Running Westinghouse iGenerators in Parallel

Running Westinghouse iGenerators in Parallel

In this video, Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, runs the Westinghouse igen 2500 in parallel with the Westinghouse igen 2200 for the first time. As the video begins, she is on the exhaust side, so it is no louder than what you hear.

The first advantage to having two Westinghouse generators is that a woman can lift them alone. Each generator weighs approximately 50 pounds. If a generator were much heavier, lifting it alone would be a problem.

When Sharon was looking for a generator that would run the air conditioning, one that would do that alone was both heavier and it took up more space than the Westinghouse generators. With smaller generators, we have more options on how to store them when we are traveling. That is a big advantage for us.

Sharon goes through how to figure the number of amps we're pulling in when she is running the generators in parallel. Because MiLena taught English and doesn't deal with numbers and she is typing the description, I can simply tell you to watch the video; Sharon explains it quite well, I'm sure. The bottom line is when we are powering the RV with the two generators, we have almost as much power as we would when we are plugged into a 30 amp electric site.

Getting the generators to run in parallel is super simple. First, both cords have an on/off switch. Before you run the generators together, you want both cords off. Plug the yellow cords into each of your generators. Be sure the ECO mode is off on both generators. Start either generator, and let it rev up. Then turn both cords on, and start the second generator.

A question we are sure to get is will the 2500 not run the A/C by itself. Yes, with an easy start or a soft start, it will. If you are wondering why then do we have two generators. It's so they can share the load. If it's a hot day when the A/C would run all day, rather than taxing one generator, we are letting them share the load.

Another advantage to running the generators in parallel is Sharon can choose how much power she needs. When we dry camp in October, we won't necessarily take both generators. The weather will be much cooler, so we won't be running an air conditioner.

The two generators also have a practical use at home. If you kept up with Texas weather in February of 2021, you may recall that our power grids were stressed because of the cold. People throughout Texas had no power. Should we have another winter like that, the two generators mean that each of the Two Tired Teachers will have a generator for her home.

We do have a playlist for the generators, so if you have questions, you might check that out.

Must Have for Your RV, Portable Generator, Honda Review EU2200i, EU2000i, EU1000i

Now that we have been RV Living Full Time for 6 months, we have found what products we truly need. One of them is a generator- whether you have solar or not.
We purchased our Honda EU2000i generator 16 years ago as Hurricane Charley was approaching our home in Central Florida. It kept us powered up for a week while our power was out. Since then it has gotten us through many extended power outages because of hurricanes. When we bought our First travel trailer in 2011, our honda generator was the perfect companion for our RV so we could dry camp.
In this video we will share our 16 year experience with this generator and its successor the EU2200i generator. We will cover these topics Important specifications, Maintenance, Storage, Connecting to an RV, extension cords, fuel cans, using it with a solar setup, and our overall 16 year impression.
We will also go over the baby brother to the EU2000/EU2200, the EU1000i generator and how that may be an excellent option.
If you are looking for portable generator, the Honda line of generators cant be beat, but they are not the cheapest generator on the market, you get what you pay for.

Running a 30 amp Camper With Two Harbor Freight Predator Generators

This is two Harbor Freight 1,600 - 2,000 watt generators connected with a parallel connector. For this test I ran the A/C, refrigerator and television. I would probably turn something off before kicking on the coffee maker or microwave. These generators are super quiet and you can barely hear them running inside.

I got this system primarily for emergency power but the twin generators give me the flexibility to take one when I don't need the big setup. The twin generator configuration means double the maintenance and higher up front costs. We felt the costs were justified because the generators are easier to move. I couldn't life the 3,500 watt generator but I can load these in the truck without assistance.
x

Pairing two Harbor Freight 2000 watt Predator generators

Using the parallel connector to create a very robust 3,200 watt generator with 4,000 watt surge capacity. These two ran the A/C and refrigerator on our camper while barely breaking a sweat. Quiet enough you could stand next to them and have a conversation.

A lot better than our old 5,300 watt monster that weighed a ton and you could hear it all over the neighborhood.

Honda 2000 vs Champion 2000 Inverter Generator Comparison

The Honda 2000 watt inverter generator is the gold standard of inverter generators. Many companies have been releasing their own version to compete with Honda. We just purchased a new Champion 2000 watt inverter generator and decided to compare it with my father in laws Honda. The units are very similar and run in parallel with another 2000 watt unit. When paralleled they can put out near 3700 watts to power your entire RV.

RV Generator: Portable or On-Board?

We chose portable generators over the on-board generator for our 2019 Arctic Fox. There are a lot of pros and cons between the portable and on-board RV generator. In this video, we talk about those pros and cons as well as why we chose the portable RV generator. A generator is an important part of the electrical management system within an RV, so knowing how will ou use your RV is a consideration in determining which type of RV generator will suit you.

Champion 2500 watt Inverter Generator - A detailed look

I picked up a Champion 2500 inverter generator at BJ's for $449. Here is what was in the box, how I broke it in and how it sounds. A nice portable generator that is priced well.

Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator 2 Year Review

Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator 2 Year Review

Sharon, one of the Two Tired Teachers, reviews our Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator. After 2 years, it is still doing exactly what we bought it to do.

That's the first thing Sharon talks about is why we got a generator. We bought the generator to go along with our Micro Minnie when we are boondocking.

One of the questions we've been asked is what do we run with our generator. One of the things we do is plug the RV into the generator. You have to use a dogbone to do that, but it recharges the house battery, the battery on the front of your RV.

We have run our microwave, coffee pot, and space heater off of the generator. At home to exercise the generator between trips, we've plugged weed eaters and other yard equipment into it.

Another question we've had is how often do we change the oil. The owners' manual says to change the oil after the first 20 hours and then every 50 hours after that. During the first 20 hours, you need to have a load on the generator. A space heater is an example of an appliance that puts a load on a generator.

One thing that the generator we have does not have is an hour meter. The hour meter keeps up with the number of hours the generator has been run so that you can change the oil at the appropriate time. Since ours doesn't have the hour meter, Sharon keeps track of the hours in a small notebook. She gets to the closest quarter of an hour to log it in.

If we have a long trip planned, one where we know we will be using the generator, if it is anywhere near time to change the oil, Sharon goes ahead and changes it because she want to do that at home, rather than on the road.

One of the things Sharon has done for the last 9 or 10 months is run the generator every two weeks or so when we aren't using it on trips. It seems to keep it in good shape. In the summer, she's plugging yard tools into it to give it a load.

In December of 2020, when we knew we wouldn't be traveling for a couple of months, Sharon bought a can of Sea Foam and put it in with the gas that had been left over. She let the engine run for about 30 minutes to see that it was completely through the engine.

When Sharon was ready to start the generator for the 2021 travel season, it wouldn't start. The problem was the spark plug. Although it may seem as if under 100 hours of use wouldn't necessitate a change of spark plugs, it did. Several times we ran the generator for under an hour. Other times we ran it as much as 7 hours in a day.

Changing the spark plug wasn't difficult, but it brings to mind some things that come with the Westinghouse iGen2200 Generator. One of those things is a funnel that is shaped so that putting oil in the generator is very easy. Another is a pre-measured amount of oil. Sharon has kept the container so that when she changes the oil, she fills that container and knows she doesn't need to worry about overfilling the generator with oil.

A third thing that came with the generator is a tool used to change the spark plug. You will need that to change the spark plug.

Another thing Sharon does to help the generator run smoothly is she uses ethanol free gas and she puts stabilizer in with the gas.

One of the questions we've been asked is how long will the generator run on a tank of gas. We can run the generator approximately 10 hours per gallon of gas.

When you crank the Westinghouse iGen2200 generator, you have to crank going straight up. You need to do three things to start this generator. First, vent the gas. Second, you move it to choke, and finally, you pull the crank straight up.

Once you've started it, give it a minute to run before putting much of a load on it. If you don't do that, it may very well die and you'll have to crank it again.

The Westinghouse iGen2200 generator seems to run better if you gradually increase the load. For example, at home when I just need to exercise it some, I'll start with a space heater on low. Once it's run for a bit, I increase the load to high, and it works for me.

Remember that the generator does have an exhaust, and that exhaust gets hot. It isn't excessively hot, but it could melt a water bottle that was right beside the generator.

For a generator, it is quiet. You can easily carry on a conversation while standing at the generator. You don't have to yell; it's quiet enough that you can speak normally.

One of the questions we often get is have we run the AC with it. The short answer is yes. We do have an easy start on our AC, so the generator is able to run it. When we first got the generator, we ran the AC for an hour. Honestly, that isn't a reason why we got the generator, so running the AC off the generator isn't something we normally do.

Finally, do not hesitate to call the 800 number on the generator if you have any questions. A real person took our call when we called it. They knew the answers to our questions.
