An Island made from plastic bottles by Richart Sowa

A floating artificial island built in Mexico by British artist Richart Rishi Sowa. He's first Island was destroyed by a hurricane in 2005; a replacement, Joyxee Island, has been open for tours since 2008.
In the waters of Isla Mujeres, the Island of Women, near Cancun. It opened for tours in August, 2008.
The new island was initially 20 metres (66 ft) in diameter, which has since expanded to 25 metres (82 ft), and plants and mangroves are already growing on it. It contains about 100,000 bottles. The new island has three beaches, a house, two ponds, a solar-powered waterfall and river, a wave-powered washing machine and solar panels. Volunteers helped with the project. Sowa will continue to make improvements to the Island, so it will always be a work of art in progress.

ABIDJAN IVORY COAST THE FLOATING ISLAND | RECYCLE 700,000 PLASTIC BOTTLES | Brown and Strong

ABIDJAN IVORY COAST THE FLOATING ISLAND | RECYCLE 700000 PLASTIC BOTTLES | Brown and Strong

The 1000 m2 floating island built by Éric Becker, a French restaurateur residing in Ivory Coast, is an attraction for many curious people. It houses a hotel restaurant and is placed on a surface built with plastic bottles. It's an original idea that stirs a lot of curiosity.
It’s an island of a different kind. Not only because of its floating nature, but also because of its basic material: plastic waste. The artificial island of 1000 m2 built by the Frenchman Eric Becker is a real curiosity is based on nearly 700,000 plastic bottles and other waste that has been recovered in Abidjan, the economic capital of Ivory Coast. The island is located in the centre of the Abidjan lagoon, between Bietry and Vridi, two Abidjanese districts. And as its author confirms in an interview with the French Press Agency (AFP), “it is really an artificial island that floats. And it can be moved”.

About Abidjan :

Abidjan is the economic capital of Ivory Coast and one of the most populous French-speaking ... of the country. The Abidjan Autonomous District, which encompasses the city and some of its suburbs, is one of the 14 districts of Côte d'Ivoire.

Abidjan est la capitale économique de la Côte d'Ivoire, dont la capitale administrative et politique est Yamoussoukro. Elle est également la ville ...... Abidjan est la principale place financière de l'Afrique de l'Ouest francophone

There's An Island Made of PLASTIC: Twice the Size of Texas!

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also known as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is an area in the North Pacific where circulating water currents and wind movements have created an island-like area of concentrated floating plastic garbage.
Constantly growing, it is believed to increase in size 10 fold every decade.
American Oceanographer Charles Moore first encountered the garbage patch in 1997 when returning to California after finishing the Los Angeles to Hawaii Transpac Yacht Race and reported that it took him 7 full days to cross it.
20 years later and this monstrosity measures around 1.6 million square kilometers and contains approximately 80,000 tonnes of plastic, that's over twice the size of Texas and 500 times heavier than a house.

A surprising thing about this area is that, despite its size, it is virtually invisible to satellites and aircraft, this is because 94% of it is made up of minute fragments of plastic called microplastics.
This complicates any location and clean-up process because it means the plastic can only be located and retrieved by boat.
These Microplastics measure just a few millimeters in diameter which also makes it very hard to remove them from the ocean without removing a large amount of important sea life with them.
Another thing that complicates the cleanup process is that because this plastic island is out in the middle of the ocean, miles away from any land, no country will accept responsibility for its clean-up, and with no funding, it is just left to grow.

Perhaps the most troubling thing about this floating island of trash is that it isn't unique.
There are similar garbage patches in the North Atlantic, discovered in 2009, the Indian Ocean, discovered in 2010, the South Pacific, discovered in 2011, and the South Atlantic, discovered in 2017. There was even one discovered fairly recently in the Meditteranean sea.

There are various non-profit organizations attempting to solve this problem but they are drastically underfunded, and while projects like Mr. Beast's Team Seas plan to raise $30 million in 2 months to remove 30 million pounds of trash from our oceans are admirable and applaudable, they are neither practical nor economical.
Between 30 and 80 million pounds of plastic enter our oceans every single day! so in the 2 months, it took to remove 30 million pounds, approximately 3 billion pounds more entered.
And at a cost of $1 a pound, today you would need around 370 Trillion dollars to clear what is currently in the ocean, and every day that passes, you'll need 3 billion dollars more.

It seems the only way we can really tackle this problem is to adapt and make changes in our lives to reduce our own dependency on plastics and therefore the amount of plastic that ends up in the ocean.
Stop buying bottled water,
Avoid take-out food that uses single-use plastics,
Recycle all we can,
Avoid buying items with excessive packaging,
Avoid products that contain microbeads,
Understand that any plastic product that we don't recycle, sooner or later, will end up in our oceans and that if we as the consumer don't buy plastic, the manufacturers won't produce it.

How Richard Branson Built A $100M Private Island

Today, Necker island is synonymous with luxury, paradise, and… Richard Branson. But it wasn't always...

Believe it or not, this island was once a barren, inhospitable piece of land. The mosquitoes were so bad, in fact, that they drove away any would-be visitors.

And then there were the snakes, the spiders, and all of the other wild creatures.

But unlike his predecessors, a young Richard Branson saw this piece of land and he fell in love with it.

You see, being the visionary that he is, he knew there was potential.

But purchasing the island wasn't so simple. First of all, there was the ten million dollar price tag. Richard could only afford a fraction of that cost.

And his reputation as a rebel made him an “unsuitable investor” according to the governor.

This sumptuous resort has been a getaway destination for countless millionaires and billionaires over the years. It’s a place where the elite gather and have a good time, far from the prying eyes of the media.

The House Made of Bottles - Puerto Iguazú, Argentina

Join me in Puerto Iguazú, Argentina at La Casa de Las Botellas - the house that's giving plastic bottles a second chance.

Alfredo Santa Cruz and his family believe that nothing should be disposable and everything should have a second use. His house walls are made with 1,200 recycled plastic bottles and his roof from 1,300 tetra-pack cartons. You'll also find beds made from bottles, windows built from CD cases, soda can lamp shades, curtains made of pen tops, and even purses, brooms, toys and household items made from recycled bottles and packaging!

Alfredo now helps other builders around the world learn his process and replicate it in their own communities. He also opens his home to the public, in hopes that this idea can raise environmental awareness of the plastics issue our world is facing today and inspire others to give their bottles a second chance.

TRASH ISLAND IN PARADISE

**I WENT BACK TO TRASH ISLAND 1 YEAR LATER, YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHAT CHANGE: **

Trash Island is now 75 metres (250 foot) bigger than when I visited. And STILL growing.

It was one of the strangest places I've ever been to but it is far from a common site on the earth. Many landfills this size and bigger exist all over the planet as an end-point to our waste... But as eluded to in the video these poisonous and toxic places directly affect the environment in detrimental ways. It seems so crude that the answer to unwanted waste is to bundle it all together and dump it in one spot.

In a rudimental way I think that if companies could find financial value in trash and waste then a cleaner environment would happen rapidly. From small schemes such as returning plastic and glass bottles for cash* to companies creating waste solutions that integrate into the culture of society. Of course there are industrial practices including: electro filter, active carbon and potassium filter, quench, HCl-washer, SO2-washer, bottom ash-grating, etc in existence to harvest the waste for valuable materials but this exists in an industrial capacity and at the very endpoint. Surely there's something that can be done before it gets this far?

*Aware this scheme occurs in other countries but not in UK
