THE ALBANIAN ALPS | 3-5 Day Hiking Itinerary for Valbona Valley & Theth National Park
The Albanian Alps, also known as the Accursed Mountains, are located in the north of Albania and occupy about 8% of the country’s territory. Home to dramatic mountain peaks, deep green valleys, and thick forests, this is the finest hiking area in Albania. It’s the most attractive and fascinating part of the country in our opinion, but also relatively isolated since there are only a couple of roads in and out. In fact, there is no road connecting the two most famous parks: Valbona and Theth, and you have to hike over a mountain pass to get from one to another.
???? DAY 1: Shkodra - Komani Lake - Valbona Valley National Park
☑️ Take shuttle from Shkodra to Koman, take the ferry to Fierze, take the shuttle to Valbona Valley National Park, do a short hike to Kukaj Valley (and the Ridge near Thatë peak) or just relax at the guesthouse

???? DAY 2: Hike in Valbona Valley National Park
☑️ Hike to the Montenegrin-Albanian border pyramid (17.5 kms/11 mi long with 1,280 meters/4,200 ft of elevation gain). From the pass, you can also continue to Rosi peak, which adds another 400 meters/1,300ft of elevation.
Alternative trails include Jezerca Lakes and peak, Thatë peak, and Kolata peak.
???? DAY 3: Hike the famous Valbona to Theth Trail
☑️ This point-to-point hike is about 17 kms or 10.5 miles long, depending on where you start and finish it. We would say the difficulty level is medium, and you don't need to be fit or have a lot of mountain experience to complete the trek. Just make sure you can walk for 6 to 9 hours!

???? DAY 4 (& 5): Hike in Theth National Park + Bus Back To Shkodra
☑️ If you’re catching the bus back on DAY 4, you can do a half-day hike to the iconic Theth Church, Grunas Waterfall, and the Blue Eye. If you plan to hike all the way to the Blue Eye, keep in mind that it’s 17 kms or 10.5 miles total. Alternatively, you can hike to the Church and Grunas Waterfall only, which is a lot shorter and you’ll only need about 3-hours.
If you want to spend a full day in Theth instead (and take the bus back on DAY 5), we don’t recommend hiking this extremely crowded trail! Instead, opt for a more rewarding trek to one of the peaks, caves, or glacial lakes. Find other trail options in the tourist center in town.

My fifth day in Albania continued in the beautiful mountain town of Theth in the Albanian Alps! Come along with me as I try some Albanian Alps food and explore an ice-cold waterfall and mountain attractions in Theth, Albania!

My morning in Theth National Park (Parku Kombëtar i Thethit) with my friends at Travel Albanian Alps was off to an amazing start.
First, I met up with my friend Andy from Travel Albania Alps at Logu i Harushave, our guesthouse in Theth. I tried some rakija and then we set out to explore the area. Along the way, we passed by the Kisha e Thethit, or the Church of Theth, which dates back to 1892!
Then, it was time to hike along a rocky path to the waterfall. I suggest wearing hiking boots, but my sneakers held up fine. Then, we crossed a bridge with some missing planks. You have to be careful crossing it!
On the other side of the bridge is an old house with lots of branches piled up outside. Nearby was a map of the park. I drank some water from a stream and continued down the path. We passed a cow and a tiny waterfall and climbed some boulders to get our first glimpse of Waterfall Theth.
The waterfall was gorgeous! I took off my shoes to wade into the pool below the falls. The water was frigid! It was so icy! I had to stand on a rock after 20 seconds because my feet were freezing! My feet were numb afterward!
Then, we headed back to town. The hike was a bit tougher because of the rocks and the steepness of parts of the trail. We passed some tourists on the way and only took 20 minutes to get back. Then, we stopped at a wooden bar with an amazing view of the mountains and valley. Their rakija was light and smooth!
Next, we visited Lock-In Tower, the defense tower of Theth. It was built on a huge boulder, so the floor is rock. Upstairs, we met a man who played a traditional instrument for us! On the third level is more carpet, a small chest, and tiny windows where archers would fire at invaders. There was also an old rifle! The tower dates back over 400 years!
Then, we headed back to the guesthouse for lunch. We had a tomato-and-cucumber salad, fried potatoes, goat cheese, homemade yogurt, grilled vegetables, cheese-spinach-and-onion byrek, baked potatoes, and local beef. I also had some rakija!
The cheese and potatoes were amazing. The beef was delicious and gelatinous and went well with the yogurt, and the cigar-shaped byrek was hot and fresh!
The roasted red pepper and eggplant was also outstanding. It was the best beef I’ve had in Albania! The byrek was also the best I’d had so far! It was crispy and the combination of cheese, onion, and spinach was next-level!
The guesthouse’s cottages have mirrored windows so you can’t see inside, but people inside can see outside. The cottages are all wood and have a king-sized bed and a spot to hang your clothes. There’s only a glass wall separating the room from the bathroom, so you can see into it! It was incredible. It was like a nice mountain cabin!
I loved the guesthouse. I also saw one of their rooms, which has a king-sized bed and a twin bed. Further upstairs were more rooms with two twin-sized beds and a king-sized bed. The bathrooms were all really clean and nice. But the best part about the guesthouse was the amazing view of Theth and the sound of the mountain wilderness!

