Antigua Guatemala Travel Guide - Step Into Europe in Central America | 90+ Countries with 3 Kids

Welcome to Antigua Guatemala, a colorful and elegant little town in Central America.

It is a small city that used to be a part of the Spanish colony. Famous for its well-preserved Baroque-influenced architecture, as well as colonial churches ruins, it used to be the capital city. After a hazardous earthquake in 1773, the Spanish crown decided to move it to a new place which is today known as Guatemala city. Some people refused to leave and what was left was renamed into “Antigua Guatemala” meaning Old Guatemala.

Today, it only has around 30 000 inhabitants, but it is a calm and cultural place with the buildings of vivid colors, clean cobblestone streets and breath-taking architecture, very popular for tourists. It is a really cute place which is also under UNESCO’s protection.

Walking around the city, there are views of the imposing Volcán de Agua to the south and the twin peaks of Volcán de Fuego and Acatenango to the west. There are many lined with farm-to-table restaurants, contemporary art galleries, and design studios. The whole town seems so sophisticated, but in such an unusual way, since it is a combination of vivid colors, Spanish culture, rich history, and Guatemalan spirit and surrounding nature.

With its booming coffee scene and boutique hotels, Antigua is quickly garnering appeal as one of the most alluring cities in Central America and we can now see why.

Enjoy the video and let us know where you're watching from!

GUATEMALA | BACKPACKING TRIP 2019 ????????

Guatemala was our first country of our backpacking trip through Central America for four months. We've visited Antigua, hiked up the Acatenango vulcano, visited Lake Atitlan, learned spanish in Xela, went to Semuc Champey, Flores, Tikal and Rio Dulce. Guatemala is one of my favorite countries of Central America, the nature is beautiful!! And the hike to the Acatenango vulcano is still the best thing I've done in these four months. So if you're gonna visit Guatamala, this is a must do! We did it with the company Wicho & Charlies, a big recommendation!

Antigua Guatemala | Central America Travel Vlog | Things to do, weather, food, and more

See why Antigua is one of the must-see places in Central America in our travel vlog. A UNESCO world heritage site, for more than 200 years Antigua served as the seat of the military governor of the Spanish colony of Guatemala- a large region that included almost all of present-day Central America. First, we talk about the glorious weather in Antigua and some of the positioning of the city at an elevation of 5029ft. Then we walk to the very heart of Antigua: Parque Central (Central Park) with the fountain of the sirens at its center. Then we take a short walk to the Santa Catalina Arch, arguably the most famous landmark in all of Antigua if not all of Guatemala. The Santa Catalina Arch is not just a pretty tourist attraction, it was originally built with a very specific purpose. After lunch at the delicious Rincón Típico, we have a sweet treat at the Choco Museo (chocolate museum) while learning a little bit about how chocolate is made. Then it's off to another of Antigua's famous tourist destinations: the Convent of the Capuchinas (Convento Capuchinas). Like much of the historic city, the Convent of the Capuchinas was damaged during an earthquake many years ago, but it is still the perfect place to escape to when you want some peace and quiet. Lastly, we finish our day with some delicious Guatemalan coffee and catch a procession preparing for the famous Semana Santa. Unfortunately, Semana Santa (holy week) was canceled this year so we feel lucky to have seen this.

We filmed this episode of Antigua Guatemala in March 2020.

Lake Atitlán, known for its breathtaking blue-green waters, towering volcanos and the picturesque towns that surround it warrant an extended stay. There's no shortage of experiences in this remarkable area and exploring on the local ferries is idyllic and affordable. If you're looking to discover something special in Guatemala, Lake Atitlán is a destination not to be missed.

Next, we step into the charming world of Antigua, Guatemala. This UNESCO World Heritage site is famed for its well-preserved baroque architecture, cobblestone streets, and vibrant mix of local and global cultures. It stands as a must-visit location for anyone eager to explore the rich tapestry of Guatemala.

This video has been produced to be more than a travel guide or VLOG. It's a showcase of Guatemala's unique offerings, from spending time on a sustainable avocado farm near Antigua to fully embracing Lake Atitlán's serene way of life.

Whether you're a digital nomad seeking a fresh perspective, a laid-back traveler, or someone simply curious about what to do in Guatemala, I hope this exploration will capture your imagination. Join me in uncovering the hidden treasures of this Central American wonder, as we traverse off the beaten path for an authentic and engaging experience.

Solo Traveling GUATEMALA - Antigua to Flores [Trailer]

The Central American country of Guatemala has been on my list for some time, from it's historical cities, volcanos and ancient history. For two and half weeks I visit Guatemala starting in Antigua and ending in Flores. I start my journey exploring the city of Antigua, then head to Xela and challenge myself with a 3 day trek, taking me from Xela to lake Atitlan. I spend a few days glamping and relaxing at Lake Atitlan and from there it’s on to Lanquin, visiting it’s most popular attraction Semuc Champey. I end my travel in Flores and check out the ancient Mayan ruins temples of Tikal. They’ll be lots of adventures, random ups and downs, good times and memories to be had as I go Solo Traveling Guatemala

5 Months in 5 Minutes | BACKPACKING CENTRAL AMERICA

Whilst a little known covid-19 was just beginning to be a problem in China in October 2019, I set off backpacking for an epic 22 week journey through El Salvador, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua & Costa Rica.

