Beautiful Kyoto: Being a Maiko (featuring Fukunae-san)

Though a lot of what goes on in Kyoto's geisha districts takes place in private teahouses and behind gilded screens, it's no secret that maiko (geisha apprentices) lead strict and challenging lifestyles in the pursuit of their art.

Last year the Kyoto Fan (Discover Kyoto) team had the privilege of interviewing one of Miyagawa-chō's hard working maiko, Fukunae-san, to see what kind of training and preparation she goes through in order to one day become a top class geisha (or geiko, as they are called in Kyoto). Follow along as Fukunae-san takes us through an average day in her life, including music study, hair and make-up, dressing, and entertaining in the evenings. We hope you too will one day have a chance to experience this amazing Kyoto tradition.

Real Geisha Real Women (2009)–Documentary–Complete Film, English Subtitles

Real Geisha Real Women is a documentary by Peter MacIntosh about the lives of several women in Kyoto, Japan of various generations who are, or have been, maiko and geiko (the Kyoto terms for geisha).

Their stories are told in their own words as a series of vignettes without the use of a narrator. Rare footage of their journeys outside of Kyoto includes a hometown visit, a trip to Tokyo, as well as travels abroad.

Peter Macintosh has lived in Kyoto, Japan, among the geisha community for over three decades. He has worked as a liaison and coordinator on geisha-related documentaries, including productions for BBC, BNN, Swiss Television, National Geographic, A&E, and many more. He also worked with the location scouting team for Hollywood's Memoirs of a Geisha.

The Life of a Modern Japanese Geisha

The geisha are alive and well in Japan – though foreigners rarely catch even a glimpse of them. Meet Kobai-san, a 63-year-old geisha, and discover the truth about the mysterious Willow World...

• Why do young girls become geisha nowadays?
• How do you hire a geisha?
• How can you tell a geisha from a maiko (apprentice geisha)?

A few things you probably didn’t know about the geisha
• They are NOT prostitutes. They are hired for their artistic skills and considerable social graces.
• Geisha live in communities of women and are entirely independent of men (though they may have boyfriends).
• Geisha can be in their 70s – they often earn more as they get older.
• Apprentice geisha are far more elaborately dressed than fully-fledged geisha.

Differences between a Geiko (Geisha) and a Maiko (with subtitles) 【HD】

In this video Geiko Miehina and Maiko Fukunae, both from the Miyagawa ward of Kyoto, explain to us the differences between a Geiko (Geisha) and a Maiko (apprentice), at the Kyoto Fan Event Maiko Spring 2012, at KYOTO DESIGN HOUSE.

Hair, make up, Kimono and accessories are the topics covered on their explanation.

Knowing these details can also help you to tell the difference between tourists dressed in Geisha costume and the real Geiko/Maiko walking on the streets of Kyoto.

Maiko Experience Kyoto:
!! - O P E N M E F O R I N F O / F A Q / M U S I C - !!
Alexis and I got to visit the Maiko Makeup Experience in Kyoto, Japan. We were able to put on traditional Japanese Maiko Makeup, wear kimonos, learn about Maiko (because I had no idea what that was before this) and take some lovely pictures. A bit nervous because we weren't sure how the makeup look would turn out on us, but we really actually enjoyed it and I encourage men and women who are going to Kyoto to try it!! #MaikoExperience

Oiran Full Makeover and Photoshoot in Tokyo

** Please note I incorrectly referred to an Oiran as a Geisha in my video and realized this after my recording. Geishas and Oirans dress differently and also have distinct roles. ;)

Oiran Makeover in Kyoto!

Hello, Muggles!

Finally, my photo book came in the mail so I could finish this video!
The purpose of visiting Kyoto was to try one of the Oiran plans at Studio Esperanto.

