Are we about to be Attacked by PIRATES? | S04E01

We’ve known for a long time that the most dangerous waters for piracy in the Caribbean are through the Nicaraguan banks. Every year we hear accounts of yachts being attacked and boarded by pirates in this area.

How can we know that piracy is a real threat in this region but still make the decision to sail through these dangerous waters? In this episode, in order to get to Panama before crossing the Pacific, we are forced to sail through the Nicaraguan banks and have some terrifying moments of our own.

PIRATES! Are we about to get ATTACKED? | Sailing Indonesia, Ep 149

At 3 in the morning whilst at sea a vessel charges at us... Pirates? What do you do?

In this episode of Sailing Nandji, we are faced with every sailors worst nightmare. We are under sail on passage miles off the coast when a vessel charges straight at us. We gybe, change course and the vessel does the same thing and continually charges straight at us... What do you do? Pirates?

We have been sailing in Indonesian waters for the past 5 months and have now over the last 2 years sailed all the way through the Indonesian islands from East to West. We have not feared pirate attack, but should we have?

At the end of the last episode whilst happily sailing at 4 knots a boat charges at us and puts us under their spot light. What do we do? Lets discuss this situation and we would love to hear what you would do if in the same situation...

With no sailing experience, we bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing to the Pacific! We have since cruised through New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon islands, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and then onto the boat yard in Malaysia to prepare for the years to come. With a new engine, we continued onto Thailand, then back down into Indonesia and specifically West Sumatra where we are living the island life and chasing the surf. With our Sailing plans changing, we are returning to Thailand in the coming months and then taking the northern route of the Indian Ocean to the Andaman islands and onto Sri Lanka before heading south to Chagos and across the Indian Ocean once cyclone season has finished and the trades begin again! The adventure is just beginning!

We departed the east coast of Australia in July 2017 and have since sailed over 10000nm. We have explored some amazing countries and met some beautiful people along the way. We have experienced so many different and diverse cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of nowhere, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our lives doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades around the World!

PIRACY at Anchor... Are we in DANGER? S04E39

Even though it’s statistically unlikely to experience piracy at anchor or to be held up at gunpoint on our sailboat, crime against sailors is a reality and does happen to unlucky sailors all around the world. As we explore new places, how do we decide who to trust? How do we protect ourselves, and how do we deal with the underlying fear of knowing that we’re at the mercy of strangers? Could chasing this dream of sailing around the world actually become the biggest mistake of our lives?

Boarded at Sea! Are they PIRATES? We sail too close to the coast of Venezuela (EP 12)

On our way from Grenada to Curaçao, we decided it would be a fantastic idea to visit the Venezuelan islands of Los Aves. We were aware of that the country is in a state of economic collapse, leading to increase crime corruption and piracy, opening up a risk for sailors like us.

But surely no pirates would venture as far as these remote, seemingly insignificant islands? As we sailed past, we saw the unmistakable shape of a few small, open boats, and decided we'd better not stop. As the islands faded into the distance, and we felt like we had escaped, some obscure Spanish rang out on the VHF.

We looked behind us to see a small open boat, four men, and the unmistakable silhouette of an AK47.

ARRIVANO I PIRATI!

Living Through the WORST Case Scenario | EE 75

A fire on board is a disaster. Having a fire on board where you also catch on fire is a worst nightmare. This is exactly what happened to our friends on SV Naida. Dre literally caught on fire and jumped in the ocean to put himself out. Aiyana's quick thinking saved the boat and now they are on the long road to recovery and repair.

Pirates, piracy, weapons & guns! Sailing Q&A 1

How do you defend against pirates? And what weapons do we carry, if any? Is it OK to have guns on board? Piracy is one of the top subjects we get asked about.

In this clip we discuss piracy and our experience of it, and offer some advice on how to limit the risks. We also talk about weapons and whether you should arm yourself when sailing in high risk areas.

A couple of notes on the clip: Jamie refers to a boat in the Andaman Sea, but he meant the Arabian Sea (between Oman and India); and Liz said we hugged the east coast of the Red Sea when she meant the west coast. Other than that, this Q&A session has a number of pointers that may help other yachties who are worried about piracy on the high seas. Please do leave your comments and questions below and we'll do our best to answer them. Enjoy!

Porto Azzurro, Elba Island, characteristic fishing port, thanks for a like and subscribe

A fishing village of ancient origins, Porto Azzurro owes its name to a choice made in 1947 by the municipal administration which decided to give the town a more touristy name. In fact, it was once called Portolongone, a name given to it in 1603 by Philip III of Spain who intended to make it a sort of fortification to defend the territory.
Focal center of the city and its worldliness, Piazza Matteotti is one of the largest and most beautiful squares on the island.

Walking through the narrow alleys and intricate streets of the historic center, you are immediately attracted by majestic buildings, testimony to the ancient past of the village. Among the most famous, we must first mention Fort San Giacomo, an imposing fortification whose construction was commissioned by Philip III in 1602. The building was erected to fortify the protective network of the territory as studied by Don Garcia of Toledo, on the model existing in the city of Antwerp, to cope with the continuous attacks of Saracen pirates; the fort in fact had an important function of sighting and protection, a task which it maintained until the early nineteenth century, when it was decommissioned and transformed into a prison.

If the fort catches the attention thanks to its majesty, the religious buildings attract with their grace; among the most interesting of Porto Azzurro we must remember the Church of the Madonna del Carmine and the Church of San Giacomo Maggiore.

Not far from Porto Azzurro, built on a rock spur reachable on foot, is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Monserrato, built in 1606 at the behest of the Spanish governor Pons Y Leòn who wanted to reproduce on Elba the famous sanctuary built near Barcelona .

The most comfortable beach closest to the center of Porto Azzurro is La Pianotta, characterized by a crystal clear sea, fine gravel and large rocks. Not far away are the beaches of Barbarossa, Reale and the very particular Terranera.

From Porto Azzurro it is also possible to go on a boat excursion, visiting hidden coves and snorkeling and diving in the magnificent seabed of the island.

In summer the town offers long and fun nights of entertainment and many events and events organized to make the evenings even more pleasant.

Piracy is an act of robbery or criminal violence by ship or boat-borne attackers upon another ship or a coastal area, typically with the goal of stealing cargo and other valuable items or properties. Those who conduct acts of piracy are called pirates, while the dedicated ships that pirates use are called pirate ships.( )