INSANELY BEAUTIFUL mountain village! FIRST IMPRESSIONS of Albanian Alps - THETH, ALBANIA TRAVEL VLOG
We are finally in the beautiful mountain village of Theth, Albania!
We had a van picked-up us from our hostel in Shkoder to our accommodation in Theth. The van costed 1500 lek/person. We stayed at a beautiful cabin with mountain view at Logu i Harushave. The stay + meals were included. We cannot say enough how fresh and delicious the food was!
We didn't do much on our first day in Theth other than walking around and exploring the lovely village itself. Walking around the village felt so magical...so fairytale-ish!

TIRANA, ALBANIA | 8 BEST Things To Do In & Around Tirana
Tirana is located in central Albania and has been the country’s capital since 1920. And although it experienced political turmoil until 1991, the city has now evolved into the cultural and entertainment center of the country. Check out the Best Things to Do In & Around Tirana:
8. Free walking tour
The first and foremost thing you should do in Tirana is go on a free walking tour. During the 2.5 hour tour, you explore Tirana’s downtown area while learning about the city and country’s turbulent history, art, and everyday life. The tour runs every day from the Opera House.

7. Visit the New Bazaar
Tirana’s New Bazaar (Pazari ri Bazaar) is a newly renovated market that offers fresh fruits, vegetables, as well as souvenirs, local wine, and raki. Around the bazaar, you will find several bars and restaurants to drink and eat at. Many of these places are called ‘zgara’s’, which is a grill house.
6. Go on a day trip to Kruja
Located only 20 km north of Tirana, Kruja can easily be reached by public bus from the “South and North Albania Bus Terminal”. Kruja played a crucial role in the 15th century when it was the center of the Albanian opposition, led by the national hero Skanderbeg during the Ottoman invasion. Skenderbeg is still celebrated here today and there is even an entire museum dedicated to him. You can find this museum inside the beautiful castle that overlooks the town.
5. Wine & dine at Tirana Castle
Tirana also has its very own castle, located in the heart of the city. Only this fortress has been transformed into a commercial space, filled with restaurants, wine bars, art and souvenir shops. It’s actually a great place to have dinner with a glass of wine, and we found it quite affordable as well.
4. Explore Blloku
Another great area for entertainment in Tirana is Blloku. This small neighborhood really comes alive at night and is a trendy spot among locals. In addition to a variety of hip bars, night clubs, and cafés, you can also find some of the best restaurants in Tirana here.
3. Take the Dajti Ekspres
Located in the outskirts of Tirana, the Dajti Ekspres cable car takes you to Dajti National Park which is 1,613m above sea level. It’s easy to get to the cable car station by public bus. Once you’re in the cable car, the ride offers panoramic views of Tirana and the nature around it.

2. Visit Bunk’art
Bunk’art 1 is a large bunker with five levels, which was meant to be used by communist leader Hoxha and his regime in case of a nuclear attack. The bunker has now been converted into a museum, which covers the history of Albania’s past century in great detail. But it’s the preserved rooms, conceptual art, and sound effects that really bring the story to life.
1. Hike Lake Bovilla
Lake Bovilla is a stunning reservoir that lies within Dajti National Park. Surrounded by two mountain ranges, hiking is the best activity you can do here. Gamti Mountain offers the most spectacular views of the lake and doesn’t require any experience. There are even some man-made stairs that help you get to the top.

ALBANIA is beautiful!. The diversity, the scenery, the people, we are surprised that Albania is still so undiscoverd. In our van life roadtrip we drive through the amazing Albanian Mountains and we can’t wait to show you our 3 best hikes!

We start off with one of the most beautiful hikes I have done in my life. The hike starts in Lëpushë and you will hike in 2,5 hours to one off the most amazing mountain peaks you have ever seen. The viewpoint from Maja e Vajushes is truly one of the best I have ever seen and we have been hiking in the European Alps a lot. In summer this hike is actually marked as easy, but in spring it can still be tricky. Especially when you go off track like us. One minute we where the happiest people alive and the next we were nervous little human beings that could not find a way down. With the sun starting to set we were getting nervous. In the end we found a really steep way down and couldn’t be more happy to be back in our van. Lesson here: don’t go off track. Especially when there is a lot of snow and it is already getting dark. Lesson learned!
We continu our roadtrip to the Koman Lake. Nobody really knows, but you can do some beautiful hiking here. Also returning from your hike and being able to jump into the Koman Lake is amazing.
We cannot make a Hiking in Albania video without going to Valbona (Valbonë). So that’s what we did of course. Valbona Valley is known for it’s spectaculair scenery with peaks as sharp as knives. You can do a lot of hiking here and if you want you can easily spent a couple of weeks. But the one hike you should at least try to do is the hike to Theth! Unfortunately we were not able to go, because of the snow. But we did do another hike and this must have been just as beautiful, because the views were spectaculair!
Our Van Life Roadtrip in Albania has come to end. We will be heading to Montenegro and yes we will be doing a lot of hikes there aswell. Can’t wait!

What to do in Theth, Albania?
Well, the most popular activity is hiking. There are many hiking trails including the famous Theth to Valbona hike.
On this episode, we hiked to the Blue Eye in Theth, a paradise waterfall in the middle of the Albanian Alps. We also visited a historical site in the village called the Lock-in tower. Check out our vlog!
