Ancient Jewelry - Renewed

A Collaborative Project Between Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem and the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design, Inspired by the Exhibition PURE GOLD.

In the framework of their second year, jewelry design students at Shenkar College produced replicas of jewelry created before the 14th century CE. They were required to identify and study the techniques used to make the original, and create the tools with which they created these replicas . The aim of the project was not only to understand how to translate the visual aspect through technical processes and material; but to help enhance and develop the students' perspective as a jeweler and designer.
The Bible Lands Museum Jerusalem enabled the students to study, research, measure and fall in love with pieces from the exhibition PURE GOLD.

On display at the BLMJ through March 31st

Materials Used in Ancient Egyptian Jewelry

The video titled Materials Used in Ancient Egyptian Jewelry explores the raw materials and gemstones used by the Pharaohs to create their beautiful jewelry pieces. The Pharaohs favored gold, as its golden color symbolized the goddess Amun and the incandescent sun, while silver was used less frequently. In addition to gold and silver, copper was also used in their jewelry. The video highlights various gemstones that were used, such as emeralds, malachite, garnet, turquoise, carnelian, obsidian, and amethyst. Polychrome glass was also used to create colorful jewelry and beads. The ancient Egyptians believed in immortality and viewed death as a temporary interruption, so they packed the belongings of the deceased and all they might need in their afterlife. The Pharaohs' jewelry pieces still exist in museums worldwide, showcasing the beauty and craftsmanship of ancient Egyptian jewelry-making techniques.

Ancient Egyptian Necklace

Ancient Egyptian Necklace The ancient Egyptians adored jewellery and loved to wear a variety of necklaces and collars made from a huge range of materials.

Of course, only the wealthy could afford gold, silver or precious stones, but shells, wood and bone were more readily avaliable to those on a more restricted budget.

Wealthy Egyptians could afford to buy beautifully crafted pieces of jewellery, but even those who could not afford the works of lesser craftsmen could employ their own ingenuity to make lovely pieces with which to adorn themselves.

In art the upper classes and the gods are almost always shown wearing a significant quantity of jewellery as a mark of their status.

This particularly relates to collars and necklaces made from precious metals as these pieces of jewellery were often given as gifts by pharaoh to loyal supporters, making them a great source of personal pride.

In biographies inscribed on the walls of their tombs, successful Egyptians are not slow to boast of every ocassion that their king rewarded their actions with a gift of a gold necklace!

Silver Legacies: The Making of Croatian Filigree Jewelry

The fiery birth of a pair of silver filigree earrings and the process of how to make jewelry by hand using traditional techniques is profiled in this episode of Destinations with Shawn & Tricia.

Embedded in the 1,700-year-old walls of Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia, this small jewelry store is still using a traditional jewelry-making technique passed down for generations. Viktor and Flora Čivljak, the owners of Filigran Split, were kind enough to allow Tricia and me to chronicle the making of a pair of silver filigree earrings over the course of 4 hours. Needless to say, it was a true pleasure to watch a master craftsman at work.

Filigree, the Ancient Art of Zanjan

Filigree is one the most important applied arts of province of Zanjan. Filigree is a kind of metalwork, and researchers have traced it back to 550 to 330 B.C. Many filigree artifacts have been discovered in Susa, Dura-Europos, Hamedan and Jeyhoun treasure which prove that this craft was practiced from ancient times. Very few historic records exist about filigree of Zanjan, however explorers who have visited there have mentioned beautiful filigree handicrafts and jewels. Based on these records, 16th century is the first recorded history for filigree. Today most filigree products are of sliver, which is obtained by melting silver objects that are old and obsolete. Some of other components that are used include natural wax, aqua regia, alum and sulfuric acid. The tools used in filigree making are very similar to those of goldsmithing. The first step of filigree making is to pass stocks of silver, gold or copper through rolling machine to turn them into thin threads with thickness of about 1-2 millimeters. Then 2 to 3 threads are woven together to create chains, or passed through a roll that gives them grind edges. The mold of the desired shape is then made by putting thick strips of metal around a cast iron or iron base. Then the iron base is heated and a layer of wax is applied on it. The wax is used to hold the small pieces of thin threads together.
