The castle towering over the ‘Garden of France’ | FULL DOCUMENTARY

French Palaces immerses us in the universe of some historical figures such as Francis I, Leonardo da Vinci and Catherine de Medici, but also introduces us to those who continue to keep France’s great chateaus alive today.

Historians, curators, caretakers, landscape gardeners, artists and researchers have made these mediaeval gems their daily work and their passion. They guide us behind the scenes of these magical places to discover paintings, multicoloured garden mosaics and priceless furniture.

Nowadays, an extensive cultural program is played out against the backdrop of these mythical chateaus. Contemporary art installations, exhibitions by great photographers, concerts, ephemeral garden displays: all the ingredients are combined to preserve this world cultural heritage.

Journey Through China's Cities - Urban Travel Documentary

Get Surfshark VPN at - Enter promo code HOFFER for 83% off and get 3 extra months for free!

China is one of the world’s most fascinating and complicated countries, and its cities seem to get bigger every year. Considered a rural society just a few decades ago, China today is home to the world’s largest urban population.

In this travel documentary, I take you on a journey through some of the country’s most interesting cities. While many city centers are filled with modern skyscrapers, we also search for more traditional neighborhoods, historic sites, tranquil parks, special events, and cultural activities. We look at the rapid changes China is undergoing in its urbanization process, and mention some of the challenges the country is facing.

From the modern megacities of Shenzhen and Guangzhou we travel to the ancient centers of Beijing and Xian. We visit the popular Summer holiday beaches of coastal Qingdao, and the exciting Winter festivals of Harbin. From the streets of fusion cities like Hong Kong and Macau we continue our journey to Tibetan Lhasa, located on the Rooftop of the World. We also take a look at the disappearing alleys of old Kashgar, in the controversial Xinjiang region, and the empty streets of Ordos, China’s best known ghost town. And we explore the expanding urban centers along the Yangtze river, including Wuhan and Chongqing, all the way to the fast paced metropolis of Shanghai.

I traveled through China independently for more than a decade, on several occasions. The footage in this video was shot between 2010 and 2019, and is accompanied by background information. For more in-depth information on each place, I recommend to read, watch, and listen to as many different sources as you can.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We begin our journey in Shanghai, one of China’s most remarkable cities. Its skyline has become a symbol for the country’s economic growth. While we look at the modern face of Shanghai, I also visit some more traditional neighborhoods, even though they are disappearing fast.

We travel onwards to Harbin, in the North of China, to visit a spectacular Winter festival, with sculptures and palaces made from ice and snow, which draws millions of tourists every year. Beijing, the nation’s capital, is our next destination. This is the political heart of China, but also brims with culture and creativity.

In Chongqing, located on the mighty Yangtze river, we witness some of the urbanization process, while in Lhasa we look at the traditions and customs of the Tibetan people. We travel onwards to Xian, where we walk on the ancient city walls, eat some delicious food in the Muslim neighborhood, and visit the magnificent Terracotta Army.

After Xian, we travel to Ordos, China’s best known ‘ghost town’. After which we continue our way to Kashgar, in the now controversial Xinjiang region, where the faith of the Uyghur people hangs in the balance. Qingdao is our next destination, one of China’s most beautiful coastal cities, where we also explore some of the suburbs.

Hong Kong is perhaps the perfect mix between East and West. A short ferry ride away, Macau retains some of its Portuguese history, but is also known as the ‘Las Vegas of Asia’ with its many casinos. Just across the ‘border’ from both, Shenzhen has grown into one of China’s largest and wealthiest cities, while it was just a small fishing village 40 years ago.

The last two cities we visit are Wuhan and Guangzhou, which have their own distinct character. I visited Wuhan before the pandemic broke out, and found a sprawling city. Guangzhou is also a vast metropolis, and is known for its Cantonese culture and cuisine.

TEDxUF - Jill Heinerth - Challenging the Unknown

JILL HEINERTH has traveled the world exploring underwater caves on projects that were branded impossible. She sees her work as a giant puzzle and loves the challenge of finding the tools and knowledge that allow her to unravel the last finite frontiers of this Earth. Jill will share her thoughts about risk management, technology and synergism as she recounts her exploration inside of Antarctic icebergs, and making movies deep inside submerged caves around the world.

Egypt Vacation Travel Video Guide • Great Destinations

Egypt is the land of pharaos, pyramids, mummies and other archeological riddles. The Giza pyramid is the last remaining ancient Wonder of the World, that still stirs up people's imagination. Hatshepsut's temple built into a cliff, the Saqqara burial grounds, The Valley of the Kings, the monumental forest of pillars of the Karnak temple, the monuments of Theba, Memphis and Luxor enchant the visitors. The past and the present meet in the capital of the country, Cairo. The museums, mosques, parks of the huge metropolis offer many sights, as well as the bazaars, where we can admire the mastery of the craftsmen from close range. We can travel all the biblical sceneriess of the Sinai Peninsula, and as a rest, we can have a boat voyage along the world's longest river - the Nile, take a holiday in one of the luxury resorts of Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh, or practise diving among the coral reefs of the Red Sea.

Narratives of Soil Forum - unknown fields

A vegan and passionate animal rights activist, Erez Nevi Pana’s practice is based on investigating natural phenomena and environmental processes through material exploration.

About Narratives of Soil Forum

The process of working with soil is a humbling one and a time in which all involved learn more about their landscape. The material narrates, buildings and objects that use soil take on its meaning, promoting a language of indignity. In this forum, we are interested in exploring the vocabulary of soil through the eyes of ancient and emerging practitioners. Join us on the 1st April to take part in this collective review spanning the globe. Through comparative study we will get to see what soil can reveal to us, contextualising our landscape in relation to what it has been through. In a time when climate change is affecting the entire planet, global connections using familiar materials are important when exploring solutions.

Chinese Qipao

Shanghai socialites in the 1920’s and 30’s made the body hugging qipao and cheongsam dresses famous. Today, they are still a part of Chinese fashion houses who combine both tradition and contemporary artistry in their couture and casual designs.

Colleen Quen, a couturier and artist living in San Francisco, and fashion designer Arkadiy Polezhaev from San Jose, California travel to Shanghai, China to discover how this fashion staple is more than just a dress. From the traditional bridal qipao with exquisite embroidery and buttons to modern casual designs, they discover the history, culture and story behind each piece and how they’re made.

Along the way they visit the historical Paramount ballroom, eat at the infamous Canton Table and discover the metamorphosis of the silkworm. They meet designers who utilize modern technology in their bold designs to those who collect historical robes that influence their design process.

What designer gave up her BMW X5 in order to obtain a 250 year old treasure? Discover this and more as the qipao journey begins.

Interview with Professor Ian Rotherham - Rewilding

Professor Ian Rotherham is an expert on a range of environmental issues, including urban wildlife, extreme weather, flooding and climate change. He has published extensively in academic journals, and has released a number of books on UK wildlife and the environment. Ian is a man positively bursting with enthusiasm and knowledge and ideas.

Ian poured forth a cheerful stream of lessons on the environment, eco-tourism and rewilding. We talked about the cultural severance between cities and wildness, and the reassuring dictum that you can change the world, a little bit at a time: perhaps by beginning with rewilding your back garden.

Ecotourism should not only be “take only photographs, leave only footprints”, but we also need to try to help people in a benign way.
Adventure literature is often about “defeating nature” rather than pausing for a while or caring for the landscape.
We need more respect and awareness when dealing with the vulnerable resource of the natural world.
How best to minimise your damage and maximise your positive impact
Rewilding, in all its guises, (including rewilding the mind) can save the NHS millions, as well as all the other benefits.

The communities that are able to protest about their environment are usually the most affluent ones.
Trees give you a sense of place and seasonality. They are therapeutic and spiritually uplifting.
The new urban wild and bringing wild to the people
Cultural severance in urban landscapes – a broken connection between cities and wildness
Feral – George Monbiot
Shadow woods – Ian Rotherham
You can change the world, even incrementally and a bit at a time. Rewilding your garden is a good start.
Globally and in Britain, in terms of nature conservation, biodiversity and sustainability we are indeed in a very bad way – essentially the ecosystem is broken and we need to mend it
The problems are not as simple as carbon = climate change = plant lots of trees! Such naïve thinking is actually dangerously misconceived
Rewilding offers a radical new approach to resolving many of the issues in ways which are, paraphrased from Lawton (2010), bigger, bolder, better, more joined …..However, this idea needs to connect with a far wider community especially in urban areas
Additionally, approaches have to be paid for and not just with ‘ecosystem services which are community goods’ – but with MONEY ….. (This is a fact not popular with politicians for example!)
I suggest that farmers & farming have to be part of the SOLUTION and are not, as often portrayed, the problem

Vive la France: The Art of Publicité -- The Belle Époque to WWI

Part one (of three) of our Vive la France: The Art of Publicité series.

From the iconic posters of the Paris World Exhibitions to the disturbing AI-based digital commercials for Louis Vuitton, the semiotic analysis of visual ads, commercials, and promotional campaigns will reach far beyond the mere art of selling goods and ideas in an ever-changing marketplace. It will throw light upon the French and their views on their history, values, and aspirations.
