Mauritania Drone Flight: Mauritania, officially the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, is a country in Northwest Africa. It is the eleventh largest sovereign state in Africa and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the west, Western Sahara to the north and northwest, Algeria to the northeast, Mali to the east and southeast, and Senegal to the southwest. The country derives its name from the ancient Berber kingdom of Mauretania, which existed from the 3rd century BCE into the 7th century CE in the far north of modern-day Morocco and Algeria. Approximately 90% of Mauritanias land is within the Sahara; consequently, the population is concentrated in the south, where precipitation is slightly higher. The capital and largest city is Nouakchott, located on the Atlantic coast, which is home to around one-third of the countrys 4.3 million people. The government was overthrown on 6 August 2008, in a military coup détat led by General Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz. On 16 April 2009, Aziz resigned from the military to run for president in the 19 July elections, which he won. [wikipedia // Google]

Mali Travel Overland in a Land Rover Defender (Djenne & Bamako)

We are continuing our Overland Africa journey as we drive our land rover Defender TDI from the UK to South Africa. We have survived nearly falling off the sand dunes into the sea in Mauritania and now from the remote city of Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania, on the western side of Africa we have to cross Mauritania to get into Mali, and from Mali onwards across the Sahara to Niger.

Now in the 1970s a road was built right across Mauritania from the coast all the way inland, linking up west Africa to east Africa with a road right across the southern Sahara desert and it was joyfully dubbed the Road of Hope. Now this was 2000 so we'd read about the road of hope so we thought this is our route, there really is only one route across the centre of Mauritania to get to Mali.

It was quite an amazing change as you go south because like Mauritania before a lot of Mali is also in the Sahara desert but also there's the big rivers that come up from the south of Mali, and as you come from the desert the barren desolate emptiness of the Sahara desert into lush green trees and it's so amazing to see the vibrancy of life that suddenly appears.

Mali is famous for the Monday market in Djenné, a market which is completely assembled and dismantled every week in front of the famous Djenné mosque by the locals who come in from all directions so that they can trade their goods with each other.

We dropped south down into Bamako, the capital of Mali, a big busy African city, and after getting our visas for Niger headed on to an amazing overnight experience involving the best chicken and chips meal ever and a sensational football match at a border town before crossing the border into Niger.

Land Rover Africa Overland
--------------------------------------------
Twenty years ago my wife and I packed up our life in the UK and set off to drive overland in our Land Rover Defender with the aim of driving all the way to the Cape Town in South Africa, a journey which will take us from coast to coast along the length and breadth of Africa.

Because this journey was twenty years ago, there were no smartphones, no google maps, and no digital cameras. The photos taken on the journey were on transparencies, designed to be projected. I have taken photographs of some of those slides for the purpose of showing in this video.

Previously in the Africa Overland Series:
Africa Overland Part 4: Mauritanian Minefields and Beach Drive
Having made it to Mauritania we face our biggest challenge yet as we dig & drive through a Mauritanian minefield, follow the railroad to the beach road and nearly lose the land rover to the Atlantic Ocean.

OUR FUTURE GREECE

Welcome to OUR FUTURE Western Thessaly, Greece!
For Our Future Greece, we broadcast worldwide from our virtual dialogue at the footsteps of the mystical UNESCO World Heritage site of Meteora.
During Our Future, we will gain insights into the overall Greek context for tourism, as well as the complex matters facing the locals when tourism returns to the region. Each of the communities near Meteora (e.g., Trikala, Kalampaka, Kastraki Village) face intriguing, individual challenges and feature varying degrees of progressive smart- and sustainable-strategies. And yet, they bonded by shared challenges such as the effects of rural to urban migration, the tension between established destinations and rural development (e.g., some sites get more than one million visitors per year, while just a few kilometers away, a site may not get a single visitor all year), a lack of innovation as the aging population cannot follow the technology and digitalization of the sector, and so much more.