The make-up artists and stylists were so quick and amazing, they let me film their process as long as I didn't catch any customers in the frames, so I had to edit a little here and there.
The theme of my shoot was Sakurahime which was a season special, their special shoots change seasonally.
My senpai @ningyosekai is also in the video and took a regular Oiran plan.
Find me on Instagram @capsulebunny to see more pictures from this shoot!

Thanks for watching as as always, please subscribe!

Insider's Guide to... Maiko

Brett and Richard are back together with a brand new Insider's Guide on meeting a Maiko or trainee Geisha.

Behind the scenes and the MAKING of MAIKO MAKEOVER

We had to blurred some part of the video with our friend because of her privacy. But we hope you will still enjoy watching ????

Maiko -Kyoto-

Maiko is an apprentice geiko. Their jobs consist of performing songs, dances, and playing the shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument) for visitors at a feast. Maiko are usually aged 15 to 20 years old and become geiko after learning how to dance (a kind of Japanese traditional dance), play the shamisen, and learning Kyō-kotoba (dialect of Kyoto), regardless of their origins.
Maiko are considered one of the great sights of Japanese tourism, and look very different from fully qualified Geisha. They are at the peak of traditional Japanese femininity. The scarlet-fringed collar of a maiko's kimono hangs very loosely in the back to accentuate the nape of the neck, which is considered a primary erotic area in Japanese sexuality. She wears the same white makeup for her face on her nape, leaving two or sometimes three stripes of bare skin exposed. Her kimono is bright and colorful with an elaborately tied obi hanging down to her ankles. She takes very small steps and wears traditional wooden shoes called okobo which stand nearly ten centimeters high. There are 5 different hairstyles that a maiko wears, that mark the different stages of her apprenticeship. The Nihongami hairstyle with kanzashi hair-ornamentation strips is most closely associated with maiko, who spend hours each week at the hairdresser and sleep on holed-pillows to preserve the elaborate styling. Maiko can develop a bald spot on their crown caused by rubbing from Kanzashi strips and tugging in hairdressing.

Cultural Experiences in Japan | Geisha and maiko performances | PK xpedtion

Watching a geisha or maiko (apprentice geisha) perform in a teahouse is one of the most unique and exclusive experiences in Japan. Geisha and maiko usually perform in ochaya (teahouses), ryokan (traditional inns) or high-end restaurants in areas like Tokyo, Kyoto and Kanazawa. These performers have been strictly trained in Japanese traditional arts, including song and dance and musical instruments like the koto (a board zither) and the shamisen (a three-stringed instrument resembling a guitar). Performances can usually be seen during the daytime accompanied by a Japanese tea ceremony, or in the evening with a Japanese banquet.

WE SAW A GEISHA IRL

Hey lovelies!

In this vlog, we travel to my favourite Japanese city, Kyoto!

We explored and ate our hearts out at the famous Nishiki Market, followed by taking a stroll through the Gion district! We even saw some geishas, which is a pretty rare sight! Still can't believe it till this day! And my God, I want her smooth skin!

In the second half of the vlog, it is all about hiking! The first hike of the day was up the hill toward the Kiyomizu-dera Temple! Unfortunately, the great hall is still under renovations so there aren't many vlogs at that location! :(

Stay tune next week for our hike up Inari mountain and Arashiyama Bamboo Forest!

As always, thanks for watching!

The dying culture of north Japan

This is part two in a three part interview series on the Sakata Maiko. Part one is here:

Memoirs of a REAL Geiko | PART ONE | How to become a Maiko

Sakata City in Yamagata, North Japan, is home to a vibrant Maiko (trainee Geisha) and Geiko culture that currently owes its existence to Kosuzu Neesan, the energetic Geiko performer and Maiko trainer of Somaro Maiko Teahouse and Hina Doll Gallery.

In the last video, Kosuzu-neesan introduced us to the culture of the Sakata Maiko, but in this video she tells us how she is going about keeping the culture alive.

Then, in the final video I ask Kosuzu Neesan about the challenges she has had to overcome, and what she is most proud of:
