This is a walk through of the ancient Mayan city of Tikal in Guatemala. It is one of the largest and best restored of the mayan ruins. The walk starts in the late afternoon from Temple 4 from which you can look back east over the rest of the city. However, the ruins are only 20percent restored so most of the city is still shrouded in jungle with a few temples sticking up out of the trees. Ironically, it is those trees that hold the stones of the unrestored city in place. It was a hot day in the jungle but we hear birds and see spider monkeys jumping from a tree onto one of the temples.
I hope you enjoy this version of the walk but please let me know which you prefer.

Tikal is an ancient Mayan citadel in the rainforests of northern Guatemala. Possibly dating to the 1st century A.D., Tikal flourished between 200 and 850 A.D. and was later abandoned. Its iconic ruins of temples and palaces include the giant, ceremonial Lost World (Mundo Perdido) Pyramid and the Temple of the Grand Jaguar. At 70 meters, Temple IV is the tallest pre-Columbian structure in the Americas.
Did you know: The dynastic line of Tikal, founded as early as the 1st century AD, spanned 800 years and included at least 33 rulers. wikipedia.org

Hi! We are Eric and Sarah, a couple of Canadians currently travelling around Central America. We’ve been married since 2017 but have known each other since we were only 6 years old! During our last year of university, we spent 4 months in Honduras on a semester abroad and fell in love with Latin America. Since then, we began planning and saving to do an extensive Latin America tour. 2020 delayed those plans by half a year but during this time stuck in BC, we explored a new hobby (like everyone in the pandemic) of videography and photography. We are now using our new skills to document our adventures around South and Central America. Our desire through these videos is to provide helpful and inspiring content for other travelers while also showing people around the world how beautiful Latin America truly is! Tikal in Tikal National Park, Guatemala

Tikal is the ruin of an ancient city, which was likely to have been called Yax Mutal, found in a rainforest in Guatemala. It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala. Situated in the department of El Petén, the site is part of Guatemala's Tikal National Park and in 1979 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Tikal was the capital of a conquest state that became one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient Maya. Though monumental architecture at the site dates back as far as the 4th century BCE, Tikal reached its apogee during the Classic Period, c. 200 to 900 CE. During this time, the city dominated much of the Maya region politically, economically, and militarily, while interacting with areas throughout Mesoamerica such as the great metropolis of Teotihuacan in the distant Valley of Mexico. There is evidence that Tikal was conquered by Teotihuacan in the 4th century CE. Following the end of the Late Classic Period, no new major monuments were built at Tikal and there is evidence that elite palaces were burned. These events were coupled with a gradual population decline, culminating with the site's abandonment by the end of the 10th century.

Tikal is the best understood of any of the large lowland Maya cities, with a long dynastic ruler list, the discovery of the tombs of many of the rulers on this list and the investigation of their monuments, temples and palaces.

The closest large modern settlements are Flores and Santa Elena, approximately 64 kilometres by road to the southwest. Tikal is approximately 303 kilometres north of Guatemala City. It is 19 kilometres south of the contemporary Maya city of Uaxactun and 30 kilometres northwest of Yaxha. The city was located 100 kilometres southeast of its great Classic Period rival, Calakmul, and 85 kilometres northwest of Calakmul's ally Caracol, now in Belize.

The city has been completely mapped and covered an area greater than 16 square kilometres that included about 3,000 structures. The topography of the site consists of a series of parallel limestone ridges rising above swampy lowlands. The major architecture of the site is clustered upon areas of higher ground and linked by raised causeways spanning the swamps. The area around Tikal has been declared as the Tikal National Park and the preserved area covers 570 square kilometres. It was created on 26 May 1955 under the auspices of the Instituto de Antropología e Historia and was the first protected area in Guatemala.

The ruins lie among the tropical rainforests of northern Guatemala that formed the cradle of lowland Maya civilization. The city itself was located among abundant fertile upland soils, and may have dominated a natural east–west trade route across the Yucatan Peninsula. Conspicuous trees at the Tikal park include gigantic kapok the sacred tree of the Maya; tropical cedar, and Honduras mahogany. Regarding the fauna, agoutis, white-nosed coatis, gray foxes, Geoffroy's spider monkeys, howler monkeys, harpy eagles, falcons, ocellated turkeys, guans, toucans, green parrots and leafcutter ants can be seen there regularly. Jaguars, ocelots, and cougars are also said to roam in the park.

Tikal had no water other than what was collected from rainwater and stored in ten reservoirs. Archaeologists working in Tikal during the 20th century refurbished one of these ancient reservoirs to store water for their own use. The average annual rainfall at Tikal is 1,945 millimetres. However, the arrival of rain was often unpredictable, and long period of drought could occur before the crops ripen, which severely threatened the inhabitants of the city.

Tikal has been partially restored by the University of Pennsylvania and the government of Guatemala. It was one of the largest of the Classic period Maya cities and was one of the largest cities in the Americas. The architecture of the ancient city is built from limestone and includes the remains of temples that tower over 70 metres high, large royal palaces, in addition to a number of smaller pyramids, palaces, residences, administrative buildings, platforms and inscribed stone monuments. There is even a building which seemed to have been a jail, originally with wooden bars across the windows and doors. There are also seven courts for playing the Mesoamerican ballgame, including a set of 3 in the Seven Temples Plaza, a unique feature in Mesoamerica.

The limestone used for construction was local and quarried on-site. The depressions formed by the extraction of stone for building were plastered to waterproof them and were used as reservoirs, together with some waterproofed natural depressions.

Guatemala: Tikal Temple 4 Sunrise Tour in 4K ancient Mayan Ruins in Jungle of Central America

Guatemala: Tikal Temple 4 Sunrise Tour in the ancient Mayan Ruins in the Jungle of Central America

Our last stop in Guatemala was the Unesco world heritage site and Mayan Ruins of Tikal which is a national park. Visiting Tikal for the sunrise tour can be tricky because you need to buy your tickets before at the main gate which does not open until later in the morning. If you don't buy them ahead of time, you will not be admitted. You can also buy them at various banks around the country ahead of time.
We got up and hurriedly walked about 20 minutes from the Tikal Inn which was one of two accommodations inside the park. Along the way we dodged harmless tarantulas using our headlamps and flashlights. We climbed the long stairs in the dark to the top of Temple IV which faces eastward and listened to the sounds of the jungle provided by a variety of birds and prehistoric sounding howler monkeys. The dawn can often be cloudy so be aware that you may not actually see the rising sun. After the sun had risen, we tromped back down the stairway and had a brief guided tour of the complex which included the Mundo Perdido and the accropolis with the jaguar temple and stellas. We headed back to the Tikal Inn which had a pool and restaurant for the rest of the afternoon to catch up on our sleep watch spider monkeys and birds as we rested for our trip to Belize the next day.

Tikal Guatemala - Ancient Mayan City & Star Wars Rebel Base | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Tikal, the impressive ancient town of one of the most powerful Mayan kingdoms!

Guatemala is known for being a region sprinkled with ancient town ruins, and Tikal is maybe one of the most fascinating ones. Today Tikal may be to Guatemala what the Great pyramids are to Egypt. Surrounded by rainforest, it is placed 300 kilometers north of Guatemala city.

It is one of the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. In 1979 it was also declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The researchers estimate that it was populated by around 10,000 to as high as 90,000 inhabitants.

There were many speculations about the origin and meaning of its name, but its precise meaning still remains obscure. It didn’t get the name Tikal until its discovery in the 1840s. Before that, it was called Yax Mutal. Researches translated it as “the waterhole” because Tikal used to be a reservoir for hunters and travelers in the region. Alternative suggestions for the meaning of its name are the place of the voices in the Itza Maya language and First Mutal because Mutul was the name of the kingdom itself.

Even though the name itself remains a mystery, Tikal is still one of the best understood Maya cities, because the tombs of many rulers were discovered and the investigation of their monuments, temples, and palaces helped explain its history.

Exploring Underground in the Tikal Ruins in Guatemala - The Adventure of a Lifetime

The adventure of a lifetime exploring the Tikal ruins in Guatemala. While walking down random trails, we stumbled upon some carved holes in the ground. With a heart of adventure, we went in to see what the underground ruin was and where it led! Spiders, tarantulas, scorpions, snakes... no matter! We pressed on despite the fear I have for spiders!

Tikal is a ruin city consisting of huge temples and many undiscovered ruins. The city of Tikal is one of the largest Mayan cities discovered. It is absolutely breath taking to go underground, above the trees and all around exploring this ancient civilization. It is amazing to see what ancient civilizations accomplished thousands of years ago!

Yaxha (or Yaxhá in Spanish orthography) is a Mesoamerican archaeological site in the northeast of the Petén Basin Region near the border to Belize and a former ceremonial centre and city of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Yaxha was the third largest city in the region and experienced its maximum power during the Early Classic period (c. AD 250--600).
The city was located on a ridge overlooking Lake Yaxha. The name of the city derives from the Mayan for blue-green water;

The Fotos were taken during a travel in 2012.

Visiting this old, mystic Maya city was amazing and it's greatness and stunning beauty touched us. We can definitely recommend visiting this place when you are in Guatemala. It's way less touristy then Tikal, your are surrounded by raw jungle and the sunset from the highest temple, overlooking the old city and the lake, is absolutely breathtaking.

We would recommend this trip to anyone, for questions please leave a comment or contact us by mail or Facebook!

Drone footage is filmed with our DJI Phantom 4 drone.

Tikal, the forgotten Maya City ????????

This was the third day from my 2017 trip to Guatemala. Tikal is an ancient Mayan city hidden in the jungles of Central America. I caught a dawn bus from Hostel Amigos in Flores and headed to Tikal. Got to explore the wildlife, the majestic Mayan ruins and temples of Tikal National Park all day. It was paradise for a history-nerd. :)
