Talofa Samoa - The Heart Of Polynesia

Talofa lava and welcome to Samoa, the treasured islands of the South Pacific.

Samoa is considered the heart of Polynesia. It has a 3000 year-old way of life called Fa'a Samoa that underpins a memorable visitor experience.

Samoa is a postcard of natural beauty consisting of ten islands, each offering very distinct and different environments to explore. Blessed with stunning land and seascapes, and friendly people who are proud of their country, there are many versions of paradise to discover. Drive around around in a day, or take a leisurely trip over a few days, or even tour by cycle over a week, or just base yourself at a resort and relax.

From the rainforest covered rugged volcanic mountain peaks of Savai'i, to the vast valleys leading down to Upolu's coastline ringed with a necklace of white sandy beaches.

This is Samoa, the Heart of the Pacific Ocean

Serene but spirited, wild yet well-manicured, hushed but birthed by volcanic explosions; stunning Samoa is a paradisaical paradox. Despite its intense natural beauty – all iridescent seas, jade jungles and crystal waterfalls – this is a humble place, devoid of mega-resorts and flashy attractions, but with welcomes as warm as the island sun.

Though the missionaries of the 1800s were enormously influential, the country has nevertheless clung to Fa’a Samoa (the Samoan Way), making it one of the most authentic and traditional of all Pacific societies: in some parts of the islands you’re more likely to see someone juggling fire than a house with walls.

Despite its isolation, Samoa offers accessible adventures. From the relative ruckus of Apia to the soul-stirring silence of Savai’i, you’ll find a paradise that is safe, sweet and easy to get around.

Discovering the Beauty of Samoa's Polynesian Culture

Of all the places Robert Louis Stevenson (famed travel writer and author of Treasure Island) explored, it was Samoa where he chose to stay, and to be buried. These lush volcanic islands are among the most beautiful places on Earth, and the cradle of Polynesian culture.

We spent time on both of Samoa’s two main islands—Upolu and Savai’i—and dove off of Manono Island, which is found in between. Both main islands have incredible swimming holes, including at the base of enormous tropical waterfalls, as well as lagoons, lava fields, blowholes, and pristine beaches...not to mention some world-class surf breaks.

Some of our favorite spots were Lalomanu Beach, Alofaaga Blowholes, and the drive to Falealupo, all of which are featured in the video. But for as much as we loved Samoa’s natural beauty, it was the warmth and the hospitality of the local people which blew us away.

A Day on American Samoa's Tutuila Island

In 2019, we set an adventurous goal to visit every National Park in the United States, including the 12 far-flung parks in Alaska, Hawaii, the Virgin Islands, and American Samoa.

We arrived in Pago Pago on Tutuila during their summer (which was early February) and spent the following four days exploring the unique territory of American Samoa. This aerial video showcases American Samoa's iconic Flower Pot Rock, which appears on the license plates there, and Pago Pago harbor, home to the Starkist tuna cannery.

National Park of American Samoa

This year we're visiting all 59 National Parks to celebrate the NPS centennial year and share the park love! National Park of American Samoa was #24. It's the only park in the southern hemisphere, it's the farthest in our travels and it's completely unique. Since the park doesn't have camping, we utilized its unique homestay program to stay for a week in Vatia village with a family. The village was surrounded by the park on all sides and we were constantly exploring the park right behind the house with the kids. Check out our video to see how we found our park through the beautiful land, cultures and mostly people of American Samoa!
