Best Road to Hana Stops - 4K Travel Guide

In this video I'll cover the best Road to Hana stops including - black sand beach, Twin Falls park, Pua'a Ka'a waterfall, Halfway to Hana banana bread and Wailua Valley State Wayside.

Hi, I’m Michael Johnson - travel guide and owner of Film Compass - a travel channel showcasing you the best places to sightsee. Without further ado, here are my top 5 stops on the Road to Hana.

00:00 Intro
00:19 Twin Falls
01:22 Hiking Trails
02:22 Wailua Valley
03:01 Puaa Kaa
03:34 Wainapanapa
04:22 Outro

1. Twin Falls Waterfall - Mile Marker 2 ????

Located at mile marker two, the waterfalls at Twin Falls are the first easily accessible set of waterfalls and pools on the Road to Hana. When you drive by, the parking lot will be a little crowded but don’t let that deter you because people come and go very quickly without taking full advantage of the beauty they’ll see inside this park.

The hike to the large waterfall seen @0:47 is only about a mile over a smooth dirt path surrounded by a lush rainforest. Remember to stick to the paths as the majority of Twin Falls is private property.

A relaxing swim in a large waterfall pool makes Twin Falls one of the best road to Hana stops you can make! Cost for parking is $10 for Non Residents.

2. Hiking Trails (Waikamoi Trail) - Mile Marker 9.5 ????

The Road to Hana is packed with beautiful hiking trails that’ll allow you to stretch your legs as the trails lead you through dense jungle and bamboo forests.

If you didn’t get enough hiking at Twin Falls then I would stop at Waikamoi Nature Trailhead. It’s an easy hike with a picnic area making it the perfect stop for a break on your Maui road trip adventure.

The path is absolutely beautiful as many parts are covered with roots. The trail lies between Twin Falls and the Garden of Eden Arboretum. There’s a little shoulder for you to park on with a sign that says Waikamoi Nature Trailhead.

While there are many Road to Hana hiking trails - this one was one of my favorites and really felt like a hidden gem. After your hike be sure to grab a bite to eat at Halfway to Hana - located at mile marker 17.

3. Wailua Valley State Wayside - Mile Marker 18 ????

A Road to Hana scenic lookout point you won’t want to miss! It’s easy to miss this little turnout at Mile Marker 18 but once you park head up the stairs where you’ll have a gorgeous view of Ke’anae Valley, Ko’olau Gap and Wailua Peninsula. The ocean never looked so blue from up here. This stop doesn’t take long and you can see everything in under 5 minutes or take your time and have a little picnic.

Just after Wailua Valley be sure to keep your eyes open for Upper Waikani Falls at Mile Marker 19. There’s no parking before the falls but there’s a shoulder to park on after you pass the bridge.

4. Pua’a Ka’a Falls - Mile Marker 22 ????

By now you’ve noticed that the Road to Hana has many beautiful waterfalls. They are everywhere but the easiest one to reach is probably Pua’a Ka’a. Residing in the Pua’a Ka’a State Wayside Park - this is one of the rare waterfalls on Hana Highway where public access is welcomed.

There’s parking, restrooms, picnic tables and one of the most beautiful waterfall pools to swim in. Taking a dip isn’t hard but you’ll need to wade over a few rocks to get into the pool so be a little careful and remember to pack some swimming shoes.

If you are taking a Road to Hana tour bus then you’ll be glad to know that this is one of the stops made on your journey to the town of Hana.

5. Waiʻānapanapa State Park (Black Sand Beach) - Mile Marker 32 ????

Waianapanapa’s black sand beach is our last stop and one you’ll need a reservation to get in. The “sparkling water” park is 122 acres of beautiful greenery and has one of Hawaii’s best black sand beaches.

Reservations should be made several days in advance as it can get quite crowded. Snorkeling at Waianapanapa is great but be mindful there are no lifeguards and the current can be strong. Cost for entry is $5 with a $10 parking fee.

That's everything, I hope you enjoyed this list of the best stops on the Road to Hana - stay tuned for more videos and thanks for watching.

Foot Soldier Tunnel at Diamond Head State Monument

Dark tunnels through the mountain... A Hike up Diamond Head State Park with Sharpens Best, the World's Best Knife Sharpener! - See more cool stuff at

The unique profile of Diamond Head (Le'ahi) sits prominently near the eastern edge of Waikiki's coastline. Hawaii's most recognized landmark is known for its historic hiking trail, stunning coastal views, and military history. Diamond Head State Monument encompasses over 475 acres, including the interior and outer slopes of the crater.

