On our way to Giethoorn, The Netherlands - DJI Mini 2 and GoPro Hero 9

Giethoorn is a water region village in the head of Overijssel, in the municipality of Steenwijkerland in the Dutch province of Overijssel and lies between Steenwijk and Meppel.

Giethoorn was a settlement of peat cultivators. The exploitation started from the east bank of the Giethoornsche Meer and consisted of gorges facing east that were separated by waterways, such as the Cornelisgracht and the Walengracht .

Because of the peat arose ponds and lakes. Canals and ditches were dug to transport the peat. Many houses are built on islands, as it were, which can only be reached via bridges. Most of the more than 176 bridges are private property.

The only through land connection through the old village is a bicycle-cum-walking path that runs from Noordeinde to Zuideinde and is only interrupted by Kerkweg between Noordeinde and Middenbuurt. The main traffic takes place over the water. The main traditional craft used for this was the punt, propelled by a punt boom (punting). Nowadays all kinds of motor-powered boats are used for this and there is hardly any punting anymore.

Trip to Amsterdam - May 2017

Just a short video made with Google Photos about my recent trip to Amsterdam.

The Venice of the North - Giethoorn, The Netherlands

For best viewing, watch this slide show in the full screen mode on your monitor or stream to your TV.

Giethoorn's history goes back to around 1200 when Franciscan monks settled in the area. In the marsh lands peat was formed and when the settlers started to use the peat, canals were dug for transport. Big areas became lakes, many of them not deeper than three, four feet.

This idyllic town has, essentially, no roads or cars. The only access to the area's quaint houses and public buildings is by using its beautiful canals or walking across over some 176 wooden arch bridges. The population is about 2,600, with island homes backing straight onto the water highways - perfect for ice skating in winter when the water freezes over.

It sounds and looks like an awesome place to at least vacation, and maybe even to move. It’s now on my, “bucket list.”

Holland Stories | Nederland Waterland - Giethoorn

Giethoorn, Netherlands

The Venice of the North

Giethoorn is so peaceful, so different and has such simple beauty that it hardly seems real – gently gliding along small canals past old but pretty thatched-roof farmhouses.

You can turn down a “side street” (another small canal) and drift under a wooden bridge where an elderly resident may be strolling over to see a neighbor. No this is not Venice or Armsterdam.

It is too quiet, too serene and remote. It is so calm that its nickname of the “Dutch Venice” may give a false impression of size and crowds and commercialism.

Here in Holland’s water village of Giethoorn the loudest sound you can normally hear is the quacking of a duck or the noise made by other birds. Giethoorn is in the province of Overijssel in the east of the Netherlands, a green and still area.

Day trip from Amsterdam : Giethoorn - The No Roads, No Cars Village in the Netherlands

Giethoorn - often referred to as Little Venice or Venice of the North is a quiet little village, located in the North East of the Netherlands.

It is so peaceful and so tranquil, that you will truly romanticize the nature. The loudest noise you can hear here is the chirping of the birds or the quacking of the ducks. For anyone who dreams of a simple village life with beautiful nature around, Giethoorn will be a heaven.

Amsterdam 2017, Niederlande, HD 1080p50

Giethoorn, The Dutch Venice. A 12 minutes insight for the NO-CAR city

A day In Giethoorn is a well spent day. The Venice of the North or as also called The Dutch venice is a canal based village in the north of Netherlands.
To go to Giethoorn from amsterdam you have to take a train then a bus. (that is around 2 hours) but the views will make the time pass faster.
You better go early morning, where it is quieter than midday. The best part of the day will be hiring a boat which YOU RIDE YOUSELF through the beautiful canals and awsome houses along the canals. Too much green color and flowers. If you don't want to ride a boat yourself you can still take the big boats with a driver and sound guides.
There are around 170 beautiful wooden bridges built on the canals to help one get from one side to the other. There also a small mennonite church that is opened to visiting.
Museum Giethoorn ‘t Olde Maat Uus is a farm museum illustrating the region’s history, and giving you an idea of how life was 100 years ago, what tools they had and what utensils they used in the daily life farm work. I found it very interesting.
This is a short video only 12 minutes, There is a 47 minutes version which is more detailed and soon there will be a 2 hours version which is the fullest.
On your way Back to Amsterdam, stopping by Zwolle for an hour or two may be a good idea.
