Aix en Provence France. Pretty & chic Aix. A travel vlog on joie de vivre in Aix en Provence France.

Aix en Provence, France. Is Aix the prettiest town in Provence? Aix en Provence France is as chic as Paris but laid back and sunny. In this Aix en Provence vlog we visit Aix, a gorgeous city of golden stone and cheerful fountains where we find a true enjoyment of life — joie de vivre!

Aix en Provence France isn’t a hidden gem, but it is a fantastic gem. Aix is located in Southern France, in the Provence countryside, beloved by impressionist painters. It’s the birthplace of Cezanne. And while it feels as chic as Paris France, Aix is only about 45 minutes from fishing villages and dramatic, sunny nature in Cassis and Calanques National Park. Marseille and Nice are the closest airports.

Perhaps proximity to the coast contributes to the relaxed allure of Aix that we’ll show you in this Aix en Provence travel vlog. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Aix-en-Provence France was the capital of Provence when the city’s wealthy residents embellished it with elegant architecture, refined fountains, and picturesque squares. Today Aix en Provence France is a lively university city that captures our hearts with its contagious joie de vivre, and where to be on time for an appointment is to be 15 minutes late.

There are so many things to do in Aix en Provence. However, a local friend tells us that very best thing to do in Aix en Provence, the top of the top ten things to do in Aix en Provence is simply soak in the atmosphere. This is the kind of slow travel tip we love. It makes everything seem less touristy.

For this stop in Aix en Provence France, on our gap year or two of full time travel, we’re here in May on one of Aix’s 300 days a year of sunshine. Everywhere we turn there are fountains and statues and plane trees. The atmosphere starts to get more buzzy at the regal square, Place Richelme, site of the Aix market, the daily food market. Hugged by 17th-century buildings with their light blue shutters opened against golden walls, the market seems both alive and also like a trip back in history.

As we continue the Aix en Provence vlog, a few steps away In front of city hall, Place de l’Hotel de Ville, the Aix flower market explodes with color. In the Aix fruit and flower market, Joie de vivre can be as simple as playing cards while you work. Friendship is a priority in Aix en Provence France.

The fashionable but laid-back atmosphere settles over you. Somehow despite its popularity, Aix en Provence France still feels authentic. Seeing Aix in this new relaxed way, we feel like it’s a hidden gem right in front of your eyes. Immersive travel is the best.

By mid-day locals come back from the market and morning coffee and its all about lunch at a laid-back pace. No need to hurry over our meal, most shopkeepers in Aix en Provence close up until mid afternoon anyway.

Nicknamed the village of one thousand fountains, we’ve accidentally come upon all sorts during our morning wander. We bumped into fountains on the grand boulevard, on small cobbled streets, and even little back alleys.

And for some reason all this wandering around without any goal except to enjoy it makes Aix en Provence France suddenly feel like a less traveled destination, even though it’s a crowd favorite for anyone stopping in Southern France in the Provence region. That’s how you make a place that’s well on the map into a place that’s off the beaten path. It’s perfect for any trip to France!

AIX EN PROVENCE - FRANCE - 2021 (4K)

I've lived a little less than 6 month in Aix en Provence, in the south of France since it was mostly full COVID time I decided to make a little something about this city which I like A LOT ! If you've never been there and like the Provence style you should definitely visit it. I'd recommend going there in May-June, at the beginning of summer.

You're going to find that the city of Aix-en-Provence in the south of France is one of the most delightful places you could ever visit as you’re about to discover out in this detailed movie.
We bring you on a detgailed walking tour of the large pedestrian zone with its charming historic buildings, many shops, cafés, restaurants and the very famous outdoor markets selling fresh produce, clothing, antiques and all kinds of stuff with lots of local characters to observe and interact with. This small city is the perfect size, big enough to keep you busy for several days and yet not too large that you're going to feel lost or frustrated that you can't see everything.
Aix is located in the heart of Provence, a region that has so many wonderful destinations from Avignon to Nice. And you will see that AIX is one place that you must not miss.
You could easily spend a few days here and travel out to visit other nearby destinations, or if you only have one day, it is certainly possible to see most of AIX as we’re going to show you in the movie.

Things to do in Aix-en-Provence: 3 minute guide to the top attractions

Visitor Vids tourist guide to Aix-en-Provence, France. Make the most of your day out with our, two minute guide to the top visitor attractions in Aix-en-Provence.

Aix en Provence, is a vibrant university city in the south of France, about 30 kms from Marseille and the coast.

The elegant and grandiose Cours Mirabeau, is at the heart of the city. Lined with magnificent plane trees and edged with classical town-houses, the vast thoroughfare spans from the impressive Rotonde fountain past café terraces and fountains to the statue of Good King René. It was he who made Aix his 15th-century Provençal capital.

