Exploring Benin's Culture! Wonderful Africa! [2019]

Benin got the shorter end of the stick. We had little time and did a speed run through it, while aiming for maximal possible completion, visiting Cotonou, Abomey, and Ouidah. Benin is a wonderful country with super friendly people, rolling car wrecks, lots of history and an insane amount of motorbikes and voodoo shrines.

Travel to Benin: a stunning piece of Africa | TravelGretl

Early 2018 we travelled to Benin for the Hunger Project. They celebrated their 10 year anniversary in this beautiful country, working hand in hand with locals towards a sustainable end of world hunger.

At the end of our trip we got 2 days of to see a bit of the country. Visiting Ganvie in lake Nokoue, and walking the route of the slaves. Which is very impressive!

Of course we missed out on a lot as well, not being able to see some of the wildlife in the north. There is much more to explore!

Benin is a stunning country with amazing people, I can only recommend visiting if you ever get the chance.

Quick Guide to Benin: Visa-free travel for South Africans

Benin is a West African country that is deep-rooted in intriguing culture and breathtaking, natural beauty. There is a wide variety of activities and attractions to keep everyone entertained.

You can discover the magic and mystery of the state religion known as voodoo by attending one of Benin's vibrant annual ceremonies in honour of it.

Or visit the markets in Cotonou, which will have you enthralled with their compelling yet macabre fetish section. Take to the waters and sail out to Ganvié, a floating stilted haven that sits buoyant on Lake Nakoué.

For those looking to kick back, why not lounge on the stunning, deserted, palm-fringed beaches at Grand Popo on the Bight of Benin. Here you can soak up some sun, sand, sea and palm leaf shade.

Or get wild and spot some elephants, cheetah, buffalo and lion at one of West Africa's prime game reserves.

Here's a look at the Benin and what you need to know should you want to visit:

Nigeria: The Giant of Africa

Would you like to explore intriguing facts about the history, resilient people and thriving economy of Nigeria?
Welcome back, folks! Today, we continue our journey of exploration, this time focusing on a country rich in culture and history. While we can’t cover everything there is to know about the most populous black nation on earth in this video, rest assured that we will touch on a lot of interesting stuff about Nigeria. Stick around as we take a closer look at Nigeria's past, its awesome geography, the people who make it special, some fun facts, and how they make a living. And hey, don't forget to leave your thoughts down below in the comments. Nigeria is waiting for us to explore, so let's get started! And the ‘Giant of Africa’ has a lot of sides to explore.

Looking at Nigeria Geographically
First, let's turn our attention to Nigeria's geography. Nigeria is positioned in West Africa, and it shares its borders with several neighboring countries. To the north, it’s bordered by Niger, while Chad lies to the northeast. On the eastern side, you'll find Cameroon, and to the west, you’ll find the Republic of Benin. And, of course, Nigeria stretches southward to the Gulf of Guinea, blessing it with a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.
In terms of sheer size, Nigeria is the big fish in the African pond. It covers a sprawling land area of approximately 356,667 square miles, making it the largest West African country. That's quite an expanse to explore. As we traverse this land, you'll discover a diverse landscape that ranges from vast savannahs to lush rainforests. Nigeria's topography is anything but monotonous, featuring plateaus, mountains, and winding rivers that carve their way through the terrain.
One of the most iconic rivers in Africa, the Niger River, flows through Nigeria, serving not only as a lifeline for the land but also as a source of incredible beauty. So, as we journey through Nigeria, keep in mind the striking diversity of its geography, which forms the backdrop to its rich history and vibrant culture.

Brief History of Nigeria
Let's kick things off with a trip back in time to ancient Nigeria. Long before colonialism, this land was home to several impressive civilizations. We're talking about the Nok culture, known for its exquisite terracotta sculptures dating back to 500 BC. These artists were truly ahead of their time, and their legacy lives on. As the centuries rolled on, Nigeria became the birthplace of powerful kingdoms and empires. One of the standout stars was the Kingdom of Kanem-Bornu, ruling the Sahel region. And how can we forget the mighty Benin Empire, famous for its advanced bronze casting? These African empires were thriving centers of culture, trade, and knowledge.
In the 15th century, European explorers arrived on the scene, and Nigeria was forever changed. Portuguese explorers were among the first to make their mark, setting the stage for what would become a complex colonial history. By the late 19th century, Nigeria was firmly under British colonial rule. The impact was profound, reshaping society and governance. Nigeria's journey to independence was a struggle marked by courage and determination. And then came the momentous year of October 1, 1960, when Nigeria finally broke free from colonial shackles and became an independent nation. It was a time of hope, dreams, and challenges as Nigeria stepped into the world as a sovereign nation.
But what truly makes Nigeria shine is its incredible cultural diversity. With over 250 ethnic groups, each with its own languages, traditions, and art forms, Nigeria is a vibrant country of identities and stories. Nigeria is a powerhouse in Africa, known for its music, film industry, and contributions to literature. But it also faces its share of challenges, and the journey continues. So, there you have it, folks, a glimpse into the fascinating history of Nigeria, a country that has seen it all – from ancient civilizations to colonial rule, to the struggle for independence, and now, its thriving modern identity.
