ANA A380 Flying Honu Inaugural Flight Tokyo Honolulu
ANA All Nippon Airways have started flying their Airbus A380 Flying Honu between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu on 24 May 2019. I was among the first passengers to fly on the inaugural flight. There were lot of good celebrations at the boarding gate and on-board.
This is a detail trip report of the first ANA A380 “Flying Honu” themed flight in Business Class. Throughout the video, I also looked into other unique features on this ANA flight including ANA Couchii, economy class and premium economy. In next video, I will review ANA A380 First Class from Honolulu to Tokyo.

On 24th May 2019, following on from my video exploring the delivery of All Nippon Airway’s first, brand new Airbus A380 Flying Honu aeroplane, decorated in a spectacular, lively and bright blue sea turtle themed livery, I took the A380 Flying Honu’s first ever, inaugural flight from Narita International Airport, close to Tokyo, Japan in the Chiba district to Honolulu, Hawaii in the United States in ANA business class.
It was a very enjoyable flight and experience and even before I boarded, I had the honour of witnessing the ceremony to mark the inaugural flight of the Flying Honu with music, dancing and a set of very cute, life-sized plush turtles, each one representing one of the blue, green and orange ANA Flying Honu liveries – look out for these guys later in the video, as they feature in what has to be the world’s cutest pre-flight safety video you’ve ever seen!
Before flying, I meet the designer of the blue, sea turtle aeroplane livery and I also meet Yuji Hirako, the CEO and president of ANA, who gives out free gifts to myself and all the passengers, including a special fold up bag and fun, souvenir Honu ANA Hawaii t-shirts!
On board, I have the opportunity to examine the on-board facilities and service. The aeroplane is very geared towards looking after families with young children. Its Couchii section in economy class provides an area for young families where children can lounge and lie across multiple seats – groups of four seats have cushions which, when lifted up, form one long seat to lounge back on as if you were in business class! It’s great for young children to be able to take a nap when they need it and it promotes a more relaxed atmosphere for young families, with children who may find it hard to be restricted to a single seat for the whole flight, especially on a long haul flight from Japan to the United States like this one.
The child friendly facilities don’t end there – I take the chance to assess the nappy changing room on board, which has been designed with baby’s needs in mind from start to finish, and I also look at the dedicated baby food and even baby cutlery provided on board – All Nippon Airways new flying Honu is definitely an aeroplane that you can trust to get you and your children from A to B in comfort and in an environment which is a home from home.
The inaugural flight of the flying Honu is the perfect time for me to check out the on-board catering. I go for the Japanese option which consists of a large number of smaller items including beef, fish, other seafood, rice and fruit – the appetiser, the starter (soup), the main meal and the dessert are all served together on one tray so that you can eat it at your leisure – the service was a little slow, but I’m sure this will improve in time; the quality of the food, however, was excellent.
I have a lie down after my meal – the sleeping arrangements in business class consist of a long bed with plenty of room; just watch that you don’t get your feet stuck!
Throughout the video, I have the chance to discuss this special, maiden flight of the ANA Flying Honu with fellow aviation enthusiasts and people who people who live and breathe the Airbus A380. After spending an unforgettable week in Japan back in May, part of the journey back to Canada involved a bit of a detour to Hawaii to fly on ANA's Airbus A380!
The famous Flying Honu flies exclusively between Tokyo and Honolulu, and so this made for a great opportunity to fly on one of the rarest A380s in the world!

The Most UNIQUE Airbus A380 - ANA NEW A380 Business Class from Honolulu to Tokyo
I flew from Honolulu to Tokyo Narita with ANA(All Nippon Airways /NH) to try out the World’s Most Unique A380 ‘Flying Honu’. ANA has just three Airbus A380s. All three A380s are exclusively offered to the popular leisure route between Tokyo and Honolulu. It’s very unusual for an airline to have their A380s only operating on one route.
ANA’s three A380s were painted in a special livery depicting sea turtles which are native to Hawaii. In the Hawaiian dialect, the Sea Turtle is called “Honu” and hence ANA selected the name “Flying Honu” for this special livery.
ANA’s Honolulu lounge has very ingenious design. Because you can board here from the lounge to the upper deck of the A380 directly. There are three jet bridges, two connect the terminal gate area to the lower deck of the A380, while the third jet bridge connects the lounge to the upper deck directly. So passengers can relax and enjoy every moment in the lounge.
ANA is also adding more 'Aloha' on its Honolulu route specific experience with the IFE’s turtle illustration, menu’s orchid flowers, Hawaiian boarding music, and etc. I really enjoyed ‘the Aloha atmosphere’ from the lounge to the flight. It was a very good experience with the world’s most unique A380! :) Thanks to ANA for the hospitality and great service. Hope I can fly with this giant turtle again in the near future.

