Camp Amalinda Accommodation Safaris Matopos Matobo Hills Zimbabwe Copy

Camp Amalinda is set in a spiritual location in the Matobo Hills, amidst the granite outcrops where leopard and baboon calls echo down the valley. The rooms are cleverly nestled around the huge boulders and the views are exceptional. Some of the world's most majestic granite scenery is found in the Matobo Hills, an area covering 3100 square kilometres just south of Bulawayo. It is here, with a magnificent view, that Cecil Rhodes chose his burial place and the lives of the ancient San Bushman are recorded in the rock art. The scenery and rock art are fascinating but even more wonderful is the opportunity to track rhino on foot with an experienced guide, getting extremely close to these amazing and rare creatures!

Amalinda Safari Lodge - Matobo Hills - Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe - Matopos National Park

The Matobo Hills just south of Bulawayo are composed entirely of granite, weathered into fantastic shapes. San bushmen lived in the hills about 2,000 years ago,and left hundreds of rock paintings.

Matobo National Park Zimbabwe

The Matobo National Park forms the core of the Matobo or Matopos Hills, an area of granite kopjes and wooded valleys commencing some 35 kilometres (22 mi) south of Bulawayo, southern Zimbabwe. The hills were formed over 2 billion years ago with granite being forced to the surface, this has eroded to produce smooth whaleback dwalas and broken kopjes, strewn with boulders and interspersed with thickets of vegetation. Mzilikazi, founder of the Ndebele nation, gave the area its name, meaning 'Bald Heads'.

Cecil Rhode's grave is situated here.
He may not have lived very long but he accomplished a lot of amazing achievements in his short life; he started the successful diamond company called ‘De Beers’, founded the state of Rhodesia (which was split into 2 areas and is now known as Zimbabwe and Zambia), was elected into the Cape Parliament in 1881, became the prime minister of the Cape in 1890 and founded an abundance of enterprises in Zimbabwe.

Nearing his death, Cecil John Rhodes requested that he would like to be buried on top of the flat mountain near his land (in Matopos National Park). He was unaware that this was sacred ground belonging to the Ndebele… The Ndebele referred to this mountain ‘Malindidzimu’ which means ‘dwelling place of the generous spirits’. They allowed Cecil John Rhodes to be buried on top of this Zimbabwean Mountain (a month after his death) but requested that instead of a gun salute they would pay their respect to him with a ‘Hayate’ (a respectful silence)… he was the only European to ever be given this tribute.

Cecil John Rhodes also wanted his burial site to be called “view of the world” as he thought it was the most magnificent site around; overlooking the matapos rocks, massive boulders and exquisite scenery.

In this video we will visit Matobo Hills National Park for three days.
Matobo Hills is an area of exquisite beauty, steeped in tribal history, ancient mystery, and dramatic rock landscapes. The national park has been given UNESCO World Heritage status and is home to both white and black rhinoceros, sable antelope, and the world's densest population of leopard. Birdlife is prolific and includes the highest concentration of black eagles in the world. Once the home of the San (Bushman), this area contains the richest source of the rock art found anywhere. Not only is it here that the Ndebele people buried their great king, Mzilikazi, but Cecil John Rhodes was also laid to rest on the Hill of the Benevolent Spirit or Worlds View as named by him. We visit the National Park, Rhodes grave and participate in a game drive including Rhino Tracking. The rocky granite topography boasts more than 2000 sites of San (Bushman) tribes and probably the richest source of San rock art known.
Take a walking safari around the lodge, we could bump into warthog, zebra, kudu, impala, wildebeest, hyrax and a variety of wildlife.

This is truly, a once in a lifetime trip.

It Takes2To Travel Reviews Amalinda Lodge

Amalinda Lodge in the southern Matopos area of Zimbabwe has a unique setting, built right into and around the massive granite boulders that dominate this region. Here, we experienced the closest on foot encounters we have ever had with rhinos, getting up to about 10 feet away. This is not something you can experience anywhere else.

Plan Your Trip: Victoria Falls Safari and Tours and Travel Information
A journey to Zimbabwe will take you through a wonderful patchwork of landscapes from central highveld, balancing boulders and flaming msasa trees, to laid-back towns, lush Eastern highlands mountains and a network of rivers proving live to the surrounding region going north. You can go on a game drive in Hwange National Park, take a canoe safari or a walking safari in Mana Pools National Park, fly over Victoria Falls on a Flight of Angels or view the granite boulders and rock art in Matobo Hills National Park.

Incredible Matopos National Park, Zimbabwe (matobo)

I went on a trip to Bulawayo with the Zimbabwe tourism authority and on our way back we passed through Matopos or Matobo national park where we climbed up mountain pomongwe, saw the pomongwe caves that hold ancient art work and were guided through the matobo landscape.

What an amazing trip
