Augustus did not like Tiberius and only after a long series of mournings he opted for the adopted son of his wife Livia, she had had him from her first marriage.
Tiberius was a first-order man, for merit and lineage. He belonged to a great Roman family, the gens Claudia, whose history was intertwined with the history of the Republic; he had been a valiant soldier, who did not just command but fought in the field alongside his soldiers, an experienced general, the architect of brilliant military campaigns in very difficult territories, in Germania, in Pannonia, in Dalmatia.
Tiberius had also shown that he could put the obedience to his prince before his dearest feelings: Augustus had forced him to repudiate his wife Vipsania, whom he loved so much and who was also pregnant, to marry Augustus' daughter, the unscrupulous and corrupt Giulia, a very unfortunate and sad marriage. He was a free, proud and severe man, a little sad.
Some years before the Senate, upon Augustus’ recommendation, had given him the powers that allowed him to rule the Roman world, the “tribunicia potestas” and the “imperium”, and Octavian had adopted him. So Tiberius had taken the name of Tiberius Julius Caesar Augustus.