Following on from our exciting video celebrating the delivery of All Nippon Airways’ first new A380, the flying Honu, (which you can catch here: we examine the interior of this new, very large and fun aeroplane, painted to symbolise the sky in a lively blue colour with a cute painted design making the exterior of the plane represent a sea turtle.
In this video, the interior of All Nippon Airways’ new Airbus A380, the flying Honu, which is currently based at Narita International Airport in Tokyo, is revealed and we look at what each of the classes has to offer individuals, families with young children and people on business.
We are given the honour of being the very first to be seated in All Nippon Airways’ new economy class aboard the A380. The economy seats have good leg room, with the seats having a 34 inch pitch, and a full length foot rest for both feet. The entertainment screens built in to the back of each economy seat provide more than enough to keep you occupied with a vast array of films, music and TV on offer in several languages. Unusually for economy class, there are also free soft drinks provided for economy passengers on board ANA’s new A380 through a self-service bar which we think is a very nice touch.
At the rear of economy class, which occupies the lower deck of the plane, we find the ANA Couchii class which contains rows of economy seats in sets of four, which have cushions which are able to rise and form one long bed-like seat spread across the four seats. We discuss the origins of, and the ideas behind, this new ANA Couchii class through an exclusive discussion with the manager of cabin configuration at All Nippon Airways. He explains that the Couchii class is aimed at families with young children, who may well be going to Hawaii for a well earned break, who wish to relax and spend quality family time together – the Couchii class allows children to lay down and rest on the long flight, rather than being confined to their seats. The Couchii class is designed to provide some of the comfort of business class for families with young children, without the inherent segregation of business class which is not ideal for aiding the interaction of young children with their parents.
The interior decoration of economy class, with sky blue and clouds painted on the walls, helps families and children to relax and is reflective of the bright and fun blue livery on the exterior of this flying Honu A380 aeroplane. We really got the sense that All Nippon Airways have made great efforts to make their new economy class aboard the A380 very child friendly.
After our thorough examination of All Nippon Airways economy class aboard their new Airbus A380, we move on to look at the premium economy, business and first class sections which occupy the upper deck of the plane.
Premium economy offers an extended 38 inch seat pitch with the ability to recline your seat further. There are also additional storage bins for ANA premium economy customers. There are 73 premium economy seats altogether.
Business class is composed of 56 individually segregated seats with the ability to convert in to a single bed with an entertainment screen at the end of each unit.
We also take a look at the exclusive first class section of the new Flying Honu A380 which contains eight private suites. Like business class, first class comes with complimentary bed clothes but also comes with a complimentary toiletry set. A special, bright blue cocktail is available to be served to business class and first class customers, again symbolic of the bright blue outer livery of the plane.

ANA First A380 FLYING HONU Delivered!
ANA took delivery of the first A380 in a stunning livery called Flying Honu.
I was invited to the delivery ceremony. It was such a momentous day to see the most special A380 livery called Flying Honu (Turtle) flying in the sky!
Watch the video to enjoy the special delivery ceremony and all the on-board products from First Class, Business Class, Premium Economy and Economy class which also feature a unique ANA COUCHii seating.
ANA will reveal the real interior of their A380 in a later date in Tokyo.
The ANA A380 will be operating exclusively on Tokyo Narita to Honolulu route with special menu, amenities on-board as explained and shown in the video.

In this video, we celebrate and examine the delivery of All Nippon Airways’ first ordered A380 and what makes the set of three A380’s ordered by Japan’s largest airline, also known as Zennikkū, extra special.
Each of the three Airbus A380’s ordered by ANA will be painted in a striking, bright and fun livery with eyes and a nose and mouth painted on to the front of the plane, ultimately depicting sea turtles native to Hawaii.
The first delivered plane’s blue livery is dubbed “Flying Honu” and symbolises the sky. The other themes will be the ocean and sunset, focusing on the colours turquoise/green and orange respectively – the green liveried plane is expected to emerge from the factory in Hamburg on 25th March 2019. The liveries are some of the most elaborate ever attempted by Airbus – the first blue plane alone has taken 21 days to paint, making use of 16 unique shades of colour.
Flying Honu is scheduled to fly from Japan to Hawaii in the United States three times a week from late May 2019, departing from Narita international airport in Tokyo and arriving at Honolulu international airport.
During the delivery ceremony of the first A380 to ANA, Yutaka Ito, the executive vice president of ANA, remarked that the introduction of the Airbus A380 in to their arsenal was “something that the entire team at ANA is very excited about.” And with very good reason.
The new aeroplanes will feature four different cabins spread out over a staggering 520 seats between the upper and lower decks, catering for first, business, premium economy and economy classes as well as a fifth unique class introduced by ANA – “COUCHii,” which will feature seats with extendable leg rests that convert in to a bed.
First class passengers will be treated to massive 32 inch televisions and modernised, secluded suites with sliding doors and on-board novelties will include an All Nippon Airways exclusive bright blue Hawaii cocktail and a menu for economy class designed by Australian chef Bill Granger. There are even plans to build a dedicated A380 lounge at Honolulu international airport, providing separate entrances for premium passengers that connect straight to the exclusive upper deck of the aircraft.
With so much space and luxury, and the solid and reliable power of the Rolls Royce Trent 900 engines behind them, these new A380’s are likely to be the new jewels in the crown for Air Nippon Airways.

