Best Things to Do in Helen, Georgia

Helen, Georgia, is an old mining town and one of the most well-known Alpine villages in the United States, thanks to its location on the southern end of the Mountains of the Blue Ridge. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the small Georgia mountain hamlet (population: 582) reinvented itself as a picturesque re-creation of a classic Bavarian village, offering a taste of the Alps in the mountains of the Appalachians. Tourists flock to the area to enjoy river tubing, horse riding, canoeing, fishing, trekking, and other outdoor pursuits along the picturesque Chattahoochee River banks.

Alpine Helen Oktoberfest Parade and Keg Tapping

Come join us for 'Oktoberfest' in Alpine Helen, Georgia. This year marks the 100th anniversary of Alpine Helen. The celebration gets started with the annual 'Oktoberfest' Parade in downtown Helen. It runs from the 2nd or 3rd week of September until the last weekend or October. Many local area businesses and people participate in the 'Oktoberfest' parade. The participants love to dress up in traditional Bavarian outfits and show off their creative vehicles and floats in a tribute to the 'Oktoberfest' festival. This year we had some classic Volkswagen cars and buses join the parade. Many of whom participated in the Southern Worthersee (SOWO) car show held in Helen each May. The annual Tapping of the First Keg immediately follows the 'Oktoberfest' parade and is held at the Helen Festhalle. This years beer keg tapping had a funny mishap when the top of the keg made a beer fountain after it was tapped. It was a fun start to the 'Oktoberfest' celebration.