Regarding safety I would say 99.9% I felt safe. I hitchhiked through most of Belize and Honduras. Only places I felt slight unease were the big cities in Honduras. That's it!

Budget: $5000.
Including: Envision festival, AOW Scuba dive course + fun dives, 7day Ayahuasca retreat, paragliding, kite surfing, food, accommodation etc.

A fun time indeed. A time before lockdown.

Antigua Guatemala | Hiking Pacaya Volcano | Best things to do | Travel guide | Price guide

Surrounded by 3 active volcanos, the picturesque colonial town of Antigua may be small, but it packs a punch! From hiking Pacaya Volcano, to getting lost in the rabbit warren of Central Market - you will never be short of exciting things to do and see.

The food is delicious, the history is incredible, the people are vibrant, the colonial town is picturesque, and the prices are affordable!

Visiting Semuc Champey Guatemala | Caving (2019) Backpacking Central America

In this episode of our Backpacking Central America Series we arrive at the famous Semuc Champey in Guatemala and a short drive from the town of Lanquin.

Semuc Champey is famous for its blue natural pools, waterfalls and caves. For those feeling brave you can jump from the top of the waterfall or even the main bridge, however this is not suggested during dry season as the water levels are low.

As part of our trip we did the caving - a 1km walk & swim though pitch black caves, holding only a candle. We loved the caving but please be careful not to slip or fall from the ladders or rope climbs.

Semuc Champey means underground river in the Myan language and there is an underground river that flows under the blue natural pools. We loved this day our and would recommend this as a day trip if you are in Guatemala.

Due to the wet day - we were only able to bring our go-pro camera and apologise if some of the audio is a little quiet due to water being in the microphones.

We hope you have as much fun watching this episode at Semuc Champey as we had making it.

Thanks for watching

Travelling from Antigua to Lanquin Guatemala (2019) Hostel El Retiro Lodge

In this episode we travel from the town of Antigua to Lanquin both in Guatemala. Lanquin is a wonderful village tucked in a valley in the jungles of Guatemala and is the base to visit the famous pools of Semuc Champey.

We stayed at El Retiro Lodge which is one of the best stays we have had whilst backpacking Central America. It's right on the river and there is a deep area of the river where you can swim , dive and relax next to the lodge's bar. An absolute idyllic spot. So if you fancy a beautiful spot and a reasonable price then El Retiro lodge is the place for you.
Thanks for watching and coming on this adventure with us as we TREAD the Globe.

Exploring Guatemala City (2019) | Street Food | UK couple Backpacking Central America

In this episode we explore Guatemala City as we continue our adventure backpacking Central America. We visit the area around the Cathedral of Guatemala City.

We explore the Central Market (Mercado Central) , which was wonderful and we try some local street food. Chicken Pepian and Hilachas ( a rich beef stew).

We show you around Hostel Rocia where we were staying and a short walk to the Cathedral.

Guatemala City is very often overlooked by tourists due to it's reputation, however we had a fabulous time there.

Thanks for watching and coming on this adventure with us as we TREAD the Globe.

Antigua Guatemala 2019 - Antigua Guatemala Things to Do

Today we head from Guatemala city to Antigua Guatemala 2019. This is another one of our stops for Central America travel. Join us as we enjoy Antigua Guatemala. Antigua is our second leg after arriving in Guatemala City a couple of days prior. This Guatemala City to Antigua Guatemala trip is a birthday gift and trip for my girlfriend. I knew Antigua Guatemala would be nice, but it was way more than that. I can't tell you how many times we said, Oh my God, I love this city. Guatemala City was nice, but Antigua was incredible. Lots to do, great food and live music to top it off. Visiting Antigua has been my best choice for a trip. Antigua Guatemala City should be at the top of everyone's list. Visiting Guatemala and visiting Antigua Guatemala is a must if choosing a place to visit in Central or South America. There are plenty of things to do in Antigua Guatemala, from nightlife, nature, shopping and short trips to other smaller towns. And of course Lake Atitlan Guatemala. Lake Atitlan should be your second stop when visiting Antigua Guatemala. And Antigua Guatemala nightlife was off the chain; at least in Antigua. Antigua Guatemala 2019 will be a trip that we never forget. This is truly our best trip ever.

You'll be treated to a little action from Fuego volcano. Lot's of action. Guatemala City 2019, again, was great; but Antigua was AWESOME. Visiting Antigua Guatemala, Antigua Guatemala and Lake Atitlan are my top three to do recommendations. Antigua guatemala hotels are mostly basic, but you can find some true gems as well. Such as the hotel we had on our return to the city. Visiting Guatemala City should be your first stop, but then, on to Antigua at only a $22 average Uber ride. Guatemala City to Antigua took us about an hour and there are two sides of one main highway. Each going one direction. Makes for safe travel through the mountains. Travel Guatemala people! Guatemala travel is easy too. For us, we had only one flight from Houston. Travel Guatemala City first since this is where you'll more than likely land in the country. Living in Guatemala is actually something we're looking into. Being an expat is a dream for us down the road. The food in Guatemala was incredible. We voted Guatemala our best food trip. The Guatemalan food was pretty good. I'm not as adventurous as my girlfriend, but I'll try anything once.

Below are links to the products that I recommend. If you choose to purchase any of them, I get a few pennies for it. #CommissionsEarned If I didn't highly recommend something I wouldn't put it on my channel.
