We were based in the capital city Chișinău during our entire trip and were able to make day trips to all of the wine regions. Besides the official language Moldovan/Romanian, French and Russian are also spoken by some people in Moldova. So how are the food, wine, and people of Moldova like? What is it like to do wine tourism in Moldova? Watch this video to find out.

Moldova Annual Wine Festival - Chisinau, Moldova

David’s Been Here is in Moldova touring the country’s world-famous Annual Wine Festival. Taking place on the first weekend in October, wineries from all over the country come together in Chisinau to present their newest wine selections to both domestic and international tourists. With dancing, music, lots of food and spectacular cultural performances going on, this annual wine festival is one of the most memorable events of the year in Moldova. Watch along as David walks us around the 12th Annual Moldova Wine Festival (October 5, 2013), displaying all the sounds, sights and attractions along the way.

Didn’t know Moldova was such a big wine destination? The country has actually been home to vineyards since 3000 BC, with traces of grape vines dating back to the Thracians in 7000 BC. Throughout its history, Moldova has been producing wine for itself and surrounding European countries, with over 147,000 hectares of land cultivated for the production. If you love wine tours, wine tastings and everything about viticulture, this annual Wine Festival is a must visit. The best thing about Moldova’s wine festival is, of course, the wine… but the cultural performances, delicious food stations, music, dancing and overall buzz of Chisinau makes it an unforgettable experience. If you’re planning a trip to Moldova during the beginning of Autumn, make sure you coincide your trip with Chisinau and the country’s Wine Festival!

In this episode, David takes us along on his tour of one of Moldova’s top attractions: the biggest wine cellar in the world, Milestii Mici. It actually holds the Guinness World Record for containing the largest wine collection and having the biggest cellar of any other winery in the world!

Here, David takes us through the extensive network of tunnels, wine collection, and tasting room at Milestii Mici.

There are over 200 kilometers of underground tunnels where the wine is stores. Each tunnel passage, or “street” is named after a different type of wine. David’s guide Natalia explains that the wine collection holds over 1.5 million bottles of wine!

Milestii Mici was founded in 1969 to store, preserve and mature high-quality wines. The cellars are comprised of 70% red, 20% white and 10% dessert wines.

Once the tour of the property is wrapped up, it’s time for the good stuff – to taste the wines. David suggests booking a tasting lunch in advance to taste the wines with some typical Moldovan food and live folk music.

Milestii Mici is located only 30 minutes south of Chisinau, which makes it a great day trip option from the capital.

When in Moldova, a visit to Milestii Mici is a must!

Cricova Vineyard from Moldova

“Cricova”, rightfully referred to as the ‘Pearl of Moldovan Winemaking’, is a unique underground complex that got renowned throughout the world for both its huge labyrinths and its excellent wines.

“Cricova” is the first Moldovan company that manufactures sparkling wine by the method of the famous monk Dom Pierre Perignon – “Méthode Traditionelle”, i.e. secondary fermentation in the glass and subsequent cuvée ageing. The company’s range of products is outstanding in terms of both quality and diversity. Today, one can state with certainty that one of the most remarkable products offered by the Cricova Associated Wine Factory is the classic sparkling wine – a noble and extravagant sparkling wine.

Furthermore, “Cricova” manufactures sparkling wines obtained by secondary fermentation in stainless steel reservoirs, and the resulting sparkling wine possesses a full fruity taste and freshness. This method enables the preservation of all qualities of a re-fermented wine.

The “Cricova” Associated Wine Factory has asserted itself due to its continuous innovation trend. The company applies the world’s most sophisticated technologies in winemaking, possesses the art of manufacturing diverse wines and meets the finest tastes and requirements of the market. “Cricova” is the most valuable brand in Moldova, renowned far beyond its borders. It is the first and only company awarded the highest state distinction, the Order of the Republic. By virtue of the Law of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, the “Cricova” Associated Wine Factory has been declared the National Cultural Heritage.

Travel Guide to Ukraine and Moldova

Quintessentially European, but refreshingly unsullied by the onslaught of mass tourism, Ukraine and Moldova provide us with two of the continent’s surprisingly little-known gems.

Ukraine, with its blue lakes and green hills can boast no fewer than seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites including the historic centre of Lviv, the wooden Tserkvas of the Carpathians and the cathedrals and monastic architecture of Kiev. The second largest country on the European continent, it was the birthplace of Russian Orthodoxy and has lain at the heart of the social changes that have beset this region for centuries. With a cultural pedigree that can trace its origins back to Byzantium and the Renaissance, its traditions and food span eons of influences that are just waiting to be discovered.

Sandwiched between Romania and Ukraine, Moldova is blessed with a climate that encourages year round tourism. Not an obvious destination for most tour operators, it is nonetheless blessed with some stunningly unspoiled charms. Its pride lies in its natural landscapes including Pădurea Domnească (the Royal Forest) and The Lower Prut (Prutul de Jos), but within this little slice of heaven you can also find ancient monasteries and historic forts, wineries that can justifiably hold their own with their French counterparts.

Drink Wine in Moldova - the Cricova Winery

Did you know some of the largest wine cellars in the world are in Moldova?

Cricova is only the second largest in the world, with over 120km of underground tunnels that were converted into wine cellars in the 1950s. Around half of them are used for storing wine. A visit here is one of the must-dos on a trip to Chisinau, the capital of Moldova.

If taking a road-train tour of the tunnels wasn't fun enough, the themed tasting rooms add to the experience.
