More about Auto Train:

Auto Train is an 855-mile-long (1,376 km) scheduled daily train service for passengers and their automobiles operated by Amtrak between Lorton, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.), and Sanford, Florida (near Orlando). Although there are similar services around the world, the Auto Train is the only one of its kind in the United States. The Auto Train is the only north–south Amtrak train in the east to use Superliner cars.

Passengers ride either in coach seats or private sleeping car rooms while their vehicles are carried in enclosed automobile-carrying freight cars, called autoracks. The train has a maximum capacity of 320 vehicles. The train also includes lounge cars and dining cars. The Auto Train service allows its passengers to avoid driving Interstate 95 in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, while bringing their own vehicle with them.

The service operates as train 53 southbound and 52 northbound. The train is non-stop between its terminal at Lorton, Virginia, and Sanford, Florida. Amtrak's Auto Train is the successor to an earlier similarly named service operated by the privately owned Auto-Train Corporation in the 1970s.

Amtrak Auto Train, Florida to Virginia

Looking for a COVID safe travel option? The Amtrak Auto Train can take you between Florida to Virginia, overnight, with your car! Check out the process from start to finish, the sleeping options, meals and our review all during COVID.

Lorton, Virginia - Lorton Amtrak Station (Auto Train) (2021)

Lorton station is a railroad terminal in Lorton, Virginia. It is the northern terminal for Amtrak's Auto Train which operates between this station and Sanford station in Florida. When Auto-Train was originally established in Lorton in 1971, the station house was still under construction. Until it was completed sometime between 1972 and 1975, it consisted of tents and pre-fabricated houses and trailers, and the parking lot was still paved only with gravel. When it was completed, it included a former caboose and boxcar previously owned by the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad that was converted into a gift shop. As with the rest of Auto Train, the station closed in 1981 and was reopened in 1983 when it was acquired by Amtrak.

The current station, which opened in 2000 as a replacement for the original Lorton Auto-Train station, features a large, modern waiting area designed in a modern Art Deco style, with high glass walls, a small gift shop, a snack bar, and a children's playground. There is one long low level platform (which is 1,480 feet (451 m) long) designed for Auto Train boarding and 6 vehicle ramps for boarding vehicles onto the 20+ autoracks that are on the Auto Train. This station is one mile south from the Virginia Railway Express Lorton station. No other Amtrak trains stop at either station.

Amtrak Auto Train Travel Dash Cam - Loading Lorton Virginia and Unloading Sanford Florida Railfan

I tried the auto train from Lorton VA to Sanford FL on Feb 18, 2015 to save 855 miles of driving. My dash cam captured the inside scoop of how the vehicle portion of the trip is handled.
Our train had 30 auto train-cars transporting 300 vehicles.

There are 3 sections to the video:
1. After they ask for my registration name and attach a magnetic car # at an entry gate, I leave the car in a drop off lane. They video tape the exterior of every vehicle for damage.
2. An Amtrak employee loads the car onto the Auto Train.
3. At the destination in FL, an Amtrak employee unloaded the car.
The Florida employees are dressed in jackets because there was a Florida chill that week. The night I arrived it went down to 28F in Sanford (record cold temp).
We unboarded the train at exactly 9:30, so you can see it only took about 45 minutes to get my car.

Amtrak Auto Train / Lounge food review /Lorton Va.To Sanford Fla.

In this awesome memory we again ride the rails of the Auto train from Virginia to Florida. We again stay in a bedroom cabin for the night. New to this video is us trying out the lounge food and cocktails. We review food from the lounge if you wanted extra food after your meal provided in the sleeper car dining provided to you when you stay in sleeper car class. I am sure this is similar to the food you can purchase in coach class. We have so much fun socializing in the lounge car with our bartender/server Bryan and we meet such fun passengers as well to make the night on the train even more entertaining.