Today we get the absolute privilage of flying on All Nippon Airways for the first time, made even more special because it is on their only A380 route. They do have a couple aircraft, but they only fly between Tokyo Narita and Honolulu. Unfortunately our first class upgrade wasn't possible, but the Business Class flight was still wonderful!

ANA B777 First Class Tokyo to London + New Pokémon Eevee Jet
I was invited to the Pokemon Eevee Jet unveil event in Tokyo with a newly painted ANA B777-300/ER featuring Pokemon character Pikachu and Eevee. I was supposedly to fly from Tokyo to London in ANA First Class “The Suite” on the Eevee Jet the next day…
ANA flight from Tokyo Haneda to London use the new Terminal 2 International facility. I visited the new ANA Suite Lounge, it was quiet and spacious but I found it lacked privacy. At the gate, there was some disappointing news, the new Eevee Jet went tech and was substituted by a B777 in ANA regular livery. Nevertheless, passengers still received the Pokemon souvenir during boarding.
The ANA First Class Suite was impressively wide and came with all the usual First Class amenities such as comfort kit, pajamas and even a cardigan on loan to passengers. Flight time to London was over 14 hours with unusual routing flying North via the Bering Sea, Alaska, Arctic Circle, and Greenland. This is to bypass the Russian airspace due to current restrictions.
After takeoff, I went to check out ANA Economy and Premium Economy product offerings. The Japanese airline offers better meals and legroom in Economy. Back to First Class, I enjoyed a five-course dining and went behind the scenes on how the crew prepares Japanese Washoku meal onboard. 日本では初となる個室タイプのファーストクラスやエコノミークラスでベッドの様に使用することができるANAカウチの導入などANA ハワイ観光強化を図っています。
今回はANAマイルでのアップグレードで奇跡的にファーストクラスに搭乗することが出来ました。ラウンジから機内まで全てが感じたことのない空間で一生記憶に残るであろうフライトになりました。

The BEST FLIGHT EVER! 14 Hours in ANA New First Class The Suite - The best way to travel to JAPAN
The Ultimate Intercontinental Flight! 14 hours of luxury and incredible Japanese hospitality. This is my amazing experience flying ANA's The Suite First Class - it was truly an unforgettable journey. From the moment I boarded, I was in heaven!
The Suite itself was the epitome of luxury. It might not be the biggest first class but the spacious seat reclined into a comfortable bed, and the privacy screen gave me the perfect amount of seclusion but then again i was only 1 of 2 people in the cabin! Plus, the soft mood lighting and sleek design elements made me feel like I was in a modern high-end hotel room and restaurant.
And the food - oh my god! It was some of the best food I've ever had AND it was on a plane. The multi-course meal was beautifully presented and tasted absolutely delicious. And don't even get me started on the whiskey and champagne.
But what really set this flight apart was the exceptional service. The flight attendants went above and beyond to make sure my experience was perfect - from customizing my meal to making me a separate bed to presenting me with a little certificate, they truly thought of everything.
Overall, flying ANA's The Suite First Class was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I will never forget. If you're looking to treat yourself to the ultimate luxury travel experience, I highly recommend giving it a try. Trust me, it's worth every cent and mile!

All Nippon Airways A380 Flying Honu Narita - Honolulu, Hawaii in Business Class
**This video was shot before the deadly coronavirus became a global pandemic. I sincerely wish everyone stays safe and healthy. Hopefully we may be able to travel again sooner than later.**
Let’s join me for this trip report on-board ANA’s Airbus A380 in Business Class to Honolulu, USA from Narita, Japan (NH184). The plane we will be traveling on is a nearly brand new Airbus A380 (JA382A), or the second of 3 so-called Flying Honu in the ANA fleet.
In terms of services, I think it was top-notch on this flight or most other ANA flights in general. They were attentive, polite and quick to react to your requests. Overall the flight was very comfy, and if anything all it; it was the limited entertainment choices on-board that drags down the overall experience. In all, I would definitely recommend ANA and all things considered, I give this flight a 4.5 out of 5 stars.
