Are you going to test out your vocals here? Lalalala. Lalalala. Let's leave that to the professions.

Alright, so I think it is easy to guess where we are right now? Can you guess where we are? A vineyard. Yes, so after a scenic drive we finally arrived in Cafayate. And now we're doing a vineyard tour. And the best part of this is going to be when we get to sample the wine. Lots of wine. Yeah.

So you are having your first glass of Torrontés. Yes, and they told me to swirl it around ten times before trying it so I think I'm well above ten at this point. Maybe twenty. Ten times. That's quite the method. Nice and fruity and little bit dry too.

So this is church wine that you're drinking right now. This is used in mass. Yeah, I usually don't associate church and wine together but this one is really sweet. It has a bit of a honey aftertaste.

So we have a bit of a shopping stop here at the local market. And someone found a gaucho hat. I've always wanted to be a cowboy. Not just any cowboy. A gaucho cowboy. Alright, let's see if the hat fits.

It kind of does. A bit of a gringo cowboy. But...hahaha

Okay, so the cowboy needs his ice cream for dessert. Yes, and this is not just any kind of ice cream. This might look like strawberry and maybe walnut. But oh no no this is not that.. This over here is wine flavored ice cream. Malbec. And this is a local fruit called Cayote. So I'm going to try them both.

Is it like a creamy milk ice cream or like gelato? It is more like a gelato. Even a little bit more watered down than that. But yeah, you do taste the wine. It's refreshing. Now let me try this one. This one might be more milky. Yeah, it is.

This one is sweeter and it has that kind of a. I would describe it as kind of honey taste with a bit of kind of pulpy string. And I think it also has walnuts. Yes, it also has walnuts too. So do you have a favorite? I like the sweeter one. I like the cayote one a bit more but the wine one is also pretty refreshing.

So we're coming to the end of our trip. This is actually on the drive back. Right now we've pulled over at the three crosses look out point. So let us show you the views. Yes.

And this actually is our final stop. We're now going inside the Devil's Throat. That should be a frightening experience.

Okay, so final thoughts on Cafayate and the Calchaquies Valleys before we get back on the bus. Yes, so this was actually a really relaxing tour. Which was fantastic because tonight we are taking a night bus to Cordoba. So we got to see a lot today but the pace was very relaxed. We had a lot of time to kind of chill. Lots of wine, lots of cheese. Lots of wine, lots of good food. So now it is time to have a siesta on the bus. Sounds good to me.

This is part of our Travel in Argentina series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Argentine culture, Argentine arts, Argentine foods, Argentine religion, Argentine cuisine and Argentine people.

Find Your Perfect Escape in Cafayate: An Undiscovered Paradise for Wine Lovers

Cafayate was a total surprise to me. I went there without even realizing it is one of the biggest wine regions in Argentina. There are tons of bodegas and wineries spread out through the center of town and the outskirts. Watch me as I slowly get tipsy throughout the day at several wine tastings in Cafayate.

Cafayate, a picturesque town located in the northwestern region of Argentina, is famous for its wine production. The region's high altitude, sunny weather, and sandy soil make it an ideal location for growing grapes, resulting in some of the country's most exceptional wines.

Drinking wine in Cafayate is a delightful experience. Visitors can explore the many vineyards and wineries that offer guided tours and tastings. Most wineries in the area produce the famous Torrontés wine, a white wine that is unique to Argentina and is considered the country's flagship grape variety. The Torrontés wine is characterized by its floral and fruity aroma, crisp acidity, and refreshing taste, making it an excellent choice to enjoy on a hot summer day.

Aside from the delicious wine, Cafayate also boasts breathtaking scenery, with the vineyards nestled against the backdrop of the Andes mountains. Visitors can sip their wine while admiring the views of the vineyards and mountains or relax in one of the town's many outdoor cafes or restaurants.

In conclusion, drinking wine in Cafayate is a memorable experience that combines delicious wine with stunning natural beauty. Whether you are a wine lover or just looking for a unique experience, a visit to Cafayate should be on your travel bucket list.

Escape to SALINAS GRANDES: A Must-See Destination in Argentina

I've been dreaming of seeing the north of Argentina for years, and I finally made it. First stop, to the Salinas Grandes, on the Jujuy side. I was blown away. These Salt Flats are amazing.

Salinas Grandes, located in the northwestern region of Argentina, is a vast salt flat spanning over 12,000 hectares. The salt flat's white expanse offers a stunning otherworldly landscape, with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and sky. Visitors can explore the salt flats on foot, with guided tours available to learn about the salt extraction process and the region's history. The best time to visit Salinas Grandes is during the dry season, from May to September, when the salt flats' surface is at its driest and most impressive. A visit to Salinas Grandes is a unique and unforgettable experience for anyone visiting Argentina.

ARGENTINA: EXPLORING JUJUY - PURMAMARCA TO HUMAHUACA - TRIP & ITINERARY

JUJUY || PURMAMARCA || HILL OF SEVEN COLORS (Cerro de los Siete Colores) || MAIMARÁ || PAINTER'S PALETTE || HUMAHUACA || SERRANÍA DE HORNOCAL

After our journey from Salta, we spent the night in Purmamarca and decided to climb the mountain early morning to see the town from above, and witness the beautiful Hill of Seven Colors. It was so worth the climb!... It was magnificent! Little did we know, it was only the beginning...

As we traveled further north towards Humahuaca, we stopped at a little town called Maimara where the backdrop of a mountain called the Painter's Palette looked... like a painters pallet! The colours were numerous, vivid and beautiful.. OMG! we thought, this was even better than the last one!

It can't get any better than this, we thought...

But wait! Our jaw literary dropped as we drove closer and got a glimpse of el Hornocal. Is this real!?? Seriously, the most spectacular view we have ever seen! The multicolored mountains in Jujuy took our breath away...

Don't forget to watch our last vlog; On The Road From Salta to Jujuy where we had the best empanadas, and explored San Antonio and Salinas Grandes in Jujuy:

Road Trip Around Northwestern Argentina (Part 2) - Wine in Cafayate

This is a continuation of our multiple-part series from our epic 8 day road trip around the Salta region of Northwestern Argentina. In this episode we don't do too much road tripping as we're actually spending a few days in Cafayate, but it's probably best that we didn't drive very much because there was a lot of wine drinking going on!
