Comprising more than 1,122 sq km, Akagera National Park is characterized by woodland, swamps, low mountains, and savannah.
Its varied terrain shelters an abundance of beautiful wildlife. On this tour, we see zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions, and dozens of bird species. However, Akagera Park is home to hundreds of bird species and is truly a birdwatcher's paradise.
Located in the southern part of the park, on the shore of the vast Lake Ihema, which is home to hippos and crocodiles.

Here are some images from the safari we did in the park. Driving and filming and/or taking pictures was much more challenging than I expected. To keep the camera steady while driving was impossible, but I think I have managed to save some of the shots with some help of my editing software!
I hope this video can give you some idea of the beauty of Akagera. It is a unique park with a beautiful story that certainly deserves to be visited!

Rwanda - Akagera National Park
Akagera National Park protects animals and vegetation in savannah, mountain and swamp. Lakes make up over a third of the park. After the Rwandan Civil War much land was allocated as farmland.
We visited Rwanda on our overland trip from the Netherlands to South Africa and South America; see our channel for hundreds of clips.

SAFARI IN RWANDA / AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK /game drive+ big five
Akagera National Park is one the 3 national parks in Rwanda and is one of the biggest national parks in rwanda covering a total surface area of 1,122 square km2.
The park located in the Eastern part of Rwanda, hugging the border with Tanzania.
2h30 drive from Kigali.
The national park is home to over 8,000 large wildlife animals such as: species like lions, giraffes, zebras, elephants, hippos, antelopes, oribis, bush babies, impalas, hartebeests, hyenas, buffaloes, crocodiles,.. There are approximately 10 lakes situated within Park.
Activities in Akagera National Park:
1. Game Drives (night and day): The national park offers visitors both day and night game drives, with night guided game drives giving visitors a chance to view the nocturnal animals like leopards, lions, civets, hyenas, bush babies and serval cats to mention but a few.
2. Bird Watching ????: The national park is home to over 500 species of birds. Visitors on a birding trip in the park can spot bird species like;crowned cranes, Swamp Fly Catchers, the Red-Faced Barbets.The diverse habitats for birds in Akagera national park give visitors a chance to view different kinds of bird species residing within the national park.
3. Boat cruise ???? :Visitors in Akagera national park seeking to experience the beauty of its lakes should consider a boat trip on Lake Ihema, which is the second biggest lake in Rwanda. Visitors taking boat trips in Akagera can drift along the forest-fringed body of water.
4. Sport Fishing ???? : Visitors can spend a day relaxing and fishing on the lake shores and later cook your catch over an open bond fire at your campsite.
5. Camping ????: Three campsites offer basic facilities for overnight park stays and Visitors are asked to bring their own camping equipment and supplies.
6. Community Tours visitors get to mingle with the local people, learn their lifestyles, and also learn how to milk cows on a farm, make local banana beer and honey among others.
When is the best best time to visit A.N.P?
The national park can be visited at any time of the year. However it is the best that you can visit national park is during the dry season, which is between Long dry season (June to September)
•Short dry season (December – February)
•Long wet season (March-May)
•Short wet season (October – November)

Camping at Akagera National Park
Last week I went camping for a night at Akagera National Park in Rwanda. We stayed at Shakani Camp which doesn't have any fence around it, so animals wander freely. There' hippos in the lake, monkeys in the trees, and sometimes even elephants in the tents! A fabulous experience.