MIami Beach, Florida - Miami Beach Botanical Garden (2019)

The Miami Beach Botanical Garden is a 2.6-acre urban greenspace in Miami Beach, Florida founded in 1962. It was transformed in 2011 with a $1.2 million landscape renovation designed by South Florida landscape architect Raymond Jungles. The new landscape showcases native Florida plants and trees including bromeliads, palms, cycad, orchids and many others. There is a Japanese garden, native garden and bio-swale, and water gardens including ponds, fountains, and a wetland with mangrove and pond apple trees. The renovation also expanded the Great Lawn area for corporate and social events, established a plant nursery and event plaza, and enhanced the night-time lights, entrance gate, and pathways.

The Garden offers free admission and is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Miami Beach is a coastal resort city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It was incorporated on March 26, 1915. The municipality is located on natural and man-made barrier islands between the Atlantic Ocean and Biscayne Bay, the latter of which separates the Beach from Miami. The neighborhood of South Beach, comprising the southernmost 2.5 square miles (6.5 km2) of Miami Beach, along with downtown Miami and the Port of Miami, collectively form the commercial center of South Florida. Miami Beach's estimated population is 92,307 according to the most recent United States census estimates. Miami Beach is the 26th largest city in Florida based on official 2017 estimates from the US Census Bureau. It has been one of America's pre-eminent beach resorts since the early 20th century.

In 1979, Miami Beach's Art Deco Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Art Deco District is the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world and comprises hundreds of hotels, apartments and other structures erected between 1923 and 1943. Mediterranean, Streamline Moderne and Art Deco are all represented in the District. The Historic District is bounded by the Atlantic Ocean on the East, Lenox Court on the West, 6th Street on the South and Dade Boulevard along the Collins Canal to the North. The movement to preserve the Art Deco District's architectural heritage was led by former interior designer Barbara Baer Capitman, who now has a street in the District named in her honor.

I visited Ithala Game Reserve in KZN, South Africa in November 2018. This relatively unknown reserve is definitely worth a visit. Not only for its abundant wildlife, but also for the spectacular scenery. Take a look and decide for yourself.

Scottish Spring Roadtrip - Hills, Whisky and Beaches

A short video of our recent trip to Buckie, Moray, Scotland in March. We drank whisky, walked along the beach and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

This has become somewhat of an annual pilgrimage and (surprisingly for Scotland) we've always been blessed with brilliant weather. This made for perfect filming conditions - particularly drone shots of the scenery over the sea and waves.

Hope you enjoy!

Early Winter Road Trip Drive With Music On History Visit To Aberfeldy Highlands Perthshire Scotland

Tour Scotland 4K early Winter travel video, with Scottish fiddle music, of a cold road trip drive with some snow North on the A826 road to Aberfeldy on ancestry, genealogy, family history visit before Christmas to the Highlands of Perthshire, Britain, United Kingdom. By the meteorological calendar, the first day of Winter is always 1st December in Scotland; ending on 28th of February. The A826 is a very barren road. It only goes through one town, and that is at one end in Aberfeldy. The road is twisty and bendy. On the way, you see Grandtully Hill, the small Loch na Creige and Glen Cochill. It is also a tourist route, being part of the Perthshire Tourist Route. In fact, it is all in the historic country of Perthshire. The A826 originated in the late 1720s as part of General Wade's Crieff to Inverness military road. This route started as the A822 in Crieff, followed the A826 into Aberfeldy. Beyond its association with Robert Burns, who mentioned Aberfeldy in his poem The Birks of Aberfeldy, . Aberfeldy is also mentioned in the traditional Loch Tay Boat Song. Aberfeldie, the suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia was named, indirectly, after the town, as was the locality of Aberfeldy, Victoria. Of interest to folks with ancestry, genealogy or Scottish Family Roots in Scotland who may wish to visit one day. Find things to see and do in Scotland where you are always welcome. When driving on Scottish roads in Scotland slow down and enjoy the trip.
