Chasing Africa's Last 737-200

Welcome to part 3 of the Africa Adventure series in which Gabriel Leigh finds himself in Harare, Zimbabwe having to work a little harder than expected to track down Air Zimbabwe’s 737-200, one of the last passenger -200s in the world. Though he has a flight on it booked to Bulawayo and Victoria Falls, the President of Zimbabwe has other plans, and it’s a down-to-the-wire scramble to try and catch the plane. Will Gabriel succeed? Or will he end up on the ERJ-145 to Victoria Falls like so many before him? Watch to find out.

The 10 Most Dangerous Airlines in the World

Get more Tips here!

Sometimes we also want to know which are the most dangerous airlines in order to avoid them when we are organizing our trip, so here are The 10 Most Dangerous Airlines in the World rated by AirlineRatings.com, non certified by the IOSA

10) Southwest Airlines
This is a major United States airline established in 1967. Ironically, this was considered among the ten safest in the world in 2012, what happened then? apart from the lack of minimum standards and certification, of course...

9) AirAsia Thailand
This is a joint venture of Malaysian low-fare airline AirAsia and Thailand's Asia Aviation. This was the only low-cost airline operating both domestic and international flights from Suvarnabhumi Airport. It's not certified by the IOSA, but, at least it's allowed to enter in the EU.

8) Iraqi Airways
This is the national carrier of Iraq, being the second oldest airline in the Middle East, and a member of the Arab Air Carriers Organization. It has had several incidents, accidents and hijackings since it began operations in 1945. And it's not certified by the IOSA nor allowed to enter the EU.

7) Kam Air
This one is headquartered in Kabul and it was founded in 2003. It operates 90 percent of domestic flights in Afghanistan. But it's not certified by the IOSA, not allowed in the EU and not even follows the ICAO, so...

6) Ariana Afghan Airlines
Also known simply as Ariana, it is the largest airline of Afghanistan and serves as the country's national carrier. Founded in 1955, it has been on the list of air carriers banned in the European Union since October 2006. And it has had 13 incidents and accidents, so not the best option.

5) Blue Wing
This airline from Suriname, started in 2002, but after three accidents and legal problems, now it performs cargo as well as commercial flights to the interior of Suriname and the surrounding region. At least, it follows the ICAO, not the other certifications but this one yes.

4) Airlines PNG
PNG Air is an airline from Port Moresby, that operates scheduled domestic and international flights, as well as contract corporate charter work. It started in 1987, but it has had seven accidents since then. It's allowed to enter the EU, but... there's no need, really...

3) NOK Air
This is a low-cost airline in Thailand operating mostly domestic services, the second largest in the country. It's free of fatalities, but it's not certified by the IOSA, ICAO or endorsed by FAA. So, maybe, it's not the best option.

2) Yeti Airlines
This airline is based in Kathmandu since 1998. This airline is only endorsed by the FAA. Togetherwith Tara Air, form the largest domestic flight operator in Nepal, and during its short history has had 4 accidents that bring it to the second place in safety.

1) Nepal Airlines
Formerly known as Royal Nepal Airlines, the airline operates domestic services. Founded in 1958, the airline has been banned in the European Union since 2013. It has had 15 incidents and accidents. And it's only certified by FAA. So it really is the most dangerous airline rated in 2018.

Do you think any other airline should be on this list?

How Can This Plane Still FLY?! African Airliners

I took a flight across Tanzania with the relatively unknown Flightlink Airlines of Tanzania on a 30 year old Embraer 120, which left me wondering - how is this plane still flying!

My WORST Flight Experiences - What Happened on These Flights?

What was your worst flight experience? I recently experienced some of the most uncomfortable, expensive, and basic services on my recent flights.

I had an uncomfortable flight on Southwest Airlines to Dallas. Nothing really went wrong. Just one of those days you have no shoulder room with 3 big guys in the same row. It was beyond a tight squeeze. Southwest has a free seating policy which is more speedy but has no guarantee of seat and space. The narrower width on the 737 didn’t help of course, I think A320 may be better in my situation with a wider fuselage.

Next, I flew on Delta B717 to Atlanta. The flight time was 2 hours and there was only a snack available in First Class. This does not compare well with many international airlines which serve a full meal for the same length of the flight. It reflects the current state of airline service. The fares are much higher now but passengers are not getting more out of it.

On my recent United flight from New York to LA, I was served very basic food and the spoon was not even cleaned and checked properly. United has probably one of the worst in-flight catering over the years.

