Arctic Glacier collapses . Too close for comfort

We almost DIED in Spencer Glacier calving - Alaska 2019

My buddy Josh (@steeringsouth) and I rode the Alaska Railroad out to Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop and tent camped over night at Spencer Glacier. We went kayaking in the glacier bay in our Intex K2 Explorer kayaks and witnessed a MASSIVE event as a chunk of a glacier calved about 50 foot from us and created a 10-12 foot wave. We were pelted with chunks of flying ice and buckets of water. To say we are lucky to be alive is an understatement. It was an absolutely stunning phenomenon to witness (and survive) . We learned our lesson and will give glaciers the space they deserve next time we are out exploring. Footage captured using GoPro Hero 7 Black.

Massive Glacier Calving - Kayaking too Close for Comfort

This is why you don't want to get too close to a Glacier while in a boat and especially while kayaking. Glacier Calving in the Glacier Bay National Park happens very often and is dangerous. Glacier Calving of this size causes massive waves.

Enormous Glacier Calvings montage

A three minute montage of some large glacier calvings I've managed to film over the past few years whilst on various assignments in the high arctic. All of these glaciers are in Svalbard and Alaska.

Calving is absolutely a natural glacial occurrence, what is unnatural now is that rate at which it is happening and this is well documented. Our glaciers are melting at an unprecedented rate. Recently I returned to a location in Svalbard where I had not been for five years. The glacier had retreated so many miles that the glacier was now three smaller glaciers and entire bay was unrecognisable compared to my previous visit.

Glacier Explodes on Kayakers! | Spencer Glacier Calving Alaska | Almost Died

A friend and I took a trip to Spencer Glacier for a one night camping and kayaking adventure. After setting up camp we hit the glacial lake for some awesome kayaking. We made the 1.5 mile trek to the glacier and started hearing calving in the distance. We decided to investigate the noises and came face to face with one of nature's most awesome forces. It was the most intense thing I have ever experienced. We know we were way too close, and that we are lucky we didn't get hurt.

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. Calving of glaciers is often accompanied by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 60 metres (200 ft) high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are not often observed.

Iceberg tsunami gone wild!

A tourist from Australia came to my uncle and asked if she could get a ride to the glacier just north of Ilulissat, Greenland, so he asked me if I wanted to be his translator. I am from another town where glaciers are fairytales, I was as much of a tourist as the Australian tourist, so I decided to join the crew.

The beautiful scenery was amazing, but the nature doesn't care about anyone. That day almost became our last day.

Glacier calving & breakoff in photostills

A calving glacier caught in photostills. It's not the biggest but it gives a good indication. Glaciers calve for several reasons but mostly it has to do with pressure: if the ice at the back pushes too hard, the front will break off. These pictures were taken in 14th Juli-Bukta in Krossfjorden on the island of Spitsbergen (Svalbard) in the Arctic.

Iceberg Collapse in the Denmark Strait

Icebergs floating out at sea during the Arctic summer are subject to waves, winds and rising temperatures, causing them to collapse, crumble, explode and flip over unexpectedly. This huge iceberg was spotted by MV Sea Spirit, an expedition vessel chartered by Poseidon Expeditions (a polar cruise operator) in the Denmark Strait between Iceland and Greenland, and its demise was captured by expedition photographer Lauren Farmer.
