Amtrak South West Chief - Chicago to Los Angeles in Coach

The South West Chief runs between Chicago Union Station and Los Angeles Union Station. We ride the Chief from end to end in Coach (economy class). Its a long, long trip in Coach with no showers, and with the Dining Car closed to Coach passengers. Worthwhile? You bet!

TRIP REPORT - Amtrak Southwest Chief, Chicago to Los Angeles

By popular request, I went and checked out Amtrak's Southwest Chief. This video documents in detail what it's like spending 2 days in a roomette sleeper. The Chief (at least in its current form) is often considered to be endangered, so I'm very happy I got the chance to check it out.

Overall, I was impressed with the experience. The crew was the best I've experienced thus far, the food was above average, and the scenery through New Mexico and Arizona was beautiful. Though Amtrak's Superliner equipment is starting to show its age a bit, and the overall scenery was not as impressive as some other routes I've done (particularly the California Zephyr).

You can't choose whether or not you have a roomette on the upper or lower level. If you want to change what roomette you have, you have to ring amtrak customer services (which I couldn't due to my last minute upgrade)

This train travels 2265 miles taking just over 43 hours. Departure is schedualed for 2:50pm from Chicago daily with arrival into Los Angeles schedualed for 8am two days later.

The Southwest Chief crosses 8 states and experiences 2 timezone changes along the way. From the flat fields of Illanois to the deserts of the southwest, this route truley offers diverse and interesting scenery!

Amtrak Southwest Chief - Amtrak Superliner Family Bedroom

This is the second and final video in my series AMTRAK-ing Across America by train.

Here’s a link to the first one:

In this video, we’ll complete the journey onboard an Amtrak Long Train, the Southwest Chief. The Amtrak Southwest Chief crosses more than 2,200 miles using Amtrak Superliner cars. The trip from Chicago to Los Angeles traces the Santa Fe Trail and makes stops in eight states.

In this video, you’ll experience one of Amtrak’s flagship routes; explore the Amtrak Southwest Chief Family Bedroom, the largest individual room; examine a bit of railroad history; excite in the fun only train travel allows; and I’ll even share a few key tips to make your Amtrak trip as comfortable as it can be.

The scenery we encountered on this route was some of the most spectacular I’ve ever seen from a train. The Southwest Chief crosses some inhospitable landscapes that made me grateful for the Amtrak Comfort.

A real highlight was the Raton Pass, which saw the train climb higher than 7,800 feet as it passed from Colorado to New Mexico.

I’ll even share a bit of the history of Amtrak in general, and this route in specific as we make the trek.

Southwest Chief: Surviving two days and nights in coach (and loving it)

Two nights on Amtrak's Southwest Chief train, from Los Angeles to Chicago. I got a coach seat for the (scheduled) 43-hour journey across America's Southwest and Midwest. In this video is all the spectacular scenery, on-board life, smoke stops, and friendly cafe food I experienced along one of the world's great train rides.

I kept an eye on the time, since the train was often late arriving at stations along the way. I hoped we'd be on time to the final stop, Chicago. By the end, we'd gone over 2,200 miles through California, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Illinois.

ALL ABOARD AMTRAK - Southwest Chief - Summer 2022

Come along for a ride inside the Amtrak train leaving Chicago and heading to Los Angeles! This is the Southwest Chief #3.
What is it like to be in a sleeper car, in a roomette? See for yourself.
I also show as much as possible inside this train, including the dining car, lounge car, cafe car, coach seating, as well as the bathrooms, showers, etc.
Thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and families of the Southwest Chief derailment, that happened the week after we took this train.

Today I’m taking this Amtrak sleeper train across the USA from New York to Los Angeles. The journey will take around 62 hours, passing through 12 states and 3,000 miles. I’m actually taking my Dad along with me today so let’s see how we get on in a roomette, and then for the longer stage of the journey the Amtrak Bedroom. I’ll show you what the dining options are like for each meal, the variety of classes, from First Class to coach and how you shower onboard. This is one of the longest train journeys I’ve taken to date and I can’t wait to share with you each step of the way.

Now this is a little different to many of my other train adventures, you can't exactly call this luxury but it's iconic and showcases the excitement of travelling across the entire continent of North America by train. You see things differently when crossing by rail.

Amtrak California Zephyr from Chicago to San Francisco

Amtrak’s California Zephyr will blow your mind. If you’re thinking of taking the ultimate Amtrak train journey, watch this!

With its unmatched scenery, Amtrak’s California Zephyr should top not just your train trip list, but your entire travel bucket list.

In this video, we’ll travel from Chicago to San Francisco onboard Amtrak’s California Zephyr in a luxurious Bedroom, the ultimate Amtrak Train accommodation. We’ll also explore the California Zephyr Roomette to see how big that train accommodation really is!

And, for the first time ever, I’ll even show you the shower on the California Zephyr.

You’ll see the sights, the food, and gain insight into what it’s like to travel on Amtrak’s most scenic train: The California Zephyr.

Amtrak’s California Zephyr train was named for the original train operated jointly by the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad; the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad; and the Western Pacific Railroad. It was inaugurated March 19, 1949.

From its earliest days, the marketing and advertising for the California Zephyr train route has focused on the spectacular views along the way. And, in this video, you will see why!

This video started with five and a half hours of raw California Zephyr footage, distilled down to the best. That was a tough task because nearly every mile of the California Zephyr’s 2,438 mile journey was spectacular.

Amtrak's Southwest Chief: Chicago to Los Angeles

Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our grand entrance into famous Los Angeles Union Station.

With vantage points inside the train and along the tracks, I captured the entire experience on the Southwest Chief, carefully edited from hours of footage over more than a year of filming. I hope you enjoy this video!

The adventure continues in California - be sure to check out my other videos documenting trains in the Los Angeles area:

Plastic Clothing Pegs 20 pieces:

A must to keep curtains closed together for privacy and so your sleep is not disturbed by lights when you pass through rail yards or bright advertising billboards close to the tracks. Perfect for hotel room curtains too *and* to dry hand washed clothes hung from shower curtain rails. The big round hole makes them great to keep computer cables and camera wires together. Plus...to keep papers together. And the bright colors make them easy to locate.