This broad, saucer-shaped crater was formed about 300,000 years ago during a single, explosive eruption that sent ash and fine particles in the air. As these materials settled, they cemented together into a rock called tuff, creating the crater, and which is visible from the trail in the park. Most of the vegetation and birds were introduced in the late 1800s to early 1900s.

The trail to the summit of Le'ahi was built in 1908 as part of O'ahu's coastal defense system. The 0.8 mile hike from trailhead to the summit is steep and strenuous, gaining 560 feet as it ascends from the crater floor. The walk is a glimpse into the geological and military history of Diamond Head. A concrete walkway built to reduce erosion shifts to a natural tuff surface about 0.2 mile up the trail with many switchbacks traversing the steep slope of the crater interior. The ascent continues up steep stairs and through a lighted 225-foot tunnel to enter the Fire Control Station completed in 1911. Built on the summit, the station directed artillery fire from batteries in Waikiki and Fort Ruger outside Diamond Head crater. At the summit, you'll see bunkers and a huge navigational lighthouse built in 1917. The postcard view of the shoreline from Koko Head to Wai'anae is stunning, and during winter, may include passing humpback whales.

Pokai Bay Video 1

A look at Pokai Bay, Oahu

Keanae Lookout - Maui, Hawaii ???????? | 4K drone footage

Keanae Peninsula is a low-lying finger peninsula that juts out from Hana Highway. It might not look like much at first glance, but this small stretch of land offers fantastic taro farming for locals while visitors can enjoy some exceptional ocean vistas.
- The HawaiianIslands.com Local Expert Team

When we are young, a lot of enjoyment comes from running about; going this way and that way and enjoying all the big thrills that come our way. But as we grow, we start to appreciate the calmer things in life; we enjoy sitting and soaking in the surrounding beauty. For those in this place in their life, Keanae Peninsula is quite the destination.

Keanae Peninsula is a little strip of land that juts out from the Road to Hana and is home to a small Hawaiian village. This finger peninsula is located just off of Hana Highway, so much so that you can choose to peek out for a quick view from your car as you amble along your drive towards Hana. But why not stop, linger, and enjoy the beauty if you have a moment?

This peninsula is not very large. It stretches out just a half-mile from that main throughway. There is only one road that cuts off of Hana Highway and goes around the entire outside edge of Keanae Peninsula. That road is called Keanae Road and you will find it around mile marker number 16, or just after the signs for Keanae Arboretum if you are traveling west to east.

It is said that this peninsula is newly formed, the result of intense lava flow not too far back in the island’s history. However, the soil here is very rich and most of the inland area is used to grow taro. The story behind such fertile soil is that ancient Hawaiians trucked down the dirt basket-by-basket until they had a nice flat area atop which to plant their fields. Such a story isn’t hard to believe once you see the bounty that comes out every harvest here!

But naturally, most people don’t come here to stare at the fields. Shortly after turning onto Keanae Road, you will find yourself passing a small rocky beach. Go around the turn for a little parking area for this lookout spot and beach. This is a tiny stretch of land known locally as Waialohe Park, although park amenities are few.

Continue along the road and you will find yourself passing the beloved Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread and then two other lookout points, a parking area, and a public restroom. This is where we really recommend pausing and getting out of the vehicle. These lookout areas make up the furthest points of Keanae Penninsula and offer spectacular shoreline vistas complete with waves crashing upon the rocks and the nice blend of verdant grassy greens, grays, and blacks of hardened lava rocks, and the meshing of ocean blues and foamy white waves.

With such beauty also comes tragedy. The low shoreline of the Kaenae Peninsula has historically made it very susceptible to bad weather. The worst of such natural disasters to happen here did so in 1946 when a devastating, unpredicted tsunami crashed over the island. Tragically, the villages’ school bore the brunt of the impact, and twenty children and four teachers lost their lives to the thirty-five-foot waves. The only structure to fully remain from that tsunami was a stone church building that you can still see today as you drive down Kaenae Road. This church was built in 1856 and has withstood quite the test of time and weather.

Note, this part of Maui’s shoreline is also exceptionally dangerous for swimming. The sharp rocks underneath combined with chaotic waves and quick undertows simply make swimming here both unenjoyable and unsafe. There are no lifeguards posted here or even near this area. Even the most experienced swimmers should not wade in.

Insider Tips:
Do not skip a stop at Aunty Sandy’s Banana Bread. For many locals, a fresh loaf or slice of bread from this roadside stand is the primary reason for coming out as far as Keanae Peninsula. In addition to their titular banana bread, they also typically have shaved ice, chili dogs, pork sandwiches, and in-season produce for sale.
