Dutch People And Their CRAZY EXPRESSIONS

Dutch expressions have been one of my favorite parts of Dutch culture to learn about. I've seen that they have expressions for literally everything. So join me at the kerstmarkt (Christmas market) in Haarlem, where I go around and ask Dutch people what's their favorite Dutch expression.

Dutch People & Freedom | Nationale Herdenking & Bevrijdingsdag

Dodenherdenking (Remembrance Day) and Bevrijdingsdag (Liberation Day) are two very important days in the Netherlands with a huge focus on acknowledging and celebrating the freedom in the country. In today's video I wanted to dive into that and understand how Dutch people feel about their vrijheid (freedom) while also having a conversation with my Oma who lived in the Netherlands when freedom wasn't a thing.

Anthropology of the Dutch: The people from Tuindorp

The pigeonhole man studies life in Tuindorp Oostzaan, a private community in Amsterdam North. Once this community was conceived and built as a walhalla among the metropolitan labor areas; 'fruit of struggle and ideals' made by down to the core socialists, 'that made possible what was not possible'. Here there were no ruins but human dignified houses with a large garden in an ordered village, where the worker could live happily. The people from Tuindorp ate there, slept there, worked hard work in shipbuilding there. But times changed; the shipyards went bankrupt. The workers became more self-directed, poverty and facilities disappeared from the district. Slowly the village was swallowed up by the big city. Still, the village remains pleasant in an old school way and its inhabitants are still looking out for each other. But now come the invaders: the yuppies, that do not say hello and do not adhere to the unwritten rules.
Original title: De Hokjesman - De Tuindorpers
Fascinated by the prevailing pigeonhole spirit, the pigeonhole man goes on field research into the world of appealing Dutch subcultures. With a wink to the classical ethnologist, dressed in a three-piece suit with a bow tie, he analyzes the man as one of the animal groups.

It's easy to think of India's capital New Delhi as a massive concrete jungle. Most foreigners impressions of the city is that it's chaotic and dirty. Plenty of those areas do exist in Delhi but there's also plenty of nice, clean and peaceful areas.
Haus Khas Social was a complete culture shock. It was almost the opposite what we had been experiencing the first few days in India. Modern... neon... cocktails... and hip hop!
Hauz Khas is famous for it's Momos and quirky hipster nightlife...

What the Dutch call home - The Netherlands from above

We are no longer as sedentary as before, but where do we find our safe nest? In the past it was clear: where you were born there lied your future. This sedentary life is still celebrated in some regions and villages, but more and more we spread our wings during our lives. We used to let ourselves be guided by our birthplace, today we are looking for like-minded people. In golf resorts, residents hit the little balls together with other residents in their backyard. But our blood doesn’t lie and our roots call us eventually back. The regional football club also has the desire for its own nest. 'Us Against The Rest of the World' appears to be a basic need that constantly takes on new shapes.

The Netherlands from above shows us a country from a spectacular perspective. From the sky it is possible to see how the Netherlands changes through the seasons, and how in parallel they form the determining moments of our own life cycle. Through data visuals, impressive aerial images and portraits of people on the ground, the second series of the Netherlands from above outlines an image of how time has changed our country and how we move in it. The way we live from day to day, and from generation to generation in this country reflects our resilient mentality. The Netherlands from above season 2 tells us the story of seeing and taking opportunities, falling and rising up again, reinventing the wheel again and again. Where the first series was an ode to the makeable Netherlands, this second series is an ode to our resilience.

World's Largest Gathering of GINGERS (WTF?!)

???? My Top Travel Rewards Credit Cards:
✅ SUBSCRIBE for More Travel Videos:

As a proud ginger, I was THRILLED to attend the world's largest ginger festival/gathering a few months ago! It was the 12th consecutive year of Ginger Fest, held in a small town in Southern Netherlands called Tilburg. And what a blast it was!

More than 1,000 gingers, from all over the globe, came in for a weekend of music, activities, picnics, bar crawls and just old-fashioned FUN.

But I must admit.. it was pretty strange to spend 2 days exclusively with other members of the ginger community. Why? Because we have nothing else in common other than our unique genetic mutations. Most festivals/gatherings around the world are centered around a common INTEREST, such as music, sports, arts, etc -- but this one? It's just a bunch of redheads taking over a small Dutch town!

That being said, I will say that it was a fun time, and I made several new redhead friends who took me around UTRECHT (my new favorite city in Europe). It's a mini-Amsterdam, without all the tourists - as you'll find out in this story!

Thanks for watching and stay tuned for next week, when I visit the bizarre town called BAARLE which is literally stuck in between two countries: Netherlands and Belgium.

Anthropology of the Dutch: nobility in The Netherlands

The nobility, in their own words, represents decency and quality. Noblesse oblige, education, language, and good manners are the ingredients to become a decent and noble human being and are the basis of the education at home. Who is not of nobility, but eagerly shows the appearance by imitating and copying the adventures of the nobility is called a snob. Michael Schaap is such a snob: He has learned the right etiquette rules, language and wisdom from his great grandmother as a child and moves apparently effortlessly between people of all positions.

The travelers community - Anthropology of the Dutch

Piet van Assendorp (46) is chairman of the Association for the Preservation of Caravan in the Netherlands and can be seen in the Anthropology of the Dutch apisode about the Travelers. Piet has been a fan of the program for years and he helped the pigeonhole man to gain access to different people and places in the travelers community.

De Hokjesman about this episode

'Almost all TV programs about the caravan culture come with the same clichés: shoes off in the car and folk music. We do not talk about that. We have the expensive duty to - with all the nuance - also appoint the hot issues. After all, it is something that people are prepared to fight for: the freedom to do the things you want to do. And yes, that does not always happen within the lines of the law. Last season we knocked in vain at the travelers' doors: we had put our most intellectual editor on it, and then it's from VPRO after all? Get lost! But now I went to the camp with a female colleague; we both look like kind of gypsies, and that worked. In no time we were in somewhere and we got pea soup and a thousand stories.'

Life in the Netherlands, from the unthinkable to normal!

Life in the Netherlands, from the unthinkable to normal! When we moved to the Netherlands from the US, we knew there were going to be some changes...and there were. Some were very easy to adjust to, and some ...well not so easy. For us, moving to Europe has never been more satisfying and living in the Netherlands has been a dream come true and we wouldn't change a thing. But living in Holland takes some getting used to...everything from biking, food, the holidays and even the people can be a bit hard to get to know. As expats living in Europe, it took some time for things to become normal.