I’ve also had some good experiences recently on Bangkok Airways and Korean Air. All passengers on Bangkok Air can enjoy the airport lounge before the flight and receive a full meal on a 1-hour domestic flight.

8 Most Dangerous Flights IN THE WORLD! World's Scariest Flights

Flying is now very much a part of our everyday lives, so much so that virtually everyone has flown somewhere and has a story to tell about it, fortunately their stories will not be as scary as these 8 Most Dangerous Flights In The World!

1. Screwloose
A passenger on an Air Canada flight heard a loud Pop outside his window halfway through his flight, when he turned to see what had made the sound he saw a sheered off bolt had impacted on the outer pane of his window and was embedded there. The pilot said they were safe to land because the internal pane was undamaged and the cabin remained pressurized. (I'd be less worried about where the bolt was, and more worried about where it came from!)

2. Takeoff and landing
The scariest times during a flight are take-off and landing especially if you were on flight United Airlines flight 1243. The plane was making its approach to land at Newark Airport when Air Traffic control cleared another plane for take-off on an intersecting runway. A delay in Take-off cause both planes to reach the intersection at almost the same time, passing just 50 yards away laterally and 135 vertically.

3. That's Gratitude!
A United Airlines flight from Newark to Venice was taxiing to the runway when Newlywed couple Mike and Rachel Brumfield noticed a fuel leak. Mike rushed to Inform the air stewards and was told to sit down, when the cabin crew checked for themselves they told the pilots, and the fire service was called. The flight was canceled and United Airlines thanked the couple and gave them a food voucher but they didn't supply or source accommodation so the Newlywed couple spent the night on the floor of Newark Airport.

4. Hail Mary!
A flight heading to Phoenix, Arizona from San Antonio, Texas was hit by a tremendous thunderstorm, the storm caused the plane to drop like a stone and the passengers experienced extreme turbulence as it was pummeled by wind and hail which ripped out the planes cockpit window, the pilots were forced to make an emergency zero-visibility landing in El Paso.

5. False start
An Indonesian plane flying from China to Bali was forced to turn back 1 and half hours into its flight when passengers complained of a whistling noise. The cabin crew noticed that the system had detected that the front passenger door wasn't closed properly although it hadn't detected this until they were in the air. upon returning the plane was checked for 30 minutes and then allowed to resume its flight to Bali.

6. Snakes on a plane
An Aeromexico flight from Mexico City to Torreon had an unwelcome passenger that appeared as the passengers seat-belted up ready for landing. Emerging from the overhead storage compartment like something from a B movie, this bright green snake scared all the passengers on the plane especially when it almost drops to the floor.
even though the flight was given priority landing there was no way anyone was going to obey the seat beat sign!

7. Shakes on a plane
Passengers on a Malaysia Airlines flight from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur heard a loud noise and then felt tremendous turbulence, some said it was like flying through the air on an unstable washing machine. Passengers we told that engine failure was the cause and that they were going to make an emergency landing. at one point the crew called brace for impact and then were silent for 15 minutes the passengers claimed that those 15 minutes felt like 15 hours. fortunately, they landed safely at Alice Springs Airport and continued their journey the next day.

8. Sick in a plane
A United Airlines flight heading to Washington Dulles International Airport was hit by a windstorm in march 2018 whilst preparing to land. The intense turbulence caused by the storm caused mass vomiting throughout the plane and even the pilots were on the verge of throwing up.

Flying the World's Last Passenger Boeing 707

What is it like to fly on a Boeing 707? This video shares my memory of flying on the world's last passenger Boeing 707 flight of Saha Air in Iran.

The Boeing 707 is Boeing's first jet, designed in the 1950s, and is almost 70 years old. It was incredibly loud with 4 JT3D turbofan engines. The Boeing 707 left a long legacy for future aircraft design, especially in the cockpit and the cabin. You can still find many similarities in modern airliners today.

Flying on the original airliner, the B707 was an absolutely thrilling experience. My last B707 flight took me on an adventure from Tehran to Mashad. We took off with the B707s typical shallow climb. The Saha Air B707 has a simple interior with only open racks, instead of overhead bins. A big group of Iraqi religious pilgrims were sitting behind me, they were chanting Muslim prayers during take-off and landing. Saha Air B707 was originally converted from a tanker and then later, after it was retired from passenger service, it went back into service as tanker again. There are large refuelling observation windows onboard. Enjoy the B707 experience!

Thanks to Shahram Sharifi, Alireza Khodakarami, SpeedBird HD and Boeing images for the footage.
