POKPOK ISLAND: Autonomous Region of Bougainville x Papua New Guinea
Bakawari Island, also known as Pokpok, is just off the coast of Bougainville, located near the Kieta Wharf in Central Bougainville.
It is only a 5-minute boat ride from the mainland to the island and most people use canoes to go back and forth.
Pokpok is made up of two large villages which are located back to back.
Facing the mainland is Pokpok village and at her back, facing the vast Solomon Sea is Sisirai. This magical island and its surroundings are just unimaginable. It's a place to snorkel, go diving and also do a little bit of trekking and the best part is water skiing.

The island has just voted by 98% to become an independent nation and I decided this is the right time to drop in and check out this new country. Even though the result must be ratified by the PNG government, I believe this will become the world's newest country thus making it my 114th.

Air Niugini Flight PX250 from Port Moresby, under the command of PNG pilot Captain Vincent Tongia, flies into Buka, Bougainville, on May 13th 2021. The fight takes us over islands in the sun, the northern end of Bougainville Island, beautiful Sohano Island, and the iconic Buka Passage before landing at Buka Airport.