Aix, was founded in the first century BCE by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, who gave his name to its springs. Over the years it has been a cultured centre for artists, lawyers and nobles and Aix is the birthplace of the post-impressionist painter Paul Cézanne. The artist's last studio has been left as if he had just popped out. Visit and you’ll see his painting and still-life props still in place. Spy the white, granite stone mountain of Sainte Victoire overlooking the city which was a frequent topic of his work.

Stroll through the Mazarin district, to the south of the Cours Mirabeau with its fine 17th and 18th century aristocratic houses. Here you’ll find the Granet museum Aix's main gallery, as well as the Caumont art centre, both worth a visit. As on the outskirts of the city, is the modernist art museum, the Fondation Vasereley.

Wander to the north of the Cours Mirabeau through the old centre with its elegant narrow streets, grand squares and fountains. Head to the town hall square, with its 16th-century clock tower past ornate Renaissance town-houses to the Archbishop's Palace, and just beyond, St Sauveur cathedral. Here you’ll find Nicolas Froment's 15th-century Burning Bush triptych, one of the French south's finest art-works.

Fashionable shops, restaurants, cafes and bars abound in the city, which is a lively meeting centre and justly named the city of a thousand fountains.

Aix en Provence, France 4K update

travel videos & photos at: with text, maps & links.
France has many beautiful cities. One of the finest, that we will be showing you in this episode is Aix-en-Provence, a town with that special ambience of the outdoor restaurants, the cafes, the pedestrian lanes, the little fountains, the historic buildings, street markets, and all kinds of wonderful sights to explore. We will be taking you there on a daytrip showing you how many wonderful things you can see in only six hours. Of course, if you have more time, this would be a delightful place to spend a couple of nights, or maybe a couple of weeks.
Colorful street markets are one of the fine attractions here, and they happen every day. But the main markets are on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. We will be showing you a lot, later in the program.
And we will spend a lot of time walking through those pedestrian lanes, looking at the little plazas, the historic sites like City Hall, fountains surrounded by café tables, and much more.
Aix is famous for its fountains, with several big ones along this main street of the Cours Mirabeau, and the sidewalk restaurants. It's one of the most glorious boulevards in the country.
During our visit the main market square was under renovation, and so everything had moved to this main boulevard of the Cours Mirabeau, which was wonderful. It became a pedestrian promenade with all of the stalls set up and all the sidewalk restaurants along it. Most famously, Les Deux Garcons.
We'll come back to this main street of Cours Mirabeau later in the program, but for now it's time to dive into the pedestrian zone – show you quickly on the map an outline of where we're going, straight up through the main square of City Hall to the Cathedral, then back around and down in a big loop circuit that brings us along some of the main pedestrian lanes, then back to Cours Mirabeau and see more of that fascinating street market.
Turning away from the sidewalk cafes of the Cours for now, we take a stroll into the old town along Rue Clemenceau, a typical street, mostly for pedestrians and lined with shops.
And there's another market one more block further on Rue Vauvenargues called Place Richelme. It's a beautiful little plaza with trees and sunshine streaming in. The natural lighting is filtered by the leaves to give it a golden glow, and another lovely mix of items for sale.
Then you will soon arrive at the prettiest of all squares in town, the Place de l’Hôtel de Ville, the City Hall Square.
The clock tower was built in 1510 and became the symbol of local power in the city, towering over the City Hall.
The main pedestrian lane continues north, changing names now to Rue Gaston de Saporta Rue and leads to Aix's main church, the Cathedral of St-Sauveur.

The transit system here has these minibuses, a very efficient way to get around. They can carry seven people, and they have a low floor that makes it easy to get in and out. You just buy your ticket from the bus driver.
Rue Espariat is one of the main streets of the old town, with many more attractive side lanes along the way.
At this point we have just about come full circle in our little walk around the old town of Aix.
Place d'Albertas is named after one of the city's leading 18th-century families in 1724 Henri d'Albertas built his private mansion on the Parisian model of royal palaces. The fountain in the center was created in 1862.
Around the corner is yet another charming spot the Place St. Honore, the usual outdoor café tables with elegant shops around it and some old streets leading off from it.
People love these outdoor clothing markets because you have a tremendous variety of goods for sale, and the prices are generally lower than you'll ever find in a store.
These same vendors usually come back each week catering to mostly local clientele, so they've got to keep the quality fairly decent and the prices very good.
In the other section of the market are the wonderful foods of Provence. You've got a big variety of fresh foods here – your vegetables, most of them grown in the south of France. If it's out of season, wintertime if it's they would be brought in from perhaps the Middle East, or Israel, from Africa, or Italy, but the south of France has got a wonderful climate for growing agricultural products all year round. And one of the specialties is the olive. There must be hundreds of kinds of olives that are produced in France.
As a visitor you're probably not doing any cooking, so you don't need to purchase vegetables, but you might just get some fresh fruits, or some snacks for the road. And there's always some kind of selection of prepared foods that are ready-to-eat, whether it's a simple sandwich, or an elaborate paella. And just to enjoy the people watching here in the scenery the colors the smells the sounds the beautiful buildings all around, it makes for an adventure just in itself.
